state-patrol-logoNIOBRARA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say they’re seeking a man who disarmed a police officer in northeast Nebraska, pointed the gun at the officer and then ran.

On Wednesday Nebraska State Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins said 25-year-old David Hoffman has not been caught yet.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office says on its Facebook page that it’s believed he may have left the area. The search began after a Niobrara officer tried to arrest Hoffman Tuesday afternoon on a Knox County warrant.

The patrol and other agencies joined the search for Hoffman as Niobrara schools and some businesses were locked down. Officers searched cabins and other buildings at Niobrara State Park.

The warrant says Hoffman’s charged with burglary and theft. Court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could comment on Hoffman’s behalf.

Son of Fallen Nebraska Firefighter Joins Profession

firedptWOOD RIVER, Neb. (AP) — The son of a fallen Nebraska firefighter is following in his father’s footsteps by joining the profession.

Wood River native Matt Woitalewicz received his badge as a firefighter in Lincoln in November. His father, Kenny, died after trying to save an elderly woman in a house fire in 2004.

Woitalewicz’s father was a captain with the Wood River volunteer fire department. He said he wants to honor what his father did.

His mother, Melissa, says she wanted to make sure her son wasn’t becoming a firefighter only because of what happened to his father. She says her son has “what it takes.”

Lincoln’s Protected Bike Lane Not Keeping Out Cars, Trucks

The $3.2 million N Street Bike Track connects the Haymarket district on the west side of downtown Lincoln with Antelope Valley trails and beyond to the east.

Cyclist Gary Bentrup said the lane’s curbs and dividers could be confusing some drivers.

The city plans to add more street striping at certain intersections this week to help keep cars in their designated lanes while turning. The city also intends to install more 3- or 4-foot tall reflective plastic tubes in and near the bike lane to deter motorized traffic.
