OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha firefighters are training in body armor so they can help police with crime scenes when they’re needed to save lives.

Omaha’s fire and police departments have teamed up to form a “rescue task force” to simultaneously respond in the event of a mass shooting or another situation with multiple victims.

The training began in January and will continue through the end of March. Nearly every firefighter and police officer will complete the training, which goes toward their state-mandated continuing education requirements.

Forty firefighters and police officers went through four hours of physical training and classroom education Tuesday. Training included learning how to apply tourniquets to themselves and others, as well as practicing going into a volatile situation with protective vests and helmets.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A former doctor for the Nebraska football team has been given probation on convictions stemming from Lincoln crashes last summer when his 6-year-old child was in the back seat.

53-year-old Scott Strasburger was given a year of probation and fined $750 Tuesday. Strasburger had pleaded no contest and was convicted of driving under the influence of cocaine and leaving the scene of an accident. No one was injured.

Police say Strasburger collided with another vehicle and then crashed into a parked vehicle last June. The driver of the first vehicle told police she recognized Strasburger and suspected he was high on drugs.

Strasburger’s medical license was suspended in 2014 on allegations that he’d showed up impaired at a Lincoln surgical center.

BELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) — Officials have reopened Kennedy Freeway in Bellevue after investigating a fatal collision.

The accident occurred around 2:50 a.m. Wednesday, forcing closure of the freeway in both directions between Chandler and Cornhusker roads. Commute traffic was rerouted off the freeway, also known as U.S. Highway 75.

The Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office says a sport utility vehicle was spotted heading south in the northbound lanes before it collided with a northbound semitrailer. The SUV driver died. The driver hasn’t been identified, but authorities say the SUV had Iowa plates. The semi driver wasn’t injured.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln man has been sentenced to 300 days in jail for pushing headstones off of their bases at Wyuka Cemetery in 2014.

19-year-old Chase Dill was also ordered to pay $800 in restitution on Tuesday. He pleaded no contest to criminal mischief and attempted failure to appear.

Authorities say the cemetery’s superintendent called police on Sept. 5, 2014, after spotting a man pushing headstones off their bases. Police say the man had chipped the bottom of three headstones, broke one in half and pushed two concrete flower pots from their bases.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A man convicted in a 2008 gang-related shooting that killed two Omaha residents has been resentenced in the case.

Douglas County District Judge Peter Bataillon resentenced 23-year-old Juan Castaneda from life without parole to 105 to 125 years in prison Monday.

The resentencing follows a 2013 U.S. Supreme Court decision that says it’s unconstitutional for juveniles to receive mandatory life sentences without parole.

Castaneda was 15 when he was one of three teens involved in Tari Glinsmann and Luis Fernando Silva’s deaths.

Nebraska lawmakers set the sentencing range for juvenile killers at 40 years to life in prison after the Supreme Court decision. Castaneda was the 12th of the 27 Nebraska juveniles with life sentences to be resentenced.

Castaneda won’t be eligible for parole until he’s 67. Without parole, he won’t be released until he’s 77.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A special sales tax at a Lincoln shopping center will help the city finance a new 1,000-car, $20 million parking garage for customers expected to be drawn to a sporting goods store.

Retail stores at SouthPointe Pavilions will be able to pay the tax in several ways, including raising the price of goods, absorbing the extra 1 percent or collecting it directly from customers by adding to the sales receipt.

The tax will be labeled on receipts as “parking assessment” or “parking fee.”

Nebraska law allows cities to impose the special tax, called an occupation tax, in a limited geographic area. Everything in the shopping center will be taxed except restaurant food and beverages.

Scheels All Sports is scheduled to open a 220,000-square-foot flagship store, with a Ferris wheel, in November 2018.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A 43-year-old woman has been given jail time and told to make restitution for helping to steal cattle in Nebraska’s York County and selling them in southwestern Iowa.

Amy Springer, formerly of Omaha, Monday was sentenced to six months in jail and ordered to pay nearly $1,800 to a feedlot owner in York County. Court records say Springer pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting a felony after prosecutors reduced the charge from theft and dropped a burglary count.

Prosecutors say she and Ervin Jacob stole two steers from the feedlot and sold them at a sale barn in Massena, Iowa.

The 58-year-old Jacob has pleaded not guilty to theft and burglary charges. His trial is scheduled to begin April 19.

BOYS TOWN, Neb. (AP) — Douglas County authorities are investigating the death of an 18-year-old resident at Boys Town.

The Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday that the body of Larry McBryde, of Erwin, North Carolina, was found on the floor of his room around 7:15 a.m. Monday. He’d last been seen around 10:45 p.m. Sunday.

The Sheriff’s Office says investigators have found no signs of injury, struggle or other disruption in the room. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

Boys Town was founded as an Omaha orphanage in 1917 by the Rev. Edward Flanagan and now is situated in western Omaha, serving as a residential center for troubled youth. Spokeswoman Lauren Laferla says counselors and grief support will be available to the youths and staffers on campus.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A 32-year-old man has been imprisoned for stabbing to death another Lincoln resident at Peter Pan Park in the capital city.

Court records say LaRon Branch was sentenced Monday to 18 to 20 years in prison and given credit for 737 days already served.

Branch had pleaded no contest and was convicted of manslaughter after prosecutors lowered the charge from second-degree murder and dropped a weapons count. Prosecutors say Branch stabbed 27-year-old Lincoln Jarvis Long, whose body was found in the park on Jan. 16, 2014.
