OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – A Nebraska inmate has been charged in a federal indictment with threatening President Barack Obama.
The indictment announced Thursday says 20-year-old Loren James Hamlin has been charged with making threats against the president.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Omaha says Hamlin sent a letter from prison on Sept. 29 saying he would “track down” and kill the president.
The indictment does not say to whom the letter was sent, and a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office said he could not give any details beyond what is in the indictment.
Online prison records show Hamlin began his 3-to-5 year sentence for burglary on Jan. 10 and is expected to be released on Sept. 1, 2013.

No, I want to drive!

Edward Leza

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (North Platte Post)– An argument over who should drive the company truck led to one local man being treated at a hospital and the other going to jail.
According to Lt. Rich Hoaglund of the North Platte Police Department, 57 year old Edward Leza and a coworker had gotten into an argument over who was going to drive their work vehicle. The two men decided to settle their differences physically on the I-80 exit ramp near North Platte. Leza allegedly decided that a box cutter would help even the odds.
According to Lt. Hoaglund, the injured man did not know he had been cut until after the fight ended. He drove home and his wife took him to the hospital for treatment. His wounds were not life-threatening.
Leza was arrested on 2nd degree assault charges and use of a weapon to commit a felony.
He remains in the Lincoln County Jail. No bond has been set.

Neb. oil pipeline bill inches closer to law

Sen. Annette Dubas

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – A proposal to regulate major oil pipelines in Nebraska has advanced one step closer to law.
Nebraska lawmakers voted the measure through the second of three required approvals Thursday in response to public anger over the Keystone XL. The crude oil project would have cut through the Nebraska Sandhills, but pipeline developer TransCanada agreed this week to change the route.
Members of Bold Nebraska, a key pipeline opponent, say they’re still concerned because lawmakers have not passed a measure that specifically protects the loose-soil Sandhills. The Sandhills sit atop a major groundwater supply.
The proposal (LB1) by Sen. Annette Dubas of Fullerton requires pipeline developers to seek approval from the Nebraska Public Service Commission before they proceed.
The bill was introduced during the special session called by Gov. Dave Heineman.

State tells lawyer: No 420 for you…

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – A southwestern Nebraska attorney and advocate for legalizing marijuana is suing the state Department of Motor Vehicles after he was denied a personalized license plate that state officials say would promote illegal drug use.
The Nebraska chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union filed the federal lawsuit Thursday on behalf of Frank Shoemaker, of Holbrook, saying the state violated Shoemaker’s constitutionally protected right to free speech.
The lawsuit says Shoemaker had applied earlier this year for a state license plate that read “NE420.” The term “420” is insider shorthand for cannabis consumption.
The motor vehicle agency rejected Shoemaker’s application, saying the number 420 is “associated with a date and time for people to gather and smoke marijuana/cannabis.”
The lawsuit seeks to have the department’s rejection declared unconstitutional.
