elkhorn-riverOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Officials say all Elkhorn River access parks in eastern Nebraska have reopened.

The parks have been closed due to high water in the river, causing potentially hazardous boating conditions.

The Papio-Missouri River Natural Resource District says in a news release that reopened access sites include Elkhorn Crossing near 252nd Street and Bennington Road; Graske Crossing, off West Dodge Road; and the West Maple Road site.

Recreationists are reminded that Coast Guard-approved personal floatation devices must be worn or present on all boats in the river. That includes canoes, kayaks and even inflatable inner tubes.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has upheld the conviction of a Lincoln man sentenced to up to 50 years for a fatal home invasion.

Joshua Carr was sentenced in September to 33 to 50 years in prison after pleading no contest to manslaughter, attempted robbery and a weapons charge in the 2014 shooting death of 21-year-old Maurice Williams.

Carr had sought to withdraw his no contest plea based on new evidence, but a Lancaster County District Court judge denied his motion.

Carr appealed, and on Friday, the state’s high court upheld the trial court’s decision to not allow Carr to withdraw his plea. The high court found that the lower court did not abuse its discretion in determining that Carr failed to show the new evidence would likely clear him.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Prosecutors will seek the death penalty for a man charged in the December shooting deaths of a woman and her 2-year-old daughter.

24-year-old Dontevous Loyd appeared in court Thursday and was formally arraigned on the enhanced first-degree murder charges. Prosecutors say they also will file witness tampering charges against Loyd, saying he threatened a witness from jail.

Police say later that night, Loyd kicked in Straughn’s apartment door and began shooting, killing 2-year-old Kenacia Straughn first, then her mother. OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Investor Warren Buffett has delivered his annual gifts of Berkshire Hathaway stock to five charities as part of his plan to gradually give away his fortune.

The gifts of Class B Berkshire stock that Buffett disclosed Thursday were worth roughly $2.86 billion. More than 19.6 million Berkshire shares were donated.

That’s slightly more than last year’s $2.8 billion donation even though fewer shares are involved because Berkshire’s stock price has increased.

Buffett has been giving away blocks of Berkshire stock since 2006 with the biggest share going to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

He also gave Class B Berkshire shares to his own foundation and to the foundations run by each of his three children.

Nebraska senator asks community college chairman to resign

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha has called on the board chairman of a community college in Omaha to resign.

Metro Community College could lose eligibility for millions of federal dollars if Fred Conley stays on the panel.

Last month, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development banned Conley from participating in federal contracts for three years because he failed to disclose a potential conflict of interest while serving on the Omaha Housing Authority board.

Conley has filed a federal lawsuit seeking to overturn the department’s action.

The Department of Education’s Federal Student Aid Office told the community college last month that the school must remove any leader who is prohibited from participating in federal contracts in order to maintain its eligibility to receive federal student aid program funds.
