YORK, Neb. (AP) — A 35-year-old woman has died after a crash involving a semitrailer in York County.
Danielle Koch was killed when her vehicle collided with the semitrailer around 3:30 p.m. Friday. According to a news release from the York County Sheriff’s Office, Koch’s vehicle struck the rear of the semitrailer.
No other injuries were reported.
Authorities say 25-year-old Anthony Rahe was arrested Friday on suspicion of two felony counts of unlawful intrusion. It’s unclear whether Rahe has an attorney who could be contacted to comment on his behalf. Online court records don’t yet list the case. Rahe is an agriculture instructor.
District Superintendent Blake Dahlberg says a student reported seeing the camera on Thursday and that investigators subsequently focused their suspicions on a school staffer. The district says Rahe has been suspended and barred from the junior/senior high school campus.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha woman has been arrested after police say she ran over the foot of a toddler in her care with a lawnmower.
32-year-old Karla Drazic was arrested Thursday on a charge of felony child neglect causing serious injury.
Police say the incident happened Aug. 13 at Drazic’s in-home day care in west Omaha.
Drazic told investigators she was mowing the lawn when she accidentally ran over a 23-month-old boy’s foot. Police say one of the boy’s toes had to be amputated.
The child’s parents say he is recovering well. They don’t think Drazic intentionally harmed the child, but support the charges because of what they call her poor judgment.
A publicly-listed phone number for Drazic could not be found Saturday.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Prosecutors have charged a 63-year-old Lincoln man with felony child abuse after police say he beat a 12-year-old boy with a piece of wood and his fists.
Floyd Carman was arrested late Thursday after his wife reported the abuse. Carman was charged Friday.
Carman’s wife reported that she and her husband had been arguing Friday night when he turned on the boy.
Police say Carman pushed the boy into a bathroom, then hit him several times with a piece of door trim he pulled from the wall. Police say Carman then punched the boy four times in the face.
Police reported the boy had a black eye and other bruises.
Carman remained jailed Saturday and could not be reached for comment.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — An Indiana woman says her training in medieval combat helped her corner a home intruder.
43-year-old Karen Dolley of Indianapolis threw punches until she had the man cornered during the Thursday night break-in. She then kept him subdued with a Japanese sword she keeps near her bed.
Dolley says she learned to fight as a teenager in the Society for Creative Anachronism, a group that recreates skills of the Middle Ages. She also skates with roller derby team Naptown Roller Girls.
Police responding to Dolley’s 911 call arrested 30-year-old Jacob Wessel of Greenwood, charging him with residential entry. Police say he forced open the home’s back door. Police reports say he was taken to a hospital because he was high on an unknown substance.
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — A company that hatches chicks to stock egg producers is considering building a hatchery in central Nebraska that would produce 24 million day-old chicks a year.
Hendrix-ISA, of Ephrata, Pennsylvania, is developing plans to build a hatchery at Grand Island’s Platte Valley Industrial Park-East.
Hendrix sales manager Ken Alvarez says the hatchery would create 50 new jobs.
Hendrix has applied for $2.5 million in tax-increment financing, under the business name Hatchery Holdings LLC, to build on 20 acres.
Alvarez says that besides the hatchery, Hendrix-ISA expects to create about eight to nine breeder farms to feed eggs into the hatchery.
Grand Island officials say at least one other location outside the city is being considered by Hendrix.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Police have identified two men killed and a woman injured in a shooting at a home in north Omaha.
Police say 26-year-old Malquan King and 23-year-old Arelius Hassell were killed in the shooting that happened early Saturday morning. Officers responding to a report of a shooting at the home arrived just after 2 a.m. Saturday to find the two men dead and a woman, identified as 25-year-old Tommynique Valentine, injured. Valentine was taken to an Omaha hospital, where she was treated and released.
Police say several children were inside the home at the time of the shooting, but were not injured. The children have been taken into protective custody.
Police have not released any other information about the shooting and are still looking for suspects.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Former Nebraska football standout and current NFL star Ndamukong Suh (ehn-DAHM’-uh-kehn SOO) plans to open a Nike store in the former Nebraska Bookstore space in downtown Lincoln.
The University of Nebraska Board of Regents on Friday approved a $1.25 million agreement with Suh’s company, TFL Development LLC, to buy 17,000 to 19,000 square feet of space at the corner of 13th and Q streets.
In a request for proposals, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln asked developers to propose a “nationally or globally visible retail store,” specifically clothing or footwear, for the former bookstore space.
Suh is a former All-American defensive lineman for Nebraska. He played five NFL seasons with the Detroit Lions before joining the Miami Dolphins this year.
PAPILLION, Neb. (AP) — A Papillion man found guilty of shooting his family’s two dogs with a BB gun, killing one, has been sentenced to 30 days in jail.
Barry L. Richey was sentenced Thursday. He pleaded no contest in July to two counts of cruel mistreatment of an animal.
Prosecutors say Papillion police responded to a disturbance at Richey’s home on April 20. Police say Richey’s wife told officers that when she took her Yorkshire terriers to the veterinarian, she learned they had been shot several times. One dog later died.
Richey will only spend 20 days in jail due to time already served.
HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — A district judge has denied a request to move the trial of a 34-year-old Hastings woman accused of suffocating a toddler with a baby wipe.
Mark Porto of Grand Island, an attorney for Azudany Serrano-Contreras, had asked for the change in venue, arguing that pretrial publicity had made it impossible for his client to get a fair trial in Adams County. That motion was denied Thursday.
Serrano-Contreras faces trial in January on a charge of committing intentional child abuse causing death. If convicted, she faces 20 years to life.
Prosecutors say Serrano-Contreras was baby-sitting 19-month-old Aliyana Peterson on March 12 when she stuffed a baby wipe down the girl’s throat. Serrano-Contreras has said the child put the wipe in her own mouth.
