Colorado family of 4 ID’d as victims of fatal plane crash

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — A Colorado family of four has been identified as the victims of a fatal small airplane crash.

Relatives on Sunday said in a statement that 47-year-old Jeff Makepeace, his 45-year-old wife, Jennifer, and their twin 10-year-old children, Addison and Benjamin, died in the crash late Friday.

The family from the city of Fort Collins was flying from a Fort Collins-area airport to Moab, Utah, when their single-engine plane crashed about in mountainous terrain near Glenwood Springs, Colorado about 170 miles (275 kilometers) west of Denver.

Federal authorities are investigating the cause of the crash of the Cirrus SR22. It’s a single-engine plane that can seat up to five passengers.

The statement says details of funeral services for the family are pending.

Ex-city attorney pleads not guilty in Omaha to drug charge

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A former assistant city attorney in Council Bluffs, Iowa, has pleaded not guilty to a federal drug charge in Omaha.

Online court records say Don Bauermeister, of Omaha, entered the plea Wednesday to conspiracy to distribute marijuana. No trial date has been set.

The allegation covers a period from November 2016 to Jan. 9, 2017. Bauermeister faces up to five years in prison if convicted.

Bauermeister had been a city employee since February 2003. He resigned in mid-June.

Suspect arrested in shooting death of Hastings man

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities have arrested a suspect in the shooting death of a Hastings man.

Police say 19-year-old Deante Mullen was spotted late Monday near a convenience store in Lincoln and arrested after he tried to run to his car. Police say a stolen handgun was found in the front seat. Mullen was arrested on several Lancaster County warrants. His attorney declined to comment.

It’s unclear what charge — if any — Mullen might face in Adams County, where Hastings police say he’s suspected in the killing of 19-year-old Jose Hansen, whose body was found in an alley early Monday morning. The Adams County attorney didn’t immediately return a call Thursday from The Associated Press.

Omaha police say officer fired at car after being rammed

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha police say they’re looking for a driver who rammed a police cruiser, injuring an officer who fired several shots at the car.

Police say the incident began shortly after 2:30 a.m. Thursday when a car collided with the police car. Investigators say that when Officer Jordan Smith went to get out of his cruiser after the crash, the other car rammed his driver’s side, injuring the officer’s legs. Police say Smith then fired three shots into the car, which sped off.

Police later found the car, which had been stolen, abandoned several blocks away. The driver has not been found, and no evidence was found indicating the driver was shot.

Smith was taken to a hospital, treated for his injuries and released.

Suburban Omaha woman says coyote snatched family’s puppy

GRETNA, Neb. (AP) — A woman has told authorities that a coyote snatched a 4-month-old puppy from the front yard of her suburban Omaha home.

Kari Olson said she hasn’t seen little Oreo since last week. She says the coyote raced into the yard and grabbed the Sheltie after Olson had accompanied the pup outside one night.

In July a coyote snatched a family’s Yorkie from the yard of an acreage west of Lincoln.

Olson says she heard yelps from the puppy as the coyote ran through a nearby lot and into a ravine. A Sarpy County sheriff’s deputy helped the Olson family search, but they found no sign of Oreo.

The family home sits about 3 miles (5 kilometers) north of Gretna, near the Douglas County line.

Omaha man sentenced to federal prison for having child porn

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha man has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for possessing child pornography.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Omaha says 59-year-old Rodney Hiner was sentenced Tuesday in Omaha’s federal court.

Hiner was arrested last year after Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies and FBI agents searched his home in July 2016.

Investigators say Hiner’s cellphone contained more than 125 images of child pornography, many of which depicted toddlers and preschool children engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

Hiner will be supervised for five years following his release from prison and must register as a sex offender.

Officials say woman died after car-garbage truck collision

KENNARD, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say an 81-year-old car driver has died after a collision with a garbage truck in eastern Nebraska.

The crash occurred around 12:45 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. Highway 75, about 2½ miles (4 kilometers) east of Kennard. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says the woman driving north when her car crossed into oncoming traffic and hit the truck.

The office says the woman died after being taken to an Omaha hospital. Her name hasn’t been released. The Sheriff’s Office says she lived in Fort Calhoun.

The Sheriff’s Office also says the truck driver wasn’t injured. He’s been identified as 61-year-old Joseph Bauersachs, of Omaha.

Man pleads no contest in strippers-to-neighbor case

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Elkhorn man accused of sending prostitutes to strip on his neighbor’s front porch over a three-year period has pleaded no contest to pandering.

45-year-old Douglas Goldsberry entered the plea Tuesday in Douglas County court. He faces up to four years in prison when he is sentenced in November.

In exchange for the plea, prosecutors dropped a second charge of soliciting prostitution.

Authorities say Goldsberry hired prostitutes to bare their breasts and strip on his neighbor’s porch while he watched from his house across the street.

The family with two small children reported that women had shown up as many as 75 times since 2013, exposing themselves and sometimes kicking the door and yelling for payment.

Man charged in death of wife outside Nebraska police station

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (AP) — A man whom police say fatally shot his wife outside a northeast Nebraska police station is being held on $1.25 million bail.

The Dakota County Attorney’s office says it filed documents Monday charging 41-year-old Bei Sheng Chen, of South Sioux City, with first-degree murder, domestic assault and use of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony.

His first court appearance has been set for Sept. 19.

Police say Bei Sheng Chen shot 33-year-old Mei Huang on Sept. 6 in the parking lot of the South Sioux City police station. She died hours later at a Sioux City, Iowa, hospital.

His attorney, Todd Lancaster with the Nebraska Commission on Public Advocacy, declined to comment Tuesday.

Omaha police say man died when pickup struck utility pole

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Police say a man died after his pickup truck struck a utility pole in Omaha.

The accident was reported around 10:45 p.m. Saturday. Police say the pickup ran off a roadway before ramming the metal pole.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Police identified him as 22-year-old Chase Kruse, who lived in the Elkhorn area on the west side of Omaha.
