Whiteclay Protest Planned For New Year’s Eve

Another protest over alcohol sales in the Nebraska town of Whiteclay is planned for New Year’s Eve.

Two Native American groups said Sunday that they will try to prevent alcohol sold in Nebraska from reaching the Pine Ridge reservation where alcohol is banned.

The Oglala Lakota Women and Deep Green Resistance groups say they will set up a blockade on the reservation’s southern border starting at 9 p.m. Monday.

Alcohol sales in the town of Whiteclay have long been a concern for the Oglala Sioux Tribe because alcoholism and poverty are rampant on the reservation. The town of roughly a dozen people sold the equivalent of 4.3 million 12-ounce cans of beer last year.

Lake Superior State University’s 38th Annual List Of Banished Words

Spoiler alert: This story contains words and phrases that some people want to ban from the English language. “Spoiler alert” is among them. So are “kick the can down the road,” ”trending” and “bucket list.”

A dirty dozen have landed on the 38th annual List of Words to be Banished from the Queen’s English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness. The nonbinding, tongue-in-cheek decree released Monday by Michigan’s Lake Superior State University is based on nominations submitted by the public.

“Fiscal cliff” garnered the most votes based on how often news media outlets use it to describe across-the-board federal tax increases and spending cuts that economists say could harm the economy in 2013 without congressional action.

Other terms up for a literary lashing are “superfood,” ”guru” and “double down.”

Lake Superior State University’s 38th annual list of banished words:

— fiscal cliff

— kick the can down the road

— double down

— job creators/creation

— passion/passionate

— YOLO

— spoiler alert

— bucket list

— trending

— superfood

— boneless wings

— guru

Katt Williams Arrested Again, Out On Bail

Katt Williams, the comedian who has repeatedly found himself on the wrong side of the law, is out on bail after being arrested in Los Angeles on suspicion of child endangerment and possession of a stolen gun.

Police Officer Norma Eisenman says Williams was taken into custody Friday after the LA County Department of Children and Family Services did a welfare check at his home. Authorities found more than one firearm, one of which had been reported stolen.

Eisenman says the DCFS did not specify how many children lived at the home or whether they were removed.

The 41-year-old was arrested this month on a felony warrant related to a police chase. In November, he was accused of hitting a man on the head with a bottle during a fight.

Clinton Treated For Blood Clot After A Recent Concussion Which Followed A Stomach Virus

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is under observation at a New York hospital after being treated for a blood clot stemming from the concussion she sustained earlier this month.

Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines says doctors discovered the clot Sunday while performing a follow-up exam. He would not elaborate on the location of the clot.

But he says Clinton is being treated with anti-coagulants and will remain at New York-Presbyterian Hospital through at least Tuesday.

Clinton fell and suffered a concussion in mid-December as she recovered from a stomach virus that left her severely dehydrated. She was forced to cancel a trip to North Africa and the Middle East as well as testimony before Congress about the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya.

Tour Bus Crash in Oregon Kills 9, Injures 20

Oregon State Police now say nine people have died in the Sunday morning bus crash along an icy Oregon highway.

Authorities say the bus careened through a guardrail and down a steep embankment, killing nine and injuring about 20 others.

The charter bus carrying about 40 people lost control around 10:30 a.m. on the snow- and ice-covered lanes of Interstate 84.

The bus came to rest at the bottom of a snowy slope. More than a dozen rescue workers descended the hill and used ropes to help retrieve people from the wreckage in freezing weather.

Landlord Kills Tenants Over Parking Dispute

Police say a 74-year-old Maine man faces charges in the shooting deaths of two tenants inside an apartment he rented at his home over a possible dispute about where they were parking their cars during a snowstorm.

Maine State Police say James Pak was arrested at about 10 p.m. Saturday following a standoff at his home in Biddeford. He is charged with killing 19-year-old Derrick Thompson and Thompson’s girlfriend, 18-year-old Alivia Welch.

Officials say police were called Saturday evening regarding a dispute over cars being parked in Pak’s driveway during the snowstorm. Minutes after police left, they received a call reporting the shootings.

Thompson’s mother, 44-year-old Susan Johnson, was being treated for a gunshot wound at Maine Medical Center in Portland. Johnson’s 6-year-old son was not hurt.

Newspaper Carrier Finds Body in Lincoln

Authorities are investigating after a Lincoln newspaper carrier found a dead body.

The newspaper carrier found the 25-year-old man’s body in a rural area north of Lincoln around 4:45 a.m. on Sunday.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s office is investigating the death.

Officials say it does not appear the man died of natural causes, but they released few details about his death.

2 Teens and a 12 Year Old Charged in North Carolina Murder

Two teenagers and a 12-year-old girl have been charged in the shooting death of a North Carolina man during a carjacking.

Investigators say the three approached 35-year-old Johnny Danilo Villatoro of Durham on Friday night and asked him for a ride before carjacking and shooting him. Authorities found Villatoro lying in the street, and he later died at a hospital.

Police say the 12-year-old suspect accidentally shot herself in the stomach and leg while inside Villatoro’s car. She was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries and was expected to survive.

Authorities say the 12-year-old and two other suspects, ages 14 and 16, are being charged with murder. It wasn’t known if any of them had attorneys or when they would appear in court.

Possible Legislation Could Make Texting and No Seat Belt a Primary Offense in NE

A Nebraska highway safety official says discussions are afoot for legislation next year that would make it a primary offense to text while driving.

Nebraska Highway Safety Administrator Fred Zwonechek is eyeing at least two proposals designed to improve driver safety.

One proposal would apply to texting while driving. The other would make it a primary offense for drivers and front-seat passengers to not wear seatbelts.

Current Nebraska law considers driving without a seat belt a secondary offense. That means motorists can’t be cited unless they’re already being cited for another violation.

Zwonechek says he’s in favor of introducing the measures just to bring the issue into the spotlight.

Number of New Year’s Eve Fireworks Stands Down in NE

A Nebraska state law that let local governments decide whether to allow fireworks sales for the New Year’s Eve holiday is proving to be a bit of a dud.

The number of stands declined this year to 27, down from 28 last year. The Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s office says there 45 in 2010, the year the law went into effect.

Assistant State Fire Marshal Jim Heine says he can’t point to a specific reason for the decline, but he speculates that low temperatures are a factor.

Heine says some retailers told him they would only try selling fireworks in winter for five years after the law went into effect to see what would happen to sales.
