Huskers Fall Short in Big Ten Title Game

The 24th-ranked Nebraska women’s basketball team once again needed multiple extra sessions to decide a contest against Purdue, but this time around, it was the Boilermakers who came away with the victory, and the Big Ten Tournament championship. Purdue defeated the Huskers 74-70 in double overtime in Indianapolis, avenging a triple-OT loss to the Big Red earlier in the regular season. The Huskers trailed by eight late in the second half but rallied to tie the game at 56 and force the first OT. Nebraska had two chances to win the game in the first extra period but missed both shots, and then were outscored 10-6 in the second OT. Jordan Hooper led the Huskers with 25 points and 10 rebounds. She and Lindsey Moore were selected to the All-Tournament Team. The Huskers record drops to 24-8 with the loss.

Huskers Pummel Minnesota, Finish 2-1 at Dairy Queen Classic

The Nebraska baseball team finished up a 2-1 weekend at the Dairy Queen Classic in Minneapolis with a 10-3 victory over hosts Minnesota yesterday afternoon. The Huskers jumped out to a 7-0 lead after four innings, and added three insurance runs in the ninth inning to ice the victory. Tom Lemke earned the win on the mound, pitching five innings and allowing only one run. The win ensured a winning road trip for the Big Red after they split their first two games. On Friday the Huskers fell to West Virgina 4-1, but they rebounded in dramatic fashion on Saturday, as Rich Sanguinetti’s two-run walk-off homer capped a four-run ninth and gave the Huskers a 6-4 win over New Mexico State. The Huskers are now 6-4 on the year. Their home opener is Tuesday night against Kansas State.

Storm Snap Short Losing Skid, Win at Omaha

The Tri-City Storm wrapped up a tough weekend on a high note yesterday, defeating the Omaha Lancers 4-3 at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. After losing at home to Omaha on Friday and Cedar Rapids on Saturday, the Storm salvaged two points from the weekend thanks to three second-period goals. After Michael Vecchione’s first period tally, Nick Lappin, Tim Bonner and Kenny Brooks each lit the lamp to give the Storm a 4-2 lead after two. Though the Lancers found the net in the first minute of the third period, the Storm defense made the one-goal lead stand up, thanks to Adam Wilcox’s 25 saves. With the win, the Storm pass Sioux City for sixth place in the USHL’s Western Conference. Their lone game this weekend sees them return to the Civic Auditorium for a rematch with the Lancers on Friday night.

Bartley man ruled competent for McCook teen murder trial

Stathis Kirkpatrick

McCOOK, Neb. (AP) – A 19-year-old Bartley man has been ruled competent to stand trial for murder.
Stathis Kirkpatrick is accused of killing 14-year-old Kailee Clapp. The teen’s burned body was found the evening of Jan. 21, 2011, in a Bartley cemetery. She had been reported missing that morning from her McCook home.
Kirkpatrick has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and three other felony charges.
In September, Red Willow County District Judge David Urbom ruled Kirkpatrick wasn’t mentally competent and committed Kirkpatrick for treatment at the state psychiatric hospital in Lincoln.
In court documents, Urbom now says that after reviewing a letter from a psychiatrist and psychologist who treated Kirkpatrick at the hospital, the court has determined that Kirkpatrick is competent to stand trial.
A trial date has not been set.

Scottsbluff murder defendant claims self-defense

Daniel Morgan

GERING, Neb. (AP) – The attorney for a 27-year-old murder suspect says his client was acting in self-defense when he killed the father of his girlfriend’s child in Scottsbluff last year.
The defense and prosecution attorneys made opening statements Monday at the trial of Daniel Morgan, of Scottsbluff. He is charged with murdering 33-year-old Dominic Marquez on May 13.
Morgan’s attorney, Jerry Soucie, told the court that Morgan had gone to Marquez’s home to say he was going to stop dating the woman.
But, Soucie said, Marquez was in his vehicle and drove it at Morgan. Soucie says Morgan fired at the vehicle in self-defense.
Prosecutor Doug Warner says it wasn’t self-defense. He says Morgan acted with premeditation and deliberation in killing Marquez.
The first witness is expected to testify on Tuesday.

Look at me!!! Kerrey reconsidering?

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – A former campaign manager says former Nebraska U.S. Sen. Bob Kerrey could decide as early as Wednesday whether he’ll run for the job again.
Paul Johnson says the popular two-term senator and former governor called him Monday and said he was taking another look at the open seat. Just weeks ago, Kerrey signaled he wouldn’t seek a comeback.
Should Kerrey decide to get in this time, it could instantly revive a Senate race Democrats and Republicans alike seemed ready to declare dead.
Democratic U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson is retiring, and Democrats badly need to hold the seat because Republicans need to net just four seats to take back the chamber.

Nebraska woman guilty of beating husband to death

Susan DeJong

FAIRBURY, Neb. (AP) – A Jefferson County jury has found a Fairbury woman guilty of beating her husband to death.
55-year-old Susan DeJong was found guilty Monday of first-degree murder and use of a weapon to commit a felony in the death of 52-year-old Thomas DeJong at their home west of Fairbury in March 2011.
The prosecutor had told jurors last week that Susan DeJong became obsessed with suspicions that her husband was having an affair. Defense attorney James Mowbray had argued the evidence didn’t mean proof of the charges against her.
Both attorneys declined to comment after the verdict was read Monday afternoon. The judge in the case set sentencing for May 3.
