WASHINGTON (AP) — The Government Accountability Office says the Justice Department needs to better document how it’s tracking the effect of marijuana legalization in the states.

In a report Monday, investigators noted that the DOJ said in 2013 it would allow states to regulate marijuana for medical or recreational use, as long as they meet federal law enforcement priorities that include keeping pot away from children and keeping criminal organizations out of the industry.

But, the GAO said, the government isn’t documenting how it is making sure states meet those priorities. The report recommends that the Justice Department start doing so, which will put it in better position to identify states that aren’t meeting federal pot enforcement priorities.

The DOJ said it agrees with the recommendations.

Four states — Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska — and the District of Columbia have legalized recreational pot use.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A judge has terminated the parental rights of a Lincoln man who’d been charged with negligent child abuse after his daughter was scalded in bath water.

In August a jury found 21-year-old Reid Alden not guilty. Alden has said he filled up the baby tub like usual on April 16, 2014, and gave his daughter, Raelynn, a bath for the first time without his wife. But Raelynn’s delicate skin turned bright pink and started sloughing off when he took her out.

Judge Toni Thorson was able to consider evidence the jury could not at Alden’s trial. Thorson wrote in a Jan. 15 order that Alden presented an unacceptable risk of harm to the girl and so terminated Alden’s parental rights.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Three Council Bluffs women have been arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and pistol-whipping a Nebraska woman at an area hotel.

Authorities 25-year-old Jennifer Trotter, 41-year-old Kimberly Trotter and 23-year-old Tyrell Jones were arrested Friday.

Police say Jennifer Trotter accosted the 21-year-old victim from Bellevue, Nebraska, outside the victim’s hotel room late Thursday night, brandishing a handgun. Police say all three suspects then forced the victim into her room, forced her to undress and lie on the bathroom floor while Kimberly Trotter, who is Jennifer Trotter’s mother, beat the victim in the face with the gun.

Police say the victim and suspects were acquainted.

All three suspects remained in jail Saturday and could not be reached for comment.

POLK, Neb. (AP) — Health officials are taking precautions after an eastern Nebraska teen died from an apparent case of meningitis.

Anyone who had close contact with the teen beforehand will be giving antibiotics as a precaution, but officials are not yet sure what type of meningitis the student had.

The teen was a student at High Plains Community Schools in Polk, Nebraska, before dying on Thursday. The student, who was a sophomore, wasn’t identified by officials.

School officials say the Central District Health Department isn’t treating this as a meningitis outbreak at this time.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lincoln Police are investigating a shooting outside an apartment building that killed a 25-year-old man.

Police say the shooting was reported around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Officers found Joshua Hartwig fatally wounded when they arrived at the apartments about three miles north of downtown Lincoln.

Officers determined that there was an argument between a man and a woman about 30 minutes before the shooting, and the man left the area after the disagreement.

The shooting happened when a group of people was standing outside the apartment building.

Police Capt. Danny Reitan says bullets struck Hartwig and several vehicles in the area. Reitan says Hartwig, who lived in the apartments, wasn’t part of the earlier disturbance.

Reitan says a suspect was in custody on an unrelated charge Sunday.

WAHOO, Neb. (AP) — A Saunders County correctional officer has died of injuries he sustained in a crash near Wahoo last weekend.

The Saunders County Sheriff’s Office says 32-year-old Tanner Hauck died around 8 p.m. Friday at a Lincoln hospital.

Hauck had been a passenger in a car driven by his fiance, 29-year-old Jessica Thomas, when it collided with a pickup the morning of Jan. 24 just west of Wahoo at Highway 92 and U.S. 77. Thomas was killed in the crash.

The driver of the pickup received only minor injuries.

Authorities are investigating the crash.

PIERCE, Neb. (AP) — A Norfolk woman has died following a crash near Pierce in northeastern Nebraska.

Pierce County Attorney Verlyn Luebbe said 70-year-old Faythe Ann Jaroska of Norfolk died shortly before 1 p.m. Friday when her car collided with a semitrailer.

Luebbe says Jaroska was pulling out of business parking lot onto southbound U.S. Highway 81 when her car was hit by the northbound truck, driven by a 33-year-old LeMars, Iowa, man.

Luebbe says Jaroska was the lone occupant of the car and died instantly. The truck driver did not sustain any serious injuries.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha police say a man fatally shot by officers this week was acting erratically, had yelled he would not return to prison and had pointed a gun at officers before he was shot.

A police account of the Thursday night encounter says 33-year-old William Adams repeatedly told officers to shoot him and put the barrel of a loaded handgun in his mouth, under his chin and to his head. Police say he was shot when he removed the gun from his mouth and lowered it in the direction of officers.

Police say Adams had barricaded himself inside an apartment late Thursday afternoon, when a vehicle he was suspected of stealing was spotted in south-central Omaha. The shooting occurred about 2 ½ hours later.

DENVER (AP) —Denver’s police chief says one person was fatally shot and seven others were wounded when a fight broke out a motorcycle expo on Saturday.

Police Chief Robert White tells reporters that it was unclear what prompted the incident at the National Western Complex, where the Colorado Motorcycle Expo was being held this weekend. He says other events associated with the expo have been canceled.

White says investigators believe there was an exchange of gunfire. In addition to the person who was shot and killed, three others were shot. White says another person was stabbed and three others suffered injuries from a fistfight.

Police were keeping a heavy presence at the hospital where the injured people were being treated to prevent the incident from spreading from the expo.

Police are interviewing a person of interest, and White says investigators believe there was more than one shooter.

ALDA, Neb. (AP) — The first year of having genetically pure bison on Crane Trust land near Alda appears to have gone well.

Jacob Salter, who helps manage the herd, says the first year has been “an excellent experience.” That includes the birth of 11 healthy calves, with no calf deaths.

Brice Krohn, senior director at the Crane Trust Nature and Visitor Center, says that number has impressed others who run bison herds.

Krohn and others credit the trust’s philosophy of providing a low-stress environment for the bison.

Krohn says the bison were run through a chute only once, to collect blood and hair samples and to worm the animals. Medication is delivered via a dart gun to keep human contact to a minimum.
