Town of Wymore looking for new police chief again

WYMORE, Neb. (AP) — The southeast Nebraska town of Wymore is looking for a new police chief.

Jay Welch resigned last week to take a job in a different department. Former Wymore Police Chief Mark Meints agreed to take the job in the interim.

Welch had been police chief for a little over three years.

Meints says he’s not interested in the job full time, but he is willing to help because he lives there.

At full strength, the department has a police chief and two officers, but one of the officer positions is also vacant.

Omaha police getting body cameras with new technology

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha police officers will soon be equipped with body cameras that will automatically be activated in certain situations.

The City Council on Tuesday will approve the purchase of 460 cameras, ensuring most officers have the technology.

The cameras have new features enabling them to automatically activate when an officers readies a stun gun, turns on a cruiser’s emergency lights or dashboard-mounted camera as well as when other nearby cameras are activated. The department will test a new feature that activates a camera when an officer draws a gun.

The Omaha Police Foundation will reimburse $1.4 million of the city’s cost for the cameras.

Besides paying for new cameras, the funding will pay for the automatic activation of 115 body cameras now in use.

Investigators say Nebraska man had shot wife before he died

PAPILLION, Neb. (AP) — Sarpy County Sheriff’s officials have revealed more information on an incident in an Omaha suburb that left a woman with a gunshot wound to her head and her husband dead.

Chief Deputy Greg London said Thursday in a written release that deputies sent to the Lakewood Villages housing addition on a welfare check Wednesday found 68-year-old Karl Langill dead in the home’s garage. His 67-year-old wife, Cheri Langill, was found wounded in the basement.

Investigators say Karl Langill shot his wife once in the head with a .22 caliber pistol during a domestic dispute nearly a week earlier, on Dec. 7. Cheri Langill is currently in stable condition at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

An autopsy indicates Karl Langill died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Popular Offutt Air Force Base air show to return in 2018

OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb. (AP) — After a year off, a hugely popular air show at Offutt Air Force Base south of Omaha is back on next summer.

A news release from the base says the Defenders of Freedom Open House and Air and Space Show is scheduled to return Aug. 10-12 and again June 1-2, 2019.

This year’s show, which had been set for July 1-2, was canceled. At the time, Col. Marty Reynolds, 55th Wing commander, cited increased demands for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions for the cancellation.

The 2018 show will be co-headlined by the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II demonstration teams.

Prosecutor turns stun gun death case over to Nebraska AG

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Douglas County prosecutor has announced he’s turning over the criminal cases against two former Omaha police officers charged in connection with the death of a mentally ill man to the Nebraska attorney general.

County Attorney Don Kleine made the announcement in a written statement Friday, citing that it was the state attorney general’s office that oversaw a grand jury process last month. That grand jury concluded that assault charges are warranted against the former officers in the June stun gun-related death of 29-year-old Zachary Bearheels.

Police video shows then-Officer Scotty Payne using a stun gun repeatedly on Bearheels, and then-Officer Ryan McClarty punching Bearheels outside an Omaha convenience store after Bearheels was on the ground.

Kleine said Friday that because the attorney general’s case saw the grand jury recommend the same charges Kleine had previously filed, it would be more efficient for the attorney general’s office to prosecute the cases.

Sarpy County files 2nd lawsuit after Gretna annexation

PAPILLION, Neb. (AP) — Sarpy County has filed a second lawsuit challenging an annexation by Gretna that doubles the city’s land area.

The county on Thursday filed the lawsuit, which claims the annexation is illegal because it includes agricultural land. That would violate a state law allowing cities to annex only suburban or urban land.

The suit also notes that if the annexation of agricultural land isn’t allowed, that would mean Gretna violated a requirement that annexed land by contiguous or adjacent to the incorporated boundaries.

The county dropped its initial lawsuit filed in October after Gretna introduced amendments to its annexation ordinance, but county officials found the changes didn’t meet their concerns.

The annexed land is home to at least 2,800 people and businesses.
