BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska man has been arrested on eight charges after he called 911 complaining that he couldn’t use his cell phone to send text messages.

22-year-old Matthew J. Stevison was arrested Thursday for false reporting, assault of a peace officer, resisting arrest and other crimes.

The Beatrice Police Department says it received a 911 call from Stevison in which he blamed dispatchers for his phone trouble and demanded that they fix it. Officers say they later located Stevison on a bicycle and ordered him to stop and talk.

According to court documents, Stevison then threw his bicycle at one officer and began fighting with others. Records show Stevison said he had overdosed on pills.

Stevison is scheduled to appear in court on March 17.

Fire Official: Flames Destroyed Eastern Nebraska Farmhouse

fireNEHAWKA, Neb. (AP) — A fire official says a fire destroyed a three-story farmhouse in eastern Nebraska.

The Nehawka Volunteer Fire Department says it took nearly eight hours on Thursday to extinguish the flames that engulfed a farmhouse near Nehawka. Assistant Fire Chief Shane Adams says freezing temperatures, wind and a distant water source hindered rescue crews’ efforts to put out the fire.

Firefighters had to drive tanker trucks to a hydrant located about five miles away because of a limited water supply in Nehawka. He says the cold made it most difficult to fight the flames.

Adams says no one was in the home in the time of the fire. No injuries have been reported.

CNH Announces More Layoffs at Grand Island Plant

cnhGRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — A farm implement plant in Grand Island will be eliminating the jobs of 136 more employees.

CNH Industrial America said in a news release Thursday that the indefinite layoffs result from market conditions and that they will begin in May and be finished by July.

In August the company announced layoffs of 170 full-time company staffers and 68 agency employees, and in May the company said it would cut 200 third-party agency positions.

On Friday CNH North America spokeswoman Kathleen Prause (prows) declined to tell The Associated Press how many workers still would be on the plant payroll after the 136 people are let go. She also would not say whether the plant was still producing combine harvesters and self-propelled windrowers.

Ex-Sheriff’s Office Employee Drops Lawsuit Against Merrick County

merrick-countyCENTRAL CITY, Neb. (AP) — Court records say a woman acquitted of theft has dropped a lawsuit she filed against the sheriff of Merrick County.

Lori Sautter filed the lawsuit in October, saying that Sheriff Kevin Campbell invaded her privacy and painted her in a false light within the community. Sautter was charged with theft after a 2012 state audit determined that nearly $17,300 was missing from the department. All but about $5,900 was later found. Sautter had been the office manager but was fired. Sautter was found not guilty at trial.

Online court records say the dismissal order was filed Feb. 9. It’s unclear whether there was a settlement. Lawyers for Sautter and Campbell didn’t immediately return messages left Friday by The Associated Press.

About 125 Workers Losing Jobs with Closure of Nebraska Plant

land-o-frostWEST POINT, Neb. (AP) — About 125 workers have been told they’ll be losing their jobs when a meat plant closes in northeast Nebraska.

On Thursday Land O’ Frost told employees in West Point that production will continue into the second quarter of the year at the former Wimmer’s plant, giving them time to find other jobs. The Munster, Indiana-based company says it will provide outplacement services, and workers will be eligible to apply for jobs at other Land O’Frost locations.

The former Wimmer’s Meats company was founded in 1934 and was sold to Land O’ Frost three years ago.

Land O’Frost President and CEO David VanEekeren says the consolidation of production at other company plants will help Land O’Frost operate more competitively.

NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. (AP) — The mayor of Nebraska City has resigned, saying he’d been undermined by some members of the City Council.

Jack Hobbie quit Thursday morning after 6½ years in the post. He said his resignation “is primarily due to a lack of respect and communication with me as the mayor.”

He complained that he was blindsided in December when the City Council voted to not reappoint city administrator Joe Johnson and city clerk-treasurer Arnold Ehlers. Hobbie says he was blindsided again earlier this month when two of the commissioners tried, without his knowledge, to hire an interim city clerk-treasurer.

The mayor and the commissioners of finance, public works, streets and parks act as the five-member City Council.

The city of around 7,300 people is in southeast Nebraska.

Bellevue police on Thursday arrested the 35-year-old Omaha man on suspicion of burglary and felony assault on an officer.

Police say an officer was patrolling a neighborhood, when he saw the man riding the bicycle on a street. The officer stopped the man, who struck the officer twice in the face and ran.

The man was found hiding in a shed 20 minutes later, after other Bellevue officers and the Omaha Police Department’s helicopter were called to the area.

The officer was treated for minor injuries at a hospital.

Omaha Chief Says Robbery Suspect Shot in Back by Officer

omaha-policeOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer says a robbery suspect killed this week by police was shot in the back and that internal affairs and grand jury investigations will determine whether the shooting was justified.

Danny Elrod died Monday night after being shot by Officer Alvin Lugod. Authorities later determined that Elrod was unarmed.

Schmaderer detailed the events of the shooting during a press conference Thursday. The chief says Elrod robbed a nearby store of money, then refused police commands to show his hands and get on the ground. Schmaderer said Elrod repeatedly told officers on the scene that he had a gun and repeatedly reached for his waistband, as though he had a weapon.

Schmaderer said Elrod was shot as he turned and grabbed the top of a fence.

Labs Extend Record as US Top Dog, But Bulldogs Make Waves

labradorNEW YORK (AP) — The American Kennel Club is releasing its 2014 breed popularity rankings on Thursday.

They show Labrador retrievers reigned as the nation’s top dog for the 24th year. They broke poodles’ decades-old record in 2013.

But bulldogs have hit a new high: No. 4. Their smaller, bat-eared cousins, French bulldogs, sauntered into the top 10 for the first time in nearly a century. They’re now No. 9.

German shepherds, golden retrievers and beagles are holding their own in the top five. Yorkshire terriers, poodles, boxers and Rottweilers fill out the top 10.

Dachshunds slipped from 10th to 11th.

The AKC doesn’t release raw numbers, only rankings. They reflect puppies and other newly registered dogs.
