Nebraska woman accused of stabbing brother takes plea deal

stabbingCOLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — A Columbus woman accused of stabbing her brother is scheduled to be sentenced Friday.

Online court records show 21-year-old Alicia Martinez has taken a plea deal and pleaded no contest to attempted assault. Prosecutors dropped a charge of attempted murder and weapons, drugs and traffic charges in exchange for her plea.

The court records say prosecutors will recommend Martinez be sentenced to no more than 364 days in jail. The records also say the judge is not bound by the recommendation.

Court documents say Rogelio Barrios told officers that when he awoke in his bedroom during the stabbing July 11, he found his sister standing by his bed, holding an 8-inch boning knife. The documents say he was stabbed six times, suffering wounds in his chest, arms and a hand.

Amazon plans to hire 100,000 over the next 18 months

amazonNEW YORK (AP) — Amazon plans to hire 100,000 people across the U.S. over the next 18 months.

The Seattle company says the new jobs will be filled by people of differing experiences and education levels.

Even after 125 votes, Omaha board members can’t pick president

omaha-psOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha school board members are scheduled to meet again Jan. 23 to break a deadlock on who shall lead them as board president.

The matter was tabled for two weeks, until the next scheduled meeting.

Board member Lacey Merica said she was hopeful the board can reach a resolution then and not have it take 120 more ballots.

Family of boy killed on Kansas waterslide settles with park

Schlitterbahn-Water-ParkKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The family of a Kansas lawmaker’s 10-year-old son killed last summer on what was billed as the world’s tallest water slide has reached a settlement with the park’s owner.

Terms of the deal filed Wednesday in Kansas’ Johnson County District Court involving Caleb Schwab’s family were not immediately released.

A spokeswoman for Schlitterbahn Waterparks and Resorts, Winter Prosapio, confirmed the settlement, which was first reported by The Kansas City Star. She declined to elaborate, other than to say the park’s owners plan to follow through on demolishing the slide as announced in November.

An attorney for two women injured with Schwab during the ill-fated ride last Aug. 7 says Wednesday’s action does not resolve any potential liabilities against the park by his clients.

No charges have been filed.

City of Omaha settles harassment lawsuit for $175,000

lawsuit-settlementOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A former city of Omaha employee who filed a federal lawsuit alleging sexual harassment and other wrongdoing in the Omaha Public Works Department will receive a $175,000 settlement.

The Omaha City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to settle a lawsuit brought by Traci Shelby for $100,000, plus $75,000 in attorney’s fees.

The lawsuit said a co-worker repeatedly made sexually explicit comments toward Shelby, and a supervisor showed her a pornographic video. The lawsuit said that when she applied for a full-time job, other employees were given a copy of the civil service exam and answers ahead of the test.

City officials say the testing process has been changed to deter cheating and that employees involved in the allegations were disciplined and demoted.
