SD gov avoiding premature legislation

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard says legislation next year to ensure the state is protected from harm by a proposed oil pipeline from Canada to the U.S. Gulf Coast would be premature.
Federal regulators are extending their review of the Keystone XL Pipeline by more than a year to consider other routes, and TransCanada this week said it will make changes in the route to avoid environmentally sensitive areas in Nebraska.
Daugaard supports the pipeline along with ensuring protections for South Dakota. But he says that specific legislation during the 2012 session would be premature.
State Rep. Don Kopp unsuccessfully pushed legislation last session to require a $30 million cleanup bond from TransCanada in case of environmental damage. He says he’ll likely introduce it again.

Quake shakes up NW Nebraska

CHADRON, Neb. (AP) – A small earthquake shook areas of northwest Nebraska and southwest South Dakota but no damage was reported.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the 3.7 magnitude quake happened a little before midnight Sunday along the Nebraska-South Dakota border near Ardmore, S.D.
Eagle Communications station KQSK reported that residents in Ardmore, Chadron and Crawford could feel the shaking. The radio station says one woman in Crawford reported hearing her windows rattle and feeling her bed shake. The woman says the quake lasted about 20 seconds.
Geophysicist Don Blakeman of the National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo., says a 3.7 magnitude quake is large enough to be felt but not big enough to cause any serious damage.

NE passes; ND says: Give us the pipe!

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Sen. John Hoeven says he has talked to TransCanada Corp. officials about rerouting the Keystone XL pipeline through the state.
The U.S. government last week delayed a decision on granting a permit for Keystone XL, principally because of concerns about the pipeline’s environmental impact, particularly in Nebraska.
TransCanada announced Monday it will make changes in the Nebraska route.
TransCanada’s first Keystone pipeline, which delivers crude from Canada’s Alberta province to Illinois and Oklahoma, runs through eastern North Dakota.
Hoeven says he’s talked to TransCanada officials about the Keystone XL pipeline using that existing North Dakota route.
The disputed Keystone XL route runs from Alberta through Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska and Kansas, but does not traverse North Dakota.

(Update) Names Released in I-80 Triple Fatality

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (North Platte Post)- The names of three women killed in a single-vehicle rollover crash near Maxwell on Friday, Nov. 11, have been released.

Killed in the 2:00 p.m., crash were Claudia J. Cerda-Hernadez, 25, Albuquerque, NM, Romelia Pacheco, 32, Denver, CO and Viridiana Becomo, 23, Denver, CO.

The three women killed were unrestrained passengers in a 1998 Chrysler minivan. The minivan was eastbound on I-80 when the tread on the right rear tire separated, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The minivan entered the median and rolled numerous times before coming to a rest, partially blocking the westbound passing lane.

There were a total of eight females in the minivan, along with an infant male. Six of the females including the fatalities were all ejected from the vehicle. Restraints were in use by the driver and front seat passenger. The infant was also properly secured in a child restraint.

Cerda-Hernandez and Pacheco, died at the scene of the crash. Becomo, died from her injuries at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. The remaining six occupants were transported to Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte for treatment. Side-swiping Sides’ make plea deal

MCCOOK, Neb. (AP) – A father and son accused of causing a crash that injured four people in southwest Nebraska have made plea deals.
53-year-old Leslie Sides and his son, 26-year-old Eric Sides, earlier this week pleaded no contest to two felony counts and two misdemeanor counts of assault. In return, prosecutors dropped several charges.
Prosecutors say the Sides got into their trucks on Aug. 19, 2010, and chased a vehicle that had driven through the horseshoe driveway at their home in rural Bartley.
Prosecutors say the Sides drove up on either side of the other vehicle so Eric could run his truck into it. The vehicle was knocked into a spin and overturned.
Four people in it were injured, including one man who was paralyzed.

New trial date set for western Neb. murder suspect

Daniel Morgan

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) – A 26-year-old man charged in a fatal Scottsbluff shooting has lost an effort to suppress information in the case.
Daniel Morgan is charged with first-degree murder, accused of killing 33-year-old Dominic Marquez on May 13. Morgan has pleaded not guilty.
Judge Randy Lippstreu rejected Morgan’s request to suppress jail conversations and statements to Scottsbluff police that Morgan made after his arrest. Lippstreu also rejected Morgan’s contention that a Torrington, Wyo., police officer had no authority to arrest him.
Police say Morgan fled west to Wyoming after the shooting at Marquez’s home.
The judge granted a request to delay the Jan. 23 trial date.
Morgan’s trial now is scheduled to begin on Feb. 27.
