Nebraska Officials Seize Nearly 90 Pounds of Marijuana

lancaster-county-sheriffLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Law enforcement officials in southeast Nebraska say they’ve seized nearly 90 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop on Interstate 80 near Lincoln.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office says deputies pulled over a sport utility vehicle for a suspected traffic infraction Thursday afternoon. The office says the 34-year-old driver from Ithaca, New York, consented to a search of the SUV.

Deputies say they found two large bags and three pieces of luggage in the back of the SUV containing heat-sealed bags of marijuana, which had an estimated street value of $400,000.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of dealing marijuana.

Global Expert to Lead UNL’s Water for Food Institute

UNLLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — An internationally known expert on water, food and environmental research will serve as the next leader of the University of Nebraska’s Robert B. Daugherty Water for Food Institute.

Peter McCornick will begin his new role as the institute’s executive director on Sept. 1.

McCornick currently serves as deputy director general for research at the International Water Management Institute in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He will succeed Roberto Lenton, who became the Water for Food Institute’s founding executive director in 2012.

McCornick is among the feature speakers at the 2016 Water for Food Global Conference, set for April 24-26 at the Nebraska Innovation Campus in Lincoln.

He has led research and development programs on water, agriculture and the environment in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and the United States.

Omaha Police Investigate Shooting That Killed 2 Outside Club

crime-scene-police-shootOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Police have identified the two men killed in a shooting outside a motorcycle club in northeast Omaha.

The shooting happened shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday near the Zac Riders Club at 24th and Franklin Streets.

The responding officers found 47-year-old Allen McReynolds and 52-year-old Victor Beatty had both been shot.

The two men were taken to CHI Creighton University Medical Center in critical condition. Both men died at the hospital.

Police are still investigating and had not made any arrests as of Sunday morning.

Omaha Police Find Missing 5-Year-Old Boy Wedged Under Car Seat

omaha-policeOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha police say they have found a missing 5-year-old boy trapped under the seats of his parents’ sports car.

Police were called to an area southwest of downtown Omaha just after 11 p.m. Friday. The boy’s family told police they were eating at a restaurant when the boy said he was tired, and the parents let him sleep in the car.

Police say when the parents later returned to the car, they couldn’t find the boy and called authorities. Officers ordered trains in the area to stop running while they searched. About an hour later, the boy was found stuck underneath the car’s seats.

Police say the parents face child neglect charges.

Police: Pedestrian Killed by Hit-and-Run in West Omaha

car-pedestrian-accidentOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian in west Omaha.

Police say 34-year-old Margarito Nava-Luna was killed around 2:30 a.m. Saturday. Police say Nava-Luna was hit while walking in the westbound lane of Manderson Plaza, where there is no sidewalk.

Police say an initial investigation shows an eastbound vehicle crossed the center line of the road and hit Nava-Luna, who was declared dead at the scene by Omaha Fire Department medics.

Judge Dismisses Murder Charge Against Man with Dementia

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A judge has dismissed a second-degree murder charge against a 78-year-old Lincoln man with dementia who is accused of stabbing his son-in-law to death in 2014.

The Lancaster County Attorney’s office sought the dismissal of charges on Friday. It asked that Bayapa Lingala be committed to the state psychiatric hospital in Lincoln. A judge ruled last month that Lingala is mentally incompetent to stand trial and is not expected to be restored to competency.

Lingala likely will remain in the Lincoln Regional Center for the rest of his life.

Police say Lingala stabbed 46-year-old Sujay Nooka on Aug. 5, 2014, at a birthday party for Nooka’s 12-year-old daughter.

Woman to Stand Trial for Charge in Omaha Shooting Death

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A 26-year-old Omaha woman will stand trial in connection with the fatal shooting of a 22-year-old man in March.

A judge ordered trial Friday in the case against Secretia Benton, who is charged with being an accessory to a felony. She faces up to four years in prison if convicted.

Prosecutors say she had a role in the death of Jarrell Haynes, who was shot and killed outside his grandmother’s home on March 2.

Bernard Turner Jr. is still being sought by Omaha police after an arrest warrant was issued for him on March 30 charging him with first-degree murder, use of a firearm to commit a felony and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

Family of Woman Named in Nebraska Girl’s Death Gets Protection Order

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The family of a woman charged with the death of a 4-year-old girl has been issued an order protecting them from the dead child’s mother, who is accused of threating them.

The mother Chelsey Cook sought the protection order against Lakisha Morrow. Cook is charged with child abuse resulting in the death.

Morrow is the mother of 4-year-old Alicia Morrow, whose body was found in Cook’s unheated house in January. The two women had agreed that Cook would care for the girl.

In an affidavit for the protection order, Cook’s mother says Morrow angrily confronted her and another family member last month. The woman said Morrow yelled at her to call the police, because she wanted to go to jail and kill Cook.

8th-Grade Girl Charged with Stabbing Classmate with Scissors

philadelphia-policePHILADELPHIA (AP) — An eighth-grade girl has been charged with stabbing another eighth-grade girl with scissors at their Philadelphia elementary school.

A police spokesman said the 13-year-old girl was charged as a juvenile Wednesday with aggravated assault and related offenses.

District spokesman Fernando Gallard says the 14-year-old victim has been released from the hospital.

Gallard says the girls were fighting Wednesday morning in a hallway at the start of the school day when the 13-year-old grabbed the scissors and stabbed the 14-year-old in the upper chest and arm.

He says the victim is expected to return to school Monday and officials are meeting with her and her parents to develop a safety plan.

Gallard has said the two students “have a history.”

Woman Dies in Bellevue House Fire

fireBELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) — Police say a woman has died in a Bellevue house fire.

The woman died Friday in the fire, which drew multiple fire departments.

Firefighters had to cut a hole in the roof while battling the fire near 29th Avenue and Jefferson Street. Utility crews also responded to neighboring homes to turn off some services.

Authorities did not reveal the woman’s name, and the fire remains under investigation.
