Omaha police plan increased patrols of pedestrian bridge

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha police say they’re planning to increase patrols of a downtown pedestrian bridge after a shooting there.

Police say the increased focus on the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge comes after shooting around 1:45 a.m. Thursday on the bridge injured a 20-year-old man.

Police say they’ve arrested a juvenile in the shooting.

The bridge spans the Missouri River, connecting Omaha to Council Bluffs, Iowa.

The bridge, which is open around the clock, is in the process of having brighter LED lights installed along its path.

Police say its riverfront patrol unit continuously patrols on and around the bridge, but that members of the gang unit will join in on the patrols.

Suspected arrested in shooting death of Lincoln man

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say they’ve arrested a suspect in the shooting death of a man found lying on the ground near the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s East Campus.

Lincoln police say officers arrested the 22-year-old man around 7:50 p.m. Thursday on suspicion of first-degree murder and use of a weapon. Online court records don’t show that he’s been formally charged.

Police say the victim was pronounced dead at the scene Thursday morning. He’s been identified as 47-year-old Desmond Fowler, who lived in Lincoln.

4th person arrested in killing of Council Bluffs man

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Police in western Iowa say a fourth person has been charged in the robbery death of a Council Bluffs man.

Council Bluffs police say in a news release that 25-year-old Ryan McDonald, of Glenwood, was arrested around 3:30 a.m. Friday on a warrant charging him with first-degree murder in the January death of 38-year-old Adam Angeroth. Police did not release any information explaining McDonald’s suspected role in the killing.

Prosecutors have also charged three people from Omaha in the killing, including a 16-year-old boy charged as an adult with first-degree murder.

Angeroth’s body was found in his apartment on Jan. 24. Police have still not release details of his death, including how he was killed.

Man denies assault; says he was just teaching teen about sex

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A man who told authorities he was just teaching a 16-year-old girl about sex has been convicted of sex assault and other crimes.

A jury found 42-year-old Joshua Kandler guilty on Tuesday. Online court records don’t show a sentencing date.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that police arrested him on Feb. 1, 2018, after Kandler confirmed portions of the girl’s statement that he was educating her on sexuality. She had told authorities that she and Kandler had sex several times in 2017.

He denied her report and testified that she’d made up stories about being sexually abused.

Former corrections officer takes theft case plea deal

PAPILLION, Neb. (AP) — A former police union treasurer accused of stealing more than $170,000 from his union has taken a plea deal.

Sarpy County District Court records say 43-year-old Douglas Glazebrook, of Papillion (puh-PIHL’-yuhn), pleaded no contest Monday to unauthorized use of a financial transaction device. Prosecutors dropped theft and forgery charges in return. He also agreed to make restitution. His sentencing is set for July 8.

Authorities say Glazebrook took the money between January 2016 and this past January from the Nebraska Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 8. He was treasurer.

Glazebrook no longer works for the Douglas County Department of Corrections.

Man found guilty of killing girlfriend in Omaha suburb

PAPILLION, Neb. (AP) – A man accused of killing his longtime girlfriend in an Omaha suburb has been convicted after a nonjury trial.

Sarpy County District Court records say a judge found 57-year-old Alan Stack guilty Tuesday of second-degree murder and use of a deadly weapon. He’d been charged with beating to death Beverly Bauermeister in November 2017 at the home they shared in Bellevue.

The judge acquitted Stack of abuse of a vulnerable adult in connection with the death of Bauermeister’s 90-year-old mother. Stack’s sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 14.

Former Nebraska state senator cited for urinating in public 

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – A former state senator who’s been working for the city of Lincoln resigned his post after being ticketed for urinating in public.

Police say David Landis was charged Tuesday after an officer saw him urinating next to his car parked just west of the County-City Building on Friday.

Landis told the Lincoln Journal Star on Wednesday that he regrets what he did and accepts the consequences of what he says was an irresponsible act. The misdemeanor carries a sentence of up to six months in jail. Landis also says he’s applied for pretrial diversion.

He has quit his job as director of Lincoln’s Urban Development Department. Mayor Chris Beutler (BEYTE’-lur) appointed Landis to the position in 2007.

The two served together in the Legislature. Landis represented Lincoln’s District 46 from 1979 to 2007, after term limits kept him from the ballot.

Trial date set for 1 of 2 men charged in Hastings slaying

HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) – A trial has been scheduled for one of two men charged in the shooting death of a Hastings man.

Adams County District Court records say 22-year-old Daniel Harden has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder and use of a firearm to commit a felony. Authorities say Harden and 21-year-old Deante Mullen, of Lincoln, killed 19-year-old Jose Hansen on Sept. 11, 2017, during a robbery attempt.

Harden’s trial is set to begin Oct. 22 in Hastings. Mullen also has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge and is awaiting trial.

Nebraska man ID’d as victim of fatal shooting in New Mexico

MAGDALENA, N.M. (AP) — Authorities have released the name of a Nebraska man who was killed in New Mexico earlier this week.

New Mexico State Police say the victim was 30-year-old Stuart Gordon of Lincoln.

His name was released Wednesday after his relatives were notified of his death.

State Police say 39-year-old Jo Hill is jailed without bond on suspicion of an open count of murder.

The Magdalena Marshals Office was dispatched Monday afternoon to the High Country Lodge about a gunshot victim.

Gordon was pronounced dead at the scene and State Police was brought in to investigate.

They say Hill and Gordon got into a physical altercation in the parking lot of the lodge.

Hill then reportedly shot the victim.

It was unclear Wednesday if Hill has a lawyer yet.

Former Nebraska trooper gets probation for drug violations

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A former Nebraska State Patrol investigator has been sentenced to two years’ probation for possession of drugs.

The federal prosecutor’s office for Nebraska said in a news release today that 46-year-old Christopher Kober was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty to a single count in a deal with prosecutors. As part of the deal, Kober must surrender his law enforcement certification, forego any appeal of his firing from the Nebraska State Patrol and not seek future employment in law enforcement.

Investigators say Kober was living in Bellevue when officers raided his home in March 2017, finding nearly 2,000 pills that included various opioids that Kober took from prescription medication collection events and overdose investigations from January 2016 until his arrest.

Kober was fired following an internal patrol investigation.
