Omaha Police ID Body Found In Lake

omaha-police Omaha authorities have identified a body recovered from a lake as a woman who went missing in November.

The Omaha Police Department says the body was positively identified Thursday as Che Dreessen. The body was recovered Wednesday from Lawrence Youngman Lake. Police say they suspect no foul play.

Dreessen’s family reported the 63-year-old as missing in early November. Her vehicle with the car keys still inside were found hours later. Authorities later initiated a search of the surrounding land and water.

Police did not release any additional information.

NE Legislature Considers Banning Police Drones

police-droneNebraska lawmakers are showing interest in a bill that would keep surveillance drones out of police hands.

The Legislature’s Judiciary Committee heard testimony Thursday in favor the measure, which would ban law enforcement agencies from using the technology.

Sen. Paul Schumacher of Columbus says the bill attempts to get ahead of aerial spyware that has become smaller, cheaper and more sophisticated. He says he expects manufacturers will start aggressively marketing the drones to law enforcement agencies.

Schumacher says lawmakers may want to consider exceptions for legitimate uses, such as search-and-rescue missions.

Some lawmakers noted that stalkers or peeping toms could use drones as well.

Sidney Police Chief Resigns in Surprising Move

sidney-policeSidney Police Chief Mike Brown surprised everyone at Tuesday night’s city council meeting by announcing near the end of the session that he’s resigning, with his last day to be in 2 weeks on the 28th.

Brown cited “family health issues” for stepping down, calling it was a decision that had to be made for his family and one that was not entered into lightly.

City Manager Gary Person says Brown will be terribly missed because the Sidney police officers felt his hiring was one of the best decisions the City had ever made. No decisions have been made yet on finding a new chief.

Brown’s resignation was the second of the night for the Sidney council, but the first was already known…with Councilman Aaron Barnes previously saying he was stepping down and moving to California.

Sentencing Set for Lincoln Woman Who Faked Hate Crime

charlie-rogersA judge has rescheduled the sentencing date for a Nebraska woman who pleaded no contest to faking an anti-gay hate crime.

Charlie Rogers will now face sentencing on March 14 in Lancaster County Court. A judge issued an order to delay the sentencing.

Rogers, a former University of Nebraska basketball star, was charged after she claimed she was attacked by three men who carved anti-gay slurs into her arms and stomach. Police later charged her with filing a false report, a misdemeanor.

Rogers maintains her innocence, but her attorney has said she didn’t want a court fight and more of the publicity that her case has generated.

The 34-year-old Rogers could face up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine when sentenced.

Kansas Homicide Suspect in Custody After Gunfight with NE Police

crime-scene-police-shootPolice say a suspect in a Topeka homicide is in custody after he engaged law enforcement officers in two gunfights in Nebraska.

Topeka police say in a news release that the 33-year-old man was arrested early Thursday after he allegedly robbed a convenience store and engaged in two gunfights in Johnson County, Neb., about 25 miles north of the Kansas-Nebraska border. One deputy was injured.

The man is a suspect in a shooting Wednesday in Topeka that left one man dead and a woman injured. The victim’s name has not been released.

Police said earlier that a woman and girl were with the suspect when he fled Topeka but it was unclear if they were with him when he was arrested.

Plane Hits Terminal at Central NE Regional Airport

central-ne-regional-airportNo injuries have been reported after a small plane ran into a terminal at the Central Nebraska Regional Airport in Grand Island.

The Associated Press reports that fire crews were dispatched to the scene just before 3 p.m. Wednesday because fuel was leaking from the single-engine aircraft.

Airport Executive Director Mike Olson says the pilot had started the engine and was preparing to taxi onto a runway when he lost power to the brakes and nose wheel control. The plane rolled into the front of the Trego Dugan terminal, breaking a window and denting the plane’s nose.

Records say the plane had landed in Grand Island on its way from Chicago to the Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport near Broomfield, Colo.

Former Hemingford Police Chief Pleads Not Guilty to Sexual Assault

mark-lindbergFormer Hemingford Police Chief Mark Lindburg has pleaded not guilty charges that he sexually assaulted a teenage girl.

Alliance radio station KCOW-AM reports that 52-year-old Mark Lindburg entered the pleas in Box Butte County District Court on Wednesday morning. Lindburg was arrested earlier this month. He is charged with first-degree sexual assault and child abuse.

Lindburg served as Hemingford’s police chief from November 2006 until he resigned without explanation in November 2011.

He also worked as a Box Butte County Deputy Sheriff for seven years and helped start a youth center in Hemingford in 2008.

Lindburg is in jail on $100,000 bail. His trial is set for April.

Til Death Do Us Part: Stats Show Nebraskans Waiting on Marriage

cupidLove may be in the Nebraska air on Valentine’s Day, but wedded bliss, not so much.

The latest state statistics suggest Nebraskans are waiting to get married, if at all.

The Associated Press reports that 4.9 percent of all 2011 marriages Nebraska involved a teenage bride or groom. The number was 13.2 percent just 25 years ago.  And more than half of all Nebraska marriages in 2011 involved a bride or groom who was at least 30 years old. Twenty-five years ago the figure was 36.1 percent.

The state marriage rate peaked in 1970 at 10.6 marriages per 1,000 people annually. In 2011 the rate had dropped to 6.6 marriages per 1,000 people.

Misfire: Broken Bow Man Convicted of Shooting at Empty Cruiser

custer-county-sheriffA 36-year-old Broken Bow man accused of shooting at an unoccupied Custer County sheriff’s department vehicle has been convicted.

A Custer County jury on Wednesday found Trent Esch guilty of felony criminal mischief and using a weapon to commit a felony. Prosecutors say Esch fired several bullets at the deputy’s vehicle while it was parked at the deputy’s home in Broken Bow on March 18 last year. No one was injured.

Prosecutors say Esch apparently had a personal vendetta against the deputy, who arrested Esch after he violated probation.

Esch is scheduled to be sentenced on March 21.
