Police arrest suspects in Omaha dating app robberies

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Two people have been arrested in connection with a string of robberies of men in Omaha who thought they were meeting with a woman they had messaged on a dating application.

Omaha Police say one of the suspects was linked to the robberies after he sold stolen cellphones at a kiosk and used one of the victims’ credit cards.

The second suspect was arrested after a search warrant was served. Several items linked to the robberies, including two guns were found.

The suspects have both been charged in connection with seven robberies and one attempted robbery.

Court documents say all but one of the victims used the dating application called “Plenty of Fish.” But instead of a woman, they met robbers.

Ex-US Fish and Wildlife worker takes plea deal in theft case

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — A December sentencing is scheduled for a former U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service worker who’d been charged with burglarizing the service office in Wood River.

Court records say 59-year-old John Cochnar, of Grand Island, pleaded no contest Thursday to two counts of theft after prosecutors dropped two burglary counts. His sentencing is set for Dec. 8.

Authorities say he broke into the service’s field office at the Crane Trust Nature and Visitor Center on March 21 to steal property. Authorities also say he took $508 from the visitor center’s donation box.

Nebraska man accidentally shoots, kills wife in their home

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a man accidentally shot and killed his wife in the kitchen of their Sarpy County home while he was cleaning his pistol.

The Sarpy County sheriff’s office says 68-year-old Afton Teague was shot in the head around 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Authorities who arrived at the scene found her on the kitchen floor. She was taken to Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy, where she died.

Sarpy County Sheriff Chief Deputy Greg London says Teague’s husband had been firing the .22-caliber semi-automatic pistol that killed his wife at a gun range earlier in the day.

Lincoln man killed in eastern Nebraska highway crash

DAVID CITY, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a Lincoln motorcyclist has died in a crash with a semi in eastern Nebraska.

The Butler County sheriff’s office says 26-year-old Arez Karim was killed Thursday around 7:15 a.m. on U.S. Highway 81. Authorities say the semi driver, 30-year-old Jeremy Root of Hastings, was traveling south on the highway when his semi crossed the centerline and struck Karim’s northbound motorcycle.

The sheriff’s office says alcohol wasn’t a factor in the crash, but rainfall at the time likely was.

Sheriff’s offices in Butler and Polk County and the Nebraska State Patrol are investigating.

Woman involved in fatal crash charged with homicide, DUI

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities have charged a woman involved in a crash that killed a 15-year-old girl this week with felony motor vehicle homicide and drunken driving.

The crash Wednesday night on state Highway 50 in southern Sarpy County killed 15-year-old Alexandra Linscott, of Eagle, who was passenger in her mother’s car. Her mother, 48-year-old Elisa Linscott, was critically injured and is still hospitalized.

Investigators say 22-year-old Paige Seaton had been drinking when she crossed the center line, hitting the Linscotts’ car. Officials say Seaton’s blood alcohol level after the crash measured .180 percent — more than twice the legal driving limit.

Seaton remains hospitalized for injuries she sustained in the crash.

Court records show Seaton was on probation for another DUI when the crash occurred.

Omaha utility says water, gas rates likely to rise in 2018

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha-area utility says work to replace aging infrastructure will see natural gas and water bills in the area rise again next year.

Metropolitan Utilities District is planning increases similar to those approved for 2017.

The board in December approved a 2017 budget that included a 2.5 percent increase in water rates and a 1 percent increase in gas rates. This week, MUD President Scott Keep said management is using those same increases in early work for next year’s budget.

Taken together, this year’s rate increases worked out to monthly increases of about $1.80 for average water and gas users, with anticipated additional revenues of about $7.1 million. Gas rates had held steady for three years before the increase for 2017.

Omaha woman accused of severely injuring infant son

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A 31-year-old Omaha woman has been charged with first-degree child abuse, accused of severely injuring her 5-month-old baby.

Natasha Wolf was ordered held on $250,000 bail Friday.

Police say Wolf told officers that the baby was injured Wednesday when she stepped away for a moment and he rolled off a changing table and landed face-first onto a baby bottle.

But a doctor at Children’s Hospital and Medical Center in Omaha told police the child’s injuries weren’t consistent with that account.

The boy suffered bruising to his head and face and bleeding on the brain. A prosecutor said the baby remained in critical condition Friday at Children’s after undergoing a blood transfusion.

Wolf is scheduled to appear in court again on Nov. 14.

Judge names special prosecutor in stun gun-related death

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A state criminal prosecutor will lead a grand jury investigation into Omaha police officers’ actions in the stun gun-related death of a mentally ill man.

Corey O’Brien, head of the criminal division of the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office, will lead the grand jury investigation into the June 5 death of 29-year-old Zachary Bearheels.

Last month, a judge ruled that Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine could not lead the investigation, citing Kleine’s announcement in July of charges against former officers Scotty Payne and Ryan McClarty separate from the grand jury process.

Police video shows Payne using a stun gun repeatedly on Bearheels, and McClarty is seen punching Bearheels. Some of the blows came after Bearheels was on the ground and not resisting.

Payne has been charged with felony assault. McClarty is charged with misdemeanor assault.

Nebraska law requires a grand jury probe when someone dies in police custody.

Person crossing Omaha street hit by truck, dies at hospital

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Police say a person crossing a midtown Omaha street in a crosswalk has died after being hit by a pickup truck.

Omaha police say the crash happened late Tuesday night, when 50-year-old Aait Subba was struck by a pickup while walking across Cuming Street at the 40th Street intersection. Police say Subba was taken by medics to an Omaha hospital and later died.

Police say the 35-year-old driver from Bennington was not believed to have been speeding when he hit Subba. The crash remains under investigation.

Subba was the second pedestrian to be hit and killed in as many days in central Omaha. On Monday, 34-year-old Anh Tuan Phan was killed by a hit-and-run driver. No arrests in that case have been announced.

Police: Escaped inmate who may have rammed cruiser arrested

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Police have arrested an escaped inmate accused ramming a police cruiser last month.

Police say 30-year-old Nicholas Hupp was arrested Tuesday in southwestern Omaha and found with a handgun and methamphetamine.

Police say Hupp failed to return to the Douglas County jail in Omaha on Sept. 13 after being out on work release.

Investigators believe Hupp was behind the wheel of a stolen car the next day that collided with a police cruiser. When Officer Jordan Smith went to get out of his cruiser after the crash, the other car rammed his driver’s side, injuring Smith’s legs. Police say Smith then fired three shots into the car, which sped off.

Also arrested Tuesday was a 27-year-old woman whom police say sheltered Hupp while he was on the run.
