OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The National Weather Service says it’s confirmed that a second, weaker tornado touched down briefly in northwest Omaha.

The service said in a web posting Friday the EF0 twister alighted at 3:49 p.m. Wednesday onto a pond and lifted within a minute. An EF0 tornado carries winds from 65 to 85 mph. No damage or injuries have been reported.

The first tornado was rated an EF1, packing winds of 86 to 110 mph. The service says the tornado stayed on the ground for about eight blocks and seemed to bob up and down after it struck around 3:45 p.m. It toppled a few trees, damaged others and knocked down some fences before dissipating about four minutes later. No injuries have been reported.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Police say a Lincoln school bus has been involved in an accident with a sports utility vehicle.

The SUV driver lost control of her vehicle Thursday morning and hit the front of a Lincoln Public Schools bus carrying four students and two adults. Police say the collision happened on 14th street, near Cornhusker Highway in Lincoln.

Rescue workers had to remove the SUV’s driver-side door to remove the driver. She was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and ticketed for negligent driving.

No other injuries were reported and another bus picked up the students.

School officials say the bus was taking students to Beattie Elementary School.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has ruled that a transportation company which serves people with disabilities can expand its operations in Lincoln despite objections raised by taxi services.

The court on Thursday ruled that Golden Plains Services Transportation can proceed despite a number of consumer complaints. The ruling upholds an earlier decision by the Nebraska Public Service Commission.

Complaints against the firm include instances where a van arrived late and the customer missed a doctor or other medical appointment.

The company’s owner, Kirby Young, has said the complaints are few compared to the 48,000 trips it provided between Mary 2014 and March 2015.

The cab companies argued that the company isn’t fit to provide the service. They also argued the commission should have considered complaints against another company owned by Young.

FREMONT, Neb. (AP) — A staffer at a memory care facility in Fremont has been charged in connection with the death of a patient who was burned after he fell asleep next to a fireplace.

Fremont police say in a news release that 23-year-old Anne Pavlik, of Arlington, was arrested Tuesday on a warrant listing felony abuse of a vulnerable adult. Online court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could be contacted to comment for her.

A court document says Pavlik acknowledged that she didn’t check on the patient Feb. 13 after he nodded off too close to the fireplace at Edgewood Vista. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Police say an autopsy showed a combination of natural causes and the burns killed the man.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha man accused of stealing a gay pride rainbow flag and burning it has been found guilty.

24-year-old Cameron Mayfield was found guilty Wednesday of arson. Prosecutors said that the charge was prosecuted as a felony, not a misdemeanor, because the incident was investigated as a hate crime.

Mayfield was accused of taking the flag from the porch of a lesbian couple who lived near him, setting it on fire and waving it in the middle of the street in March 2015.

James Martin Davis, who is Mayfield’s attorney, argued the act was a drunken prank and not a hate crime. Mayfield had testified that he thought the flag was a spring ornament, not a gay pride flag, and that he had no idea that the his neighbors were gay.

Mayfield faces up to two years in prison.

Downpours accompanied the storms that developed Wednesday from the same system that brought rain Tuesday. The service has issued an alert for possible flooding along the Missouri River for Cass and Otoe counties. A flood warning was issued for Nemaha and Richardson counties.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Police say a child has been shot in north Omaha and taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Omaha police Lt. Matthew Lippold says a child who is thought to be 1-year-old was shot around 5 p.m. Wednesday and taken to the Nebraska Medical Center.

Police did not provide any additional details, saying it was still early in the investigation.

A person was seen being led by police in handcuffs shortly after 5 p.m.

The shooting happened on 34th Street, next door to the home where 71-year-old Merlin Prinz was killed Monday.

Officials have confirmed a tornado has briefly touched down in northwest Omaha.

National Weather Service meteorologist David Pearson says a tornado touched down several times Wednesday afternoon but only briefly. Officials continue to monitor the system as it remains in the area.

Pearson says no major damage has been reported in the suburban area, but there have been reports of flying debris.

SALINA, Kan. (AP) — One of two suspects in a Salina homicide has been arrested after a police pursuit.

Police Capt. Chris Trocheck says the chase began Tuesday morning after 21-year-old Adonis Loudermilk, of Lincoln, Nebraska, was found fatally shot in a Salina motel parking lot.

Trocheck says a passing train forced the suspect to turn around west of Salina. The truck then headed back into town, where the suspect hoped a curb and traveled about 200 yards in a railroad right-of-way. With two tires busted, the suspect and his passenger bailed and were arrested after a short foot chase.

The driver and a woman are jailed on suspicion of felony murder and robbery, and the passenger on suspicion of obstruction. The woman was taken from the homicide scene for questioning and later arrested.

DESHLER, Neb. (AP) — Heavy rainfall from a night of storms has caused flooding in two southern Nebraska cities, forced the evacuation of a nursing home and led officials to cancel some school classes.

Thayer County Emergency Manager Bill McPherson says Hebron and Deshler both saw minor flooding in streets, but no property damage was reported. Around 45 patients and residents from Parkview Haven Nursing Home and Meadowlark Heights Assisted Living in Deshler spent the night at Deshler High School because of flooding concerns but returned Wednesday morning.

Classes at Deshler Public Schools were canceled because of some road flooding.

National Weather Service meteorologist Jerilyn Billings Wright says a radar-estimated 6 to 8 inches fell Tuesday and overnight to the west of Deshler. Flooding forced closure of U.S. Highway 136, but it’s been reopened.
