Sandy Hook Students Return To Class

Classes are resuming for Sandy Hook Elementary School students for the first time since last month’s shooting that killed 20 children and six educators.

The more than 400 students are attending classes Thursday at a refurbished school in a neighboring town that has been given the same name as their old school.

The school district says parents who want to be close to their children are welcome to visit and stay in classrooms or an auditorium throughout the day. Parents were encouraged to have their children take the bus to help them return to familiar routines.

The gunman, Adam Lanza, killed his mother before going on the rampage at the school on Dec. 14 and then committing suicide. Police have not offered a possible motive.

Lincoln Inmate Slapped With More Time For A Sneaky Crime

A Lincoln inmate has been given more time after his mother smuggled methamphetamine-laced material into prison.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports Andre Baskin was sentenced Wednesday to one to two years for the incident. But credit for time served means he will be released in less than two months.

Baskin’s mother, Julie, is accused of secreting the methamphetamine-laced threads under stamps sent to her son in December 2010. She has pleaded not guilty to a charge of conspiracy to convey an article to an inmate. She is awaiting trial.

Baskin was serving a four- to six-year sentence at the time at Nebraska State Penitentiary. He was later released and living in a halfway house when the meth smuggling case sent him back to prison.

Kansas Sperm Donor Might Have To Pay Child Support

Kansas is trying to force a man who donated sperm to a lesbian couple to pay child support.

William Marotta and the two women signed an agreement they believed released him from all parental duties. But the state argues the agreement is invalid because they didn’t go through a doctor for the artificial insemination.

Kansas law says a doctor’s involvement shields a man from being held responsible for a child conceived through the procedure. The state says at least 10 other states have similar laws.

The state says that means Marotta, who lives in Topeka, can be held responsible for about $6,000 that the child’s biological mother received through public assistance as well as future child support.

Marotta wants the case dismissed. A hearing is Tuesday.

NSP Made 101 Drunk Driving Arrests During Holiday Enforcement, Speed Stops= 1,555 Drivers

The Nebraska State Patrol made 101 drunken driving arrests and stopped 1,555 drivers for speeding during its special holiday enforcement this year.

State troopers worked extra hours between Dec. 14 and Jan. 1 as part of the enforcement campaign.

Besides the drunken driving and speeding charges, the patrol also issued 98 tickets for driving on a suspended license.

Another 114 drivers received tickets for not having proof of their insurance. And 320 seat belt citations or warnings were issued.

Teenagers Allegedly Drugged Parents So They Could Use The Internet

Police say two California teenagers used a prescription sleeping medication to spike the milkshakes of too-strict parents so they could log onto the Internet.

The parents called police and the 15-year-old Rocklin girl and a 16-year-old friend were taken to Juvenile Hall. Rocklin is 20 miles northeast of Sacramento.

The Sacramento BeeĀ reports the girls offered to pick up milkshakes at a fast-food restaurant for the parents of one of the girls on Friday night.

The drug was mixed into the shakes and the couple fell asleep. The suspicious parents picked up a drug test kit the following day.

The girls told investigators they wanted to use the Internet, which was shut down daily at 10 p.m.

It’s unclear what the girls did on the Internet.

Subaru Recalls 2009-2012 Cars & SUVs For Possible Fire Threat

Subaru is recalling nearly 634,000 cars and SUVs in the U.S. because lights beneath the doors can overheat and cause fires.

The recall affects all Outback and Legacy cars from model years 2010 and 2011. Also included are Tribeca SUVs from 2006 through 2012 and Forester SUVs from 2009 through 2012. Subaru says the Tribecas and Foresters were sold before January of 2012.

The company says moisture can get into puddle lights beneath the doors and cause a short circuit that can melt plastic and cause fires.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says on its website that Subaru will install an additional fuse at no cost to the owners. The recall is expected to begin in February.

Hillary Making A Promising Recovery

The State Department says Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is speaking with staff and reviewing paperwork while she continues to recover from a blood clot in her head.

Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland says Clinton has been “quite active” on the phone Wednesday with State Department aides. She says doctors will continue to monitor her progress.

Clinton was admitted to a New York hospital Sunday and is being treated with blood thinners to dissolve a clot in the vein behind the right ear. Doctors found the clot during a follow-up exam stemming from a concussion she suffered in early December.

Clinton’s doctors say there was no neurological damage and they expect she will make a full recovery.

Prison Time for NE Woman Who Lied About Rape

Jennifer Valenta

A southeast Nebraska woman accused of lying about being raped has been sentenced to at least two years in prison.

Jennifer Valenta of Wilber was sentenced Wednesday in Gage County District Court to 32 to 60 months in prison. That means she could serve up to five years.

Valenta, who made a plea deal with prosecutors, pleaded no contest in November to evidence tampering, false reporting and attempted prostitution.

Valenta told authorities she was raped by four men at the Big Indian Recreation Area in November 2011. Investigators later determined her injuries did not match a timeline of the alleged rape.

Valenta will be eligible for parole in 16 months.

3 UP Employees Injured at Bailey Yard

Two employees have been taken to a burn unit for treatment after they were injured while working on a rail car at Union Pacific’s Bailey Yard in North Platte.

Railroad spokesman Mark Davis says the two and another worker were using a blowtorch on the coupler end of a car when the accident occurred Saturday. A hot oil, likely hydraulic fluid, spilled onto the workers, burning hands and faces.

All three workers were taken to Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte. One was treated and released. The other two were taken to a burn unit. Davis declined to disclose their names.

The accident is being investigated.

Omaha Police Kill Man in Standoff

Authorities say a man killed during a police standoff in northeast Omaha was armed with a shotgun, making suicidal and threatening statements, and holding a child.

Omaha police said Tuesday that 31-year-old Tyree Bell, of Omaha, was shot by officers at 6:20 a.m. Tuesday, after more than two hours of negotiations.

Police say they were called to the scene shortly after 4 a.m. Authorities say negotiators tried to calm Bell, but the situation deteriorated to the point where they believed he posed an immediate threat to officers and the child.

At least four officers fired their weapons. Police say Bell was shot multiple times. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The department has launched an internal investigation. The officers will be placed on paid, administrative leave.
