FDA Warns Of Counterfeit Drug

drugsThe Food and Drug Administration is warning doctors about another counterfeit version of the cancer drug Avastin distributed in the U.S., the third case involving the best-selling Roche drug in the past year.

The FDA said in an online post that at least one batch of the drug distributed by a New York distributor does not contain the active ingredient in real Avastin, which is used to treat cancers of the colon, lung, kidney and brain. The drug was distributed by Medical Device King, which also does business as Pharmalogical. The vials are packaged as Altuzan, the Turkish version of Avastin that is not approved for use in the U.S.

The agency warned doctors last April about a similar case of fake Turkish Avastin distributed by a U.K. distributor.

Two Children Die In Denver Shooting

police-lights-redDenver police say two children under 10 years old and a woman were killed and a third child was wounded in an apparent shooting at a house in the northeast part of the city.

Police Lt. Matt Murray says that child is in critical condition.

Investigators are waiting for a warrant to re-enter the house.

Murray says it appears to have been an isolated shooting and there’s no indication the shooter is still on the loose.

The neighborhood is in an industrial area, surrounded by warehouses and a trucking terminal, near the National Western Stock Show complex.

Neighbor Debbie Martinez says the house was recently sold.

Rodas was sentenced on Tuesday.

Court documents say Rodas paid $200 for a Social Security number and identification that she used in April 2009 to get the job.

BSA’s Policy Ban On Gays Soon Up For A Vote

BSAThe Boy Scouts of America’s policy excluding gay members and leaders could be up for a vote as soon as Wednesday, when the organization’s national executive board meets behind closed doors under intense pressure from several sides.

BSA announced last week it was considering allowing troops to decide whether to allow gay membership. That news has placed a spotlight on executive board meetings that began Monday in Irving, Texas, where scouting headquarters is located.

BSA spokesman Deron Smith said last week that the board could take a vote Wednesday or decide to discuss the policy, but the organization will issue a statement either way.

The board has remained silent otherwise.

Meanwhile, groups on all sides have organized to try to make their voices heard.

Chris Brown Runs Into Trouble At Court

CbrownChris Brown returns to court Wednesday to face a judge who will determine how much credence to give prosecutors’ allegations that the R&B singer has failed to complete his community labor sentence.

Prosecutors filed a motion on Tuesday asking Superior Court Judge James Brandlin to revoke Brown’s probation for the 2009 beating of Rihanna. They cite inconsistent and possibly falsified records of Brown’s community service in Virginia and other incidents they say demonstrate that the Grammy winner has anger issues.

Brown’s attorney Mark Geragos calls the filing scurrilous and defamatory.

Deputy District Attorney Mary Murray says there is no credible evidence Brown performed the hours as planned. Her filing claims Brown was essentially unsupervised in Virginia and should be punished for a recent fight with singer Frank Ocean.

Postal Service To Halt Saturday Mail Delivery

USPS-Mailboxes

The head of the letter carriers union says it’s a “disastrous idea.”

Fredric Rolando is reacting to the announcement that Saturday mail delivery will come to an end in August. Under the plan — aimed at saving up to $2 billion a year — mail would go to homes and businesses from Monday through Friday. Packages would still be delivered on Saturday.

Rolando says the move will hurt “millions of customers” — particularly businesses, rural communities, the elderly, the disabled and others who depend on Saturday delivery. He also says it goes against the will of Congress as expressed over the past 30 years.

But the postmaster general, Patrick Donahoe, says research indicates that nearly 7 in 10 Americans support the switch to five-day delivery as a way for the Postal Service to reduce costs.

It’s not clear how the service will be able to eliminate Saturday mail without congressional approval. Over the past several years, the Postal Service has advocated shifting to a five-day delivery schedule for mail and packages, and it unsuccessfully appealed to Congress to approve the move. The postal service gets no tax dollars for its day-to-day operations, but it is still subject to congressional control.

Authorities Finger Out Total Loss In Student Tug Of War Accident

class_roomTwo teenagers whose fingers were severed during a tug-of-war game at a Southern California school are awake and alert after undergoing surgery.

Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center spokeswoman Rosa Sacca says the boy and girl have stable vital signs Tuesday and their parents are at their bedsides. But she is not able to say whether doctors were able to reattach their fingers.

Authorities say the students were taking part in a lunchtime game at suburban South El Monte High School on Monday and had wrapped their hands around the rope when it snapped, amputating their fingers.

Authorities say the students lost four fingers each on their right hands and the girl also lost the thumb on her left hand.

The school district plans to review its policies regarding tug-of-war games.

Shoestrong Family Attacked By GI Dog

Authorities say Kayla Shoestring has been taken to a Lincoln hospital for treatment. Her 4-year-old son, Hayden, remained in a Grand Island hospital.

Central Nebraska Humane Society Executive Director Laurie Dethloff says the Shoestrings were visiting a Grand Island home on Monday when the boy went into the backyard with a male and female pit bull.

Hayden began screaming when the male attacked him. Kayla Shoestring ran outside and got Hayden away from the male dog, but the dog then attacked her. The female never joined the attacks.

The dogs’ owner has decided to have the male dog euthanized.
