Escaped inmate faces kidnapping, fleeing charges in Nebraska

Jail-Bars-and-Cuffs_mediumOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An inmate accused of killing a sheriff’s deputy and injuring another during his western Iowa jail escape faces a hearing in Nebraska, where he was captured.

Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine says Wesley Correa-Carmenaty will appear in an Omaha court Wednesday to face charges of kidnapping, fleeing to avoid arrest, and two weapons counts.

Kleine said Tuesday that he will drop those charges if Correa-Carmenaty agrees to be extradited to Iowa to face more serious charges, including murder in the shooting death of Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Deputy Mark Burbridge.

Iowa authorities say Correa-Carmenaty shot Burbridge and Deputy Pat Morgan on Monday, then stole a van to break out of Pottawattamie County Jail. Police say he stole another vehicle and kidnapped the driver before driving to Omaha, where he was apprehended.

Iowa sheriff’s deputy dies after jail escape

police-lights-redThe inmate who escaped from a western Iowa jail Monday managed to steal a sheriff’s deputy’s gun as he was returning from a court appearance and shot two deputies. One deputy died later.

Pottawattamie County Sheriff Jeff Danker says 23-year-old Wesley Williams Correa-Carmenaty attacked and shot the two deputies who were driving inmates back from court Monday.

Correa-Carmenaty then stole the jail transport van and drove it out through a garage door.

Danker says Correa-Carmenaty tried unsuccessfully to steal a pickup truck just outside the jail and shot the driver. Then he continued on in the van several blocks before crashing the van and carjacking a car.

Then he drove to Omaha where he was arrested after a short pursuit.

Before the escape, Correa-Carmenaty was sentenced Monday to 45 years in prison for his role in a botched robbery in March 2016. He had pleaded guilty in January to voluntary manslaughter, attempted murder and two counts of robbery in connection with the slaying of 22-year-old Anthony Walker.

odd-newsBRICK TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — Twin sisters in New Jersey have delivered babies on the same day.

32-year-old fraternal twins Danielle Grant and Kim Abraham gave birth to baby boys on Friday. The sisters decided to have labor induced after their identical due dates of April 22 passed.

Grant and Abraham delivered their sons, Roman and Aaron, a little less than four hours apart.

The Toms River natives say their pregnancies were coincidences. Picking an induction date was the only thing that was consciously chosen.

Grant and Abraham say they’re very close and their husbands have become close as well so their sons will be like brothers.

The sisters plan to hold joint birthday parties for their sons and dress them in matching outfits.
