Farm Tractor Struck By Train

(Lincoln County Sheriff) On June 15th, 2012 at 3:46 pm, Deputies from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office were asked to respond to a private railroad crossing near mile marker 151 on U.S. Highway 30.     It was reported a large farm tractor was struck by a Union Pacific train.   The private crossing is very near the Lincoln / Keith County Line, just south of Highway 30.

Deputies along with Sutherland Rescue responded to the scene and located the 24 year old male driver of the tractor Justin Christner of Sutherland, NE.   Mr. Christner was injured but alert; he was transported to Great Plains Regional Medical Center for treatment. Mr. Christner was reported to have multiple injuries but in stable condition.   The train crew reported they were not injured as a result of the accident.

Preliminary investigation revealed the tractor Mr. Christner was driving a Case 225CVT was stopped waiting for a westbound train to pass.  After the westbound train passed, Mr. Christner drove the tractor south across the tracks.    Mr. Christner apparently could not see an approaching eastbound train, as the westbound train obstructed his view.  The eastbound train was on the south track and upon contact, pushed the tractor off the train tracks.

Train traffic was not completely shut down and Union Pacific Special Agents responded to assist in the investigation.     Further investigation will follow.

FREMONT, Neb. (AP) — The American Water Works Association says Fremont has the best-tasting water in the country.

Local Fremont media says the city won the association’s annual Best of the Best Water Taste Test, besting the regional winners from across North America.

Officials say the city water treatment plant adds fluoride and a little chlorine and a substance to control manganese.

GED Testing Meets Technology

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Adults taking a GED test in Lincoln, Hastings and Norfolk will soon have the option to answer all of the questions on computers.

Nebraska Department of Education administrators announced that they will offer the new, computer-based tests starting June 25. The remaining 28 Nebraska-based testing centers will allow computerized GED testing no later than January.

Nebraska adult education state director Vicki Bauer says the computerized system expands access to the GED tests and will help more adults find jobs. Bauer says the new system offers better security, more flexible scheduling for test-takers, and instant scores in four out of the five content areas.

The GED test still must be taken in-person at an official testing center. Computerized GED testing will cost $24 for each content area.

Sirens activated in Hawaii from Nebraska

HONOLULU (AP) — Civil defense sirens that sounded across Oahu even though there was no emergency were inadvertently activated from Nebraska.

Hawaii Civil Defense spokeswoman Kelly Kunishige (COO’-nee-SHE’-gay) says eight sirens accidentally went off early Thursday because of an engineer doing upgrade work in Nebraska.

Illinois-based Federal Signal has been contracted to do modernization work for Hawaii’s more than 300 sirens across the islands. The state asked the contractor to do some checks, but after doing so, Hawaii’s siren protocols were not removed from the system, allowing some to be activated.

Kunishige says the project will allow sirens to be activated by satellite or cell phone in case radios are down.

The sirens are used during emergencies such as tsunamis.

Tsunami waves struck Hawaii in the aftermath of Japan’s earthquake last year.

Nebraska unemployment rate lowest since December 2008

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska authorities say the state’s unemployment rate remained at 3.9 percent in May, still the state’s lowest rate since December 2008.

The May and April rate is slightly lower than the March rate of 4.0 percent. A year ago the Nebraska rate for May was 4.5 percent.

Nebraska’s rate remains the second-lowest in the nation, following only North Dakota’s 3.0 percent.

The national rate rose in May to 8.2 percent from 8.1 percent in April.

Nebraska Supreme Court Puts Block on Divorcing Couples

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court says judges can’t order divorcing couples to file joint federal tax returns.

But the high court said in a ruling released Friday that if one spouse is unreasonably refusing to file a joint tax return, the judge can adjust the way the couple’s assets are divided.

Filing a joint tax return usually results in lower tax liability, but the high court said ordering a couple to file jointly is problematic because one spouse would be exposed to some unknown additional tax liability.

And federal law allows married couples to choose to file separately if they want to.

The Supreme Court ruling overturned a previous order in the divorce of Jennifer Lynn Dalbey and Matthew John Bock. Dalbey had objected to the joint tax returns.

Man with DUI convictions receives Liquor License

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A man with a history of drunken-driving convictions has been given a state liquor license for a Lincoln business.

Local media reports that the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission granted the license on Thursday to Jeremy Schafer for his Top Shelf Beverage Services.

The commission says the license would be revoked if the business or its owners were to have any liquor violation or convictions in the next year.

The 38-year-old Schafer’s most recent DUI conviction was for third offense drunken driving in July 2009.

Schafer says he had abused alcohol to cope with a diagnosis of cancer he’d been given. He told the board he doesn’t drink anymore except to taste wine for his business.

His business partner also has two recent DUI convictions.

Alliance Gunman Believed Responsible for Josh Bullock Disappearance
