Prairie dogs blamed for phone outage in Nebraska

We did it!

OGALLALA, Neb. (AP) – Prairie dogs get the blame for an internet and phone outage in western Nebraska.

Officials with Charter Communications say prairie dogs apparently chewed through some buried fiber optic cable about two miles from Ogallala.

The problem was discovered Monday morning. Spokeswoman Heather Nessler told KNEB radio in Scottsbluff that there were hundreds of prairie dog mounds in the area, and it took time to find the cut and get it repaired. Service was rerouted and repairs were completed about seven hours later.

Nebraska 3-judge panel sentences man to life

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – A Mexican national convicted of killing a 3-year-old Nebraska girl has been sentenced to life in prison.
A three-judge panel convened Monday in Dakota County District Court. It handed down the sentence more than a year after Melecio Camacho-De Jesus was convicted of first-degree murder in the May 2009 death of Evelyn Verdugo Paniagua.
Prosecutors in the case had argued for the death penalty, noting
Camacho-De Jesus killed the girl during a sexual assault. The jury
found there were aggravating circumstances that warranted the death
penalty during the first phase of Camacho-De Jesus’ sentencing.
Prosecutors say Camacho-De Jesus broke into the preschooler’s
home, sodomized her, then killed her as her family slept.
Camacho-De Jesus had lived in the home until about two weeks before
the killing.

Norway Suspect Doesn’t Expect Release

The prosecutor in Norway’s twin terror attacks says the man accused of
them expects to spend the rest of his life in prison.
The maximum prison sentence in Norway is 21 years, but convicts
who pose a danger to society can be held after their sentence is
up.
Prosecutor Christian Hatlo said Anders Behring Breivik told
investigators during his interrogation that he never expected to be
released.
Breivik has confessed to bombing Oslo’s government headquarters
and opening fire on young people at an island retreat.
He has said in a written document that the killings were
“marketing” for his belief that Europe must be saved from Muslim
colonization.
Police lowered the death toll Monday to 76, from 93.

DeJong murder trial delayed

FAIRBURY, Neb. (AP) – Trial has been delayed for 54-year-old
Susan DeJong, a Jefferson County woman accused of
murdering her husband.
Prosecutors had asked for the continuance Thursday afternoon
because evidence is still being processed by a crime lab. Jefferson
County Attorney Linda Bauer says she’s concerned that the evidence
wouldn’t be returned to her office until too near the original
trial date of Aug. 29.
The new trial date is Sept. 19.
DeJong has pleaded not guilty in the beating death of
52-year-old Thomas DeJong, formerly of Alexandria, S.D.
Rescue squad members called to the DeJong residence west of
Fairbury on March 11 found Thomas DeJong, who was severely beaten
on the head, torso and limbs. He was pronounced dead later at a
Lincoln hospital.
