OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A former English teacher convicted of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old Omaha student has been sentenced to prison.

A judge Wednesday sentenced 37-year-old Bryan Black to 32 to 60 years in prison.

Black pleaded no contest in January to attempted sexual assault of a child and visual depiction of sexually explicit conduct.

Prosecutors say Black began a relationship with a Millard North High School student in September 2014. The girl made her allegations in March 2015, a day before Black was arrested.

Black apologized in court Wednesday. His attorney asked for the minimum sentence of three years in prison, noting that Black was previously a military police officer who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — An autopsy shows a Lincoln man had a heart problem before a fire broke out at his home.

The body of 71-year-old Gary Tunnison was found on March 16 inside a garage that had been converted into a living space.

The Lancaster County attorney’s office says the cause of Tunnison’s death was consistent with heart disease and that Tunnison had a heart episode before the fire.

MACY, Neb. (AP) — The White House says the Obama administration has raised the federal share of public aid for the Omaha Tribe’s recovery from the 2011 Missouri River flooding.

A news release sent Wednesday says the level has been raised to 90 percent of the total eligible costs from 75 percent. It’s unclear why the aid was increased. A Federal Emergency Management Agency spokesman said he couldn’t immediately reply. A tribal representative didn’t immediately return a message.

Hundreds of thousands of acres of land were flooded along the Missouri River in Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri in 2011 after heavy spring rains and a giant mountain snowpack forced massive releases from upstream dams.

The Omaha Indian Reservation lies primarily in northeast Nebraska but extends across the Missouri River into Monona County, Iowa.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a 27-year-old man will be charged with vehicular homicide for the hit-and-run death of a pedestrian in west Omaha.

A news release from the Douglas County attorney’s office Wednesday says Orling Carrasco-Zelaya also will be charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident and third offense drunken driving. Online court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could speak for Carrasco-Zelaya.

The office says Carrasco-Zelaya also goes by the name of Edwin Elvir-Palma, but Carrasco-Zelaya is on his Honduran birth certificate. A police report says Carrasco-Zelaya has been a fugitive from U.S. immigration authorities since 2012.

Police say 34-year-old Margarito Nava-Luna was killed around 2:30 a.m. Saturday while walking in the westbound lane of street where there’s no sidewalks.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — The last of three defendants has been sentenced in the death of a Council Bluffs man.

On Tuesday 23-year-old Christopher King, of Lincoln, Nebraska, was given five years in prison. He’d pleaded guilty to theft after prosecutors lowered the charge.

Iowa authorities say King, Caine Petersen and Sarael Duncan robbed 20-year-old Jacob Combs of marijuana on Aug. 15 last year in Council Bluffs. Authorities say Combs jumped onto Petersen’s vehicle as the three men fled but then fell or was thrown, suffering head injuries. Combs died in a hospital later that day.

Petersen, of Council Bluffs, and Duncan, of Omaha, Nebraska, were given 10 years in prison after making their plea deals.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha man who police say killed an unintended victim has been given 40 to 50 years in prison.

23-year-old Kevin Mejia (meh-HEE’-uh) was sentenced Tuesday in Douglas County District Court. He’d pleaded guilty to manslaughter and a weapons charge after prosecutors lowered the original homicide charge from second-degree murder.

Prosecutors say Mejia and an accomplice, James Vega, went to an Omaha house in October 2014 because they were angry with someone over a drug deal. Mejia fired twice at the house, and police say the man who was struck by one of the bullets, 23-year-old Jose Fabila (FAH’-bee-luh), wasn’t the man Vega and Mejia were upset with.

Vega also was sentenced Tuesday. He was given three to four years as an accomplice.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A judge has denied a request to reinstate a Chicago attorney to help defend a former doctor accused of killing four people with ties to an Omaha medical school.

On Monday, Douglas County District Judge Gary Randall rejected a third request to reinstate Alison Motta to the defense team of Anthony Garcia.

The ruling comes after Randall earlier this month deemed that Motta will not be allowed to speak at trial or sit at the defense table, although she can still assist Garcia’s defense. The judge said Motta made public comments days before Garcia’s trial was to begin that violated ethical rules and could have swayed a jury.

The motion to reinstate Motta suggested her team was prepared to appeal the judge’s decision before the Nebraska Supreme Court.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — An ordinance that has been narrowly approved will allow police to interfere with drone operation in Lincoln.

The City Council voted 4-2 on Monday to approve the ordinance, which will allow Lincoln police to stop drone operators who are flying recklessly, outside of operators’ line of sight or without proper registration and markings.

Dissenting City Council members say the ordinance is a case of over-regulation because drones are already regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Councilwoman Jane Raybould says the local drone ordinance would give law enforcement the ability to interfere in unsafe situations.

The city’s Airport Authority had asked for a city ordinance to restrain drone activity during a major airshow scheduled in May.
