Hundreds Run Boston Marathon’s Last Mile

boston-last-mile(AP) — Hundreds of runners are joining victims of the Boston Marathon bombings to finish the last mile of the race, reclaiming the triumph of crossing the finish line after explosives went off while many athletes were still running.

More than 2,000 runners and bombing victims gathered in light rain Saturday morning to run the final mile of the world’s oldest annual marathon. The event, known as OneRun, begins at Kenmore Square and concludes at the official finish line.

Explosions near the finish line killed three people and wounded more than 260 on April 15.

Organizer Kathleen McGonagle says OneRun honors victims and emergency workers and allows runners to reclaim the final mile.

The National Anthem was sung by the choir from St. Ann Parish, where 8-year-old victim Martin Richard’s family worshiped.

Michael Miller was sentenced Thursday in Lancaster County District Court.

Prosecutors say they had evidence that Miller had assaulted several boys in the 1980s and 1990s, but could only charge him for assaults on one boy because the statute of limitations barred them from prosecuting the other cases.

Beatrice High School Football Field Vandalized

beatrice-high-schoolAuthorities are looking for those responsible for irreparably damaging the Beatrice High School football field’s new artificial turf by spreading at least 100 pounds of birdseed over it.

School officials and police say several large bags of birdseed were ripped open and spread over the field sometime last weekend. To do that, whoever was responsible would have had to scale a 6-foot outer fence and 4-foot inner fence.

Coaches at Beatrice High School discovered the birdseed Monday.

Activities director Neal Randel says the birdseed has gotten into the fibers of the turf and that it can’t be removed without pulling up the crumb rubber that supports the turf.

The $2.3 million field was constructed last year and dedicated in August.
