Paparazzo Killed After Snapping Shot of Bieber’s Ferrari

Police say a paparazzo was hit by a car and killed after taking photos of Justin Bieber’s Ferrari sports car in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles police officer James Stoughton says the man died Tuesday evening at a hospital. Stoughton says Bieber was not in the car at the time.

Sgt. Rudy Lopez told the Los Angeles Times that the pop star’s friend was driving the car when it was pulled over for a traffic stop. It was parked on a busy street when the photographer arrived.

Police say the man was struck by a car as he returned to his own car.

Stoughton says no charges are expected against the motorist who hit the man.

A call to a Bieber publicist was not immediately returned.

Omaha Family Finds Stray Bullet Under the Christmas Tree

A bullet from a gun fired into the air to celebrate New Year’s came down in a north Omaha family’s living room.

James Nichol told Omaha television station KETV  on Tuesday that after ripping through the roof and ceiling, the bullet rolled under the Christmas tree.

Nichol says his house was filled with family members on New Year’s Eve.

He says people don’t need to fire guns into the air to celebrate and says, “This is scary to me.”

Bellevue Claims First NE Baby of 2013

Colton Alexander Ray likely was the first baby born in 2013 in Nebraska.

Officials say the 6-pound, 21-inch lad arrived at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday at Bellevue Medical Center.

The early morning delivery came too late for Colton’s parents, Air Force Staff Sgt. Ross Ray and his wife, Kayla Ray, to claim him on their 2012 tax return.

Other babies born early on New Year’s Day in Nebraska include a girl born at 1:51 a.m. at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha and a boy born at 2:44 a.m. at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff.

3 Escape House Fire in Norfolk

Three people escaped without injury from a fire that damaged a house in the northeast Nebraska city of Norfolk.

Authorities say the blaze was reported just before 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Firefighters say flames in the ceiling above the kitchen spread to an outside wall and ultimately reached the roof. Damage is estimated at $45,000 to the structure, $5,000 to the contents.

One firefighter was injured when he slipped and fell on ice.

An electrical problem is suspected, but the fire investigation is continuing.

Members-Only Marijuana Clubs Open in Colorado

Recreational marijuana clubs are open in Colorado.

A marijuana den in Denver opened Monday for members-only group smoking . Reggae music was on the stereo and a projector showed “The Big Lebowski.”

Another club opened Monday in Del Norte, in southern Colorado. The clubs are not open to the public.

An attorney for Denver’s new Club 64 says the clubs are permissible under Colorado’s new constitutional amendment on marijuana. Marijuana will not be sold at the clubs. He said Club 64 has 200 members over age 21 who paid $29.99 for a one-time club event. It is named for Amendment 64, which voters approved last month

Nearly an hour after opening, no police were seen outside Club 64.

Autopsy Confirms Homicide in Death of Lincoln Man

Authorities have reported no arrests in the homicide investigation launched after a Lincoln man’s body was found in a rural area north of Lincoln.

Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner says a preliminary autopsy report has confirmed that Tyler Schoenrock was shot to death. Schoenrock’s bullet-riddled body was found early Sunday morning by a newspaper carrier. Several shell casings were found at the scene.

Wagner wouldn’t say whether investigators have any suspects.

Online court records show the 25-year-old Schoenrock, of Lincoln, had trouble with the law. In October 2009 he was given three years of probation for drug convictions. In February 2006 Schoenrock was given two years of probation after pleading guilty to being an accessory to a robbery.

NE Traffic Deaths Rise in 2012

A mild winter and little rain are being blamed for a jump in Nebraska traffic deaths last year.

The total as of Monday was 207, compared with 181 in 2011 and 190 in 2010.

State highway safety administrator Fred Zwonechek stated that most people drive slower and more cautiously when snow, ice or rain make roadways more perilous.

Zwonechek cited for example the deaths of 22 people on Nebraska roads in January last year, compared with seven and eight the previous two years.

Conn., Gunman’s Father Claims Body

The father of the gunman who killed 26 people in a Connecticut school shooting has claimed his son’s body.

A spokesman for the family said Monday that Peter Lanza claimed the remains of Adam Lanza. He says there were private arrangements over the weekend, but won’t elaborate on what those arrangements were.

The 20-year-old Adam Lanza killed 20 first-graders and six adults at the Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14. He also killed his mother in their Newtown home before going on the rampage and committing suicide.

The Connecticut medical examiner’s office says his body was released on Thursday.

A private funeral was held earlier this month in New Hampshire for his mother, Nancy Lanza, who was divorced from Peter Lanza.

Police haven’t offered a motive for the killings.

Man Accused Of Setting Homeless Woman On Fire

The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office has charged a 24-year-old man with attempted murder for allegedly setting a homeless woman on fire as she slept on a suburban bus bench.

Deputy District Attorney Sean Carney says Dennis Petillo is scheduled to be arraigned Monday. Prosecutors will ask that his bail be set at $1.03 million.

In addition to attempted murder, he is charged with aggravated mayhem.

Carney alleges that Petillo threw a flammable liquid on the 67-year-old woman, who had slept on the bench for years, then set her on fire last Thursday.

The victim remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

If convicted, Petillo faces a maximum of up to life in state prison if convicted. It’s not known if he has retained an attorney.

One Dead After Omaha Shooting

Authorities say a man has died after a shooting at a house in north Omaha.

Police say officers who were sent to the house a little after 12:30 a.m. Monday found a man who had been shot at least twice. He was taken to Nebraska Medical Center in critical condition. Police say he was pronounced dead there a short time later.

The man’s name and other details about what happened have not been released. No arrests have been reported.
