OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say some people have reported smelling natural gas before an explosion in Omaha’s Old Market area, but the authorities say no one called 911.

Firefighters stopped pouring water into the burned-out building on Monday morning. It had housed a restaurant and several apartments before going up in flames after Saturday afternoon’s blast, which resulted in injuries to two people.

Omaha Fire Chief Bernard Kanger says no calls about the odor were found in a review of 911 recordings made as far back as three hours before the explosion. Metropolitan Utilities District officials also say there were no calls about the odor before the blast.

Kanger says investigators haven’t yet concluded what caused the explosion.

BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) — A Beatrice pharmacist is scheduled to be sentenced March 2 for defrauding Medicaid.

Online court records say 50-year-old Tod Lundberg pleaded guilty last week to one count of fraud. His plea agreement with prosecutors calls for him to pay restitution of nearly $38,000.

Prosecutors say Lundberg billed Nebraska Medicaid for the brand name of certain drugs and then dispensed the generic version of those drugs. Medicaid then paid Lundberg a higher price for the brand-name version of the drug.

Prosecutors say Lundberg carried out his scheme from at least 2010 through 2013. A former employee told authorities about the scheme.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha man will spend at least 11 years in prison for the February 2014 rape of a 16-year-old girl.

Douglas County District Judge Greg Schatz sentenced 20-year-old Javohn Templeman to 22 to 25 years in prison, which is cut in half under state sentencing guidelines.

Another man, 20-year-old Nicholas Bregg, pleaded no contest to second-degree sexual assault and will be in prison four-and-a-half to five years.

Authorities believe the girl was drugged at a party, and that Templeman and Bregg sexually assaulted her after she was unconscious.

Prosecutors offered both men deals because of concerns about how the case was handled. The defendants weren’t arrested until nearly a year afterward despite tests that showed their DNA inside the victim.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Investigators are working to determine what caused an explosion and fire that caused extensive damage to a historic downtown Omaha building that housed a restaurant and apartments.

Several witnesses say they smelled natural gas at M’s Pub shortly before the explosion and subsequent fire that started Saturday afternoon.

One man was seriously injured, yet no one was killed in the fire.

Omaha Fire Chief Bernie Kanger said Sunday morning that the fire was essentially out, but crews were still monitoring hot spots for flare ups.

The outside of the four-story brick building was encased in icicles from all the water firefighters sprayed in this weekend’s frigid weather.

Kanger says investigators haven’t determined the cause of the fire or whether the structure is salvageable.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Police have arrested a 45-year-old Omaha woman in the death of a man whose body was found last month in a wooded area in northeast Omaha.

Omaha police said early Saturday that Roslind Snoddy was booked on suspicion of second-degree murder in the death of 51-year-old James Bailey.

Police have not released the cause of Bailey’s death. His body was found the morning of Dec. 26 at 27th and Wirt streets.

An attorney is not yet listed for Snoddy in online court records.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln man is being credited with rescuing a woman from her burning home.

William Curtis Jr. told Lincoln fire officials he was walking home from work just after 2:30 a.m. Friday when he noticed smoke coming from a neighbor’s house.

Fire Investigator Ken Hilger says when no one answered Curtis frantic banging on the door, he kicked it in. That’s when he discovered the home’s 23-year-old resident on the kitchen floor.

Hilger says Curtis carried the woman out the front door. She was taken to a hospital with burns and smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The fire caused about $100,000 in damage to the house and its contents.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A Douglas County judge is not budging from his order to keep his courtroom gun-free — despite concerns by uniformed Omaha police who’ve been barred from entering with their service weapons.

District Judge James Gleason says he is aware of the concerns of Omaha police, who have said that their service weapons are a required part of their uniform.

But Gleason said in a recent written response to Omaha police authorities that he has had a no-guns rule in his courtroom for almost 13 years, and the first time an officer objected was at a Dec. 14 hearing.

Gleason says the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is solely responsible for security at the courthouse.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Police say they are investigating the death of a man whose body was found Friday in a vacant Omaha house as a homicide.

Omaha police say the body of 54-year-old Derek DeWolf was found around 12:30 p.m. Friday in a house near 15th Street and Willis Avenue in east Omaha.

The house had been damaged at one time by fire.

Police have not disclosed how DeWolf died, and no arrests have been made.
