Banker sentenced; restitution of about $122K already paid

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha banker has been sentenced for misapplying bank funds and forging documents.

Court records say 60-year-old Keith McCormick was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court in Omaha to three years of supervised release and ordered to pay restitution of $122,000.

Prosecutors say McCormick was senior vice president of business banking at Security National Bank when, from July 2012 to June 2015, he misapplied bank funds, forged documents and hid information from bank management about a series of loans. The loans went into default, causing the bank to lose about $122,000.

Prosecutors say McCormick already has paid the money back.

Columbus police to let public listen to some radio traffic

COLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — Columbus police are joining the sheriff’s office in allowing public access to some radio traffic between dispatchers and law enforcement officers.

The police have been using only an encrypted channel since its transition to a new digital radio system in November. Police Chief Chuck Sherer said at the time that “some of the things we say in our business aren’t necessarily meant for public consumption.”

The Platte County Sheriff’s Office also is going digital as it shifts to a new statewide radio system. Sheriff Ed Wemhoff says he plans to use the encrypted channel only for sensitive information, including particulars that, if available to the public, could imperil officers.

Sherer has decided to join the county in letting the public monitor the less-sensitive radio traffic.

Snyder is one of nine former council members accused of a conspiracy to steal money from the WinnaVegas Casino Resort in Sloan, Iowa.

Man pleads no contest to leaving scene of fatal accident

YORK, Neb. (AP) — A York man has pleaded no contest to leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

56-year-old Douglas Sandall entered the plea Monday in York County District Court. His sentencing is scheduled for March 12.

Deputies found the body of 41-year-old Chad Chapman in a roadside ditch on Aug. 19, about 3 miles (5 kilometers) west of York. York County Attorney Christopher Johnson says Sandall was driving on Road 11 when he passed a truck parked in the road with a door open. Sandall reported that he thought he hit a gravel embankment, so he stopped to check the damage and saw the body in the ditch.

Johnson says Sandall then went home. He and his wife soon returned to the scene and she called 911.

Man takes plea deal in fatal shooting of Omaha resident

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A March 1 sentencing has been scheduled for a 23-year-old man who took a plea deal in the fatal shooting of an Omaha resident.

Police say Hall and 25-year-old Tontavious Montgomery shot to death 22-year-old Terrance Gunn in May 2016. Montgomery has been found not competent for trial and been ordered to undergo treatment at the state psychiatric hospital in Lincoln.

Officials say deputy shot York man who tried to take cruiser

SEWARD, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a sheriff’s deputy has shot a man who tried to take the deputy’s vehicle.

The shooting occurred a little after 9 a.m. Saturday, when the deputy arrived to investigate a reported home invasion about 4 miles (7 kilometers) southeast of Seward.

The Seward County Sheriff’s Office says the deputy spotted a man who matched the suspect’s description and says the man became violent when the deputy confronted him. The Sheriff’s Office says the man tried to flee in the deputy’s vehicle and didn’t comply with the deputy’s orders even after being shot twice by the deputy’s stun gun.

The Sheriff’s Office says the deputy finally used a regular firearm to shoot the man, who’s been hospitalized.

The man’s been identified as Cody Nielsen, of York. The deputy’s name hasn’t been released.

Nebraska high court to decide whether teen tried as an adult

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An appeal of a judge’s decision to try in juvenile court the case of a teenager accused of attacking his parents before shooting at Douglas County sheriff’s deputies is scheduled to be heard by the Nebraska Supreme Court.

Prosecutors appealed Judge Marlon Polk’s ruling in November. Prosecutors want the 17-year-old tried as an adult.

Authorities say the 17-year-old fired on deputies Sept. 3 when they responded to the boy’s Waterloo home. Deputy John McFarland suffered minor injuries when he was hit by shotgun pellets. The teen lost a kidney after being shot by one of the deputies who returned fire. Investigators say the deputies were called after the boy attacked his parents with a baseball bat when they confronted him about drinking.

The Associated Press generally does not name juveniles charged with crimes
