One Dies In Eastern Nebraska Car Accident

ambulanceA driver has been killed in a car crash along U.S. Highway 81 six miles south of Columbus in eastern Nebraska.

The Columbus Telegram reports that the accident occurred about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

A witness says the car veered off the highway.

The crash cause is being investigated. The driver’s name hasn’t been released.

Nebraska Game & Parks Trains Instructors

The session is scheduled to run from 6 p.m.to 9 p.m. Monday at the Elba Community Center in the central Nebraska community of Elba.

Five Year Old Boy Freed From Alabama Bunker

police-lights-redRelatives of the 5-year-old boy freed when federal agents raided the underground bunker of a hostage-taker in Alabama say the youngster is relieved to be home and appears to be doing well.

The boy’s great uncle, Berlin Enfinger, said in an interview on ABC’s Good Morning America early Tuesday that “he’s happy to be home, and he looks good.”

After nearly a week, FBI agents determined that talks with Jimmy Lee Dykes were breaking down and they stormed the bunker and rescued the child Monday. The 65-year-old armed captor was killed by law enforcement officials, an official told The Associated Press.

Dykes was accused of fatally shooting a school bus driver Jan. 29 before seizing the child from among a busload of students and taking him to the bunker.

Older Than 80 And Still Driving? You May Need To Test Your Skills

car_explosionA Nebraska lawmaker wants to require drivers older than age 80 to pass cognitive tests to ensure the elderly are physically and mentally capable of driving.

The Legislature’s Transportation and Telecommunication’s Committee will hear from advocates and opponents of Scottsbluff Sen. John Harms’ bill on Tuesday.

Harms says he introduced the bill after hearing from constituents who had a hard time telling their elderly family members they weren’t able to safely drive anymore.

Nebraska Highway Safety administrator Fred Zwonechek says the number of older drivers is increasing in Nebraska, while their vehicle accident rate has been decreasing.

Oxford Man Dies After Icy Crash

ambulance A 51-year-old man has died three days after he was injured in a crash off an icy rural highway in south-central Nebraska.

The Associated Press reports that Tommy Wheeler died Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

The Harlan County Sheriff’s Office says Wheeler was driving on Nebraska Highway 46 about two miles north of Oxford when he lost control of his pickup on the slick roadway. The truck slid into a roadside ditch, struck a fence and rolled.

Wheeler was taken to Phelps Memorial Hospital in Holdrege and then to Good Samaritan.

Self-Described ‘Chick Bank Robber’ Pleads Not Guilty in NE Bank Robbery Case

Hannah-SabataA 20-year-old woman from Stromsburg has pleaded not guilty to a Waco, Nebraska bank robbery.

The Associated Press reports that Hannah Sabata entered her pleas in York County District Court on Monday.  She also uses the alias Hannah Smotherman.

According to court records, Sabata is charged with felony robbery and two counts of felony theft.  She is accused of robbing the Cornerstone Bank in Waco on November 28 and stealing a car in York.

She was arrested and charged the next day.

Sabata gained fame by dubbing herself the “Chick Bank Robber,” and bragging about the crime in a YouTube video.

Crappy Birthday: Around 30 LBS Weed Found Wrapped In Birthday Wrapping Paper

pot_plotNearly 30 lbs. of marijuana covered in birthday wrapping paper was seized and a California man jailed after a weekend traffic stop on Interstate 80 in Cass County.

Just after noon on Saturday, February 2, a trooper stopped an eastbound 2012 Toyota Camry for following to close near the Greenwood exit on Interstate 80. An NSP canine indicated the odor of drugs coming from the vehicle. A search of the car led to the seizure of 29.5 lbs. of marijuana. The marijuana, contained in 13 individual packages was located in a box wrapped in birthday paper in the trunk of the vehicle.

The driver and lone occupant of the vehicle, Johnny C. Hatchett, 52, West Sacramento, Calif., was lodged in the Cass County Jail on a charge of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.

Fort Calhoun Under Question

fort_calA Nebraska environmental group is questioning the track record of the company hired to run the Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant because of concerns federal regulators raised.

The Clean Nebraska group said Monday that questions the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is raising about some of the calculations Exelon made for its other nuclear plants are troubling.

The NRC says it is looking into whether Chicago-based Exelon intentionally understated the cost of decommissioning many of its nuclear plants.

Exelon spokesman David Tillman says the company denies intentionally providing incorrect data. Tillman says the calculations are complicated and Exelon looks forward to meeting with the NRC.

The Omaha Public Power District hired Exelon last year because of its experience and safe track record. Fort Calhoun has been idle since 2011.

Lincoln Apartment Fire Hospitalizes One

House-FireA tenant has been treated at a hospital after a fire at a Lincoln apartment.

Lincoln Fire Battalion Chief Bruce Sellon says the blaze was reported about 8:30 p.m. Sunday. The fire was mostly contained to a pile of clothes.

The tenant was treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire cause is being investigated.

 

Three Accidents Take The Lives Of Three Nebraskans

NSPAuthorities are investigating three separate crashes that killed three people in northeast Nebraska.

All of the accidents happened between Friday morning and Sunday.

The Nebraska State Patrol says 20-year-old Joshua Lytle of Page died early Saturday when the vehicle he was riding in rolled over at a rural intersection west of Newman Grove. Two others in the vehicle were hurt.

A few hours later 33-year-old Samuel Hobbs of Ewing died after losing control of his vehicle. The vehicle rolled near a bridge over U.S. Highway 275 east of Ewing.

Brian Chase was killed Friday three miles west of Newcastle. The Dixon County Sheriff’s office says the 48-year-old Newcastle man was a passenger in a car that struck a tree. The driver was flown to a Sioux City hospital.
