HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — A June date has been set for the start of a Nebraska man’s second trial in the death of his grandson.

Peter Draper, of Naponee, in January was granted a new trial by the Nebraska Supreme Court as it reversed his 2013 convictions in the death of 2-year-old Joseph Rinehart Jr.

The high court unanimously sided with Draper, who had appealed his conviction on the grounds that his wife should not have been allowed to be called as a witness for the prosecution.

Court documents say the second trial is scheduled to begin June 22 with jury selection. The documents say the trial will be held in Adams County District Court in Hastings because the Franklin County District Court courtroom is inadequate.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities are investigating a fatal collision in Lancaster County that killed an Omaha man.

The crash happened on Southwest 100th Street around 6:40 a.m.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s office says a southbound car driven by 31-year-old Mario Loarca-Garcia crossed over the center line and collided with another car.

Loarca-Garcia died at the scene of the crash.

The driver of the other vehicle, 44-year-old Merri Bradley of rural Crete, Nebraska, was taken to a Lincoln hospital in critical condition.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Helicopters will fly back and forth across parts of eastern Nebraska this spring to map out groundwater levels.

Several natural resource districts hired the helicopter to get a better idea of how much groundwater is available.

The low-level flights will cross parts of Butler, Saunders, Seward, Sarpy, Douglas, Lancaster, Cass, Otoe, Johnson, Nemaha, Richardson, Pawnee and Gage counties.

The helicopter will carry electronic instruments on a steel frame suspended 100 feet below the craft.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A 21-year-old Iowa man was killed in a two-vehicle crash while his brother was driving this weekend, and four others were hurt.

Police say the crash happened shortly after 1 a.m. in northeast Omaha.

A Chevrolet Impala was struck by a Buick Lucerne in the intersection of 30th and Lake streets. The Chevrolet, which was driving faster than the 30 mph limit, spun and hit a metal pole.

Nickales Bywater of Pacific Junction, Iowa, was riding in the backseat of the Chevrolet before the crash. He was critically hurt and died at the hospital.

The Chevrolet was driven by 19-year-old Jordan Bywater of Council Bluffs, Iowa. He and two other people were injured in the crash.

A passenger in the Buick sustained minor injuries and the driver wasn’t hurt.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Several top choirs will share the stage Saturday at the Lied Center for Performing Arts to celebrate the Lincoln facility’s 25th anniversary.

The choirs will also present a newly commissioned work called “Let There Be Music” that Nebraska composer Kurt Knecht wrote.

Lied Center executive director Bill Stephan says the performance is a fitting way to celebrate the performing arts center.

More than 250 singers will participate in the show. The choirs include contemporary, gospel, youth, college and adult groups.

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (AP) — Three people have been arrested in South Sioux City after police say they led law enforcement officers on a chase across four northeast Nebraska counties.

The three people, all in their 20s, were arrested Friday.

The chase began with reports of a burglary in Niobrara on Friday morning, then later a carjacking in the Crofton area. Investigators say the suspected pushed a person out of a minivan and sped away in it.

Sheriff’s deputies and the Nebraska State Patrol caught up with the stolen van, and the chase reached speeds of up to 100 mph on U.S. Highway 20 until the van crashed into a South Sioux City discount store. There were no serious injuries.

ST. PAUL, Neb. (AP) — A 29-year-old man who caused a crash last year that killed another man has been sentenced to five to seven years in prison.

Justin Arrowsmith, of Arcadia, was sentenced Friday in Howard County District Court for one count of manslaughter.

Prosecutors say Arrowsmith was high on methamphetamine and other drugs when he drove in the wrong lane of Highway 92 on July 20 and hit the car of 21-year-old Derek Holt, of St. Paul. Holt died at a nearby hospital.

Judge Karin Noakes said during Arrowsmith’s sentencing that he had made little effort to receive treatment for his drug addiction.

ODELL, Neb. (AP) — A 52-year-old Cortland man has died following a motorcycle crash near Odell in southeastern Nebraska.

Jeffrey Fischer was driving the motorcycle east on Nebraska Highway 8 near Odell at 4 p.m. Friday when he went into a ditch and flipped.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office says Fischer was taken by helicopter to Bryan West Campus in Lincoln, where he died.

Investigators say Fischer was wearing a helmet.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A woman convicted of lying to police about being the victim of an anti-gay attack had acknowledged that she violated her probation and now faces possible jail time.

Charlie Rogers on Friday told Lancaster County Judge Thomas Fox that she did not report to jail on Jan. 15 to finish a 90-day jail sentence.

Fox found Rogers violated her probation. Rogers faces up to a year behind bars if the judge revokes her probation.

Rogers, a former University of Nebraska-Lincoln basketball player, was convicted of lying to police about being attacked by masked men and having anti-gay slurs carved into her skin.

Prosecutors say Rogers faked the attack because she thought it would inspire change in the treatment of gay people.
