Supreme Court to Review Sentence for KS Man in Murder of Sheriff

gavel-and-scaleThe Supreme Court has agreed to consider reinstating the conviction and death sentence of a man who said he was high on meth when he killed a Kansas sheriff.

The justices on Monday said they will review a state Supreme Court ruling that granted a new trial to Scott Cheever, who admitted to shooting Greenwood County Sheriff Matt Samuels.

The Kansas court said Cheever’s rights were violated during his trial because a psychiatrist was allowed to testify about Cheever’s psychological records without his consent.

Samuels’ death prompted changes in the Kansas criminal code to make it more difficult to purchase the ingredients used in making meth.

The case will be argued in the fall.

Lincoln Man Delivers Baby Girl on Sofa

storkMost fathers are excited to watch the birth of their child, however, a Lincoln man was able to do more than watch.

Sara Fritsch’s contractions were coming five minutes apart Thursday when she and her husband, Tom, bundled up their three children and drove them to a friend’s house to drop them off.

The hospital was about a 30 minute drive on snowy streets.  But, as Tom began to pull out of the driveway, Sara experienced another major contraction and told her husband she couldn’t make it to the hospital.

Tom, a volunteer firefighter for 23 years, escorted his wife back into the friends home where he washed up, prepared the sofa and delivered a healthy 5-pound, 10-ounce baby girl, Cecelia.

The Fritschs then drove to the hospital where they were informed by doctors that all was well with the newest addition to their family.

Pope Benedict Gives His Last Public Prayer Amid Sex Scandal

Pope-Benedict-XVIPope Benedict the 16th gave his last public prayer ceremony on Sunday in front of thousands at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City. Yet his retirement isn’t free of controversy, as talk of a sex scandal has emerged as he gets ready to leave his post.

The pope said “Thank you for your affection” to the crowd as he appeared in the window of his apartment, which overlooks the square. He added, “The Lord is calling me to go on top of the hill, to dedicate myself once more to prayer and meditation. But this does not mean to abandon the church.”

Thursday will be Benedict’s last day as pope. Some members of the Italian media believe that there may be more to his resignation, as allegations of a sex scandal involving gay clergy and male prostitutes has emerged.

The Vatican has denied the allegations with Vatican Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone calling the reports of the scandal as the election process begins to select a new pope “deplorable” as “often unverified, unverifiable of completely false news stories”  are published.

An attorney says about 50 more people have come forward to say they were sexually abused at schools in Ohio and Pennsylvania by a Franciscan brother who killed himself in January, bringing the total to over 60.

Attorney Mitchell Garabedian said Sunday that the accusers say the abuse happened between 1982 and 2007.

Authorities say 62-year-old Brother Stephen Baker stabbed himself at a western Pennsylvania monastery after the disclosure of financial settlements in 11 alleged abuse cases in Warren, Ohio.

Garabedian says the latest claims come from people who went to school in Warren and those who went to another school in Johnstown, Pa., where Baker taught and coached.

The Boston attorney says he’s also heard from a few people who say they were abused while Baker was at a school in Orchard Lake, Mich.
