Dispatchers in Colfax County to Receive Texts

colfax county sheriffSCHUYLER, Neb. (AP) — Dispatchers in Colfax County in eastern Nebraska will soon be able to receive text messages for 911 emergencies.

The Colfax County Board of Commissioners recently approved a measure to spend more than $100,000 on a new text-to-911 system. It will give emergency dispatchers at the county courthouse in Schuyler the ability to receive text messages from cellphones and other devices.

Colfax County Sheriff Paul Kruse says there are benefits to the service, such as offering domestic violence victims a second option to contact dispatchers. It will also help people with hearing and speech impairments.

Several other Nebraska counties have plans to offer the service. Kruse says the system in Colfax County should be installed within the next 90 days.

Nebraska Game and Parks to Burn Brush Piles

Nebraska_game_and_parksLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has announced it will burn brush piles, as weather and snow cover allow, at several sites across the state.

The brush pile burns are scheduled for state recreational and wildlife management areas in 11 counties, including Antelope, Burt, Knox, Jefferson, Lancaster and Otoe counties. Other counties are Saline, Seward, Thayer, Pawnee and Washington.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska attorney general’s office is seeking disciplinary action against a Lincoln orthopedic surgeon and former Husker football player who is accused of practicing medicine while impaired.

The petition filed this week alleges that Dr. Scott E. Strasburger arrived at work on Nov. 26 in an impaired state that prevented him from performing surgeries.

According to the petition, Strasburger refused to submit to a drug test. The petition says Strasburger failed a drug test in July, months after completing an outpatient treatment program. It says Strasburger initially tested positive for a controlled substance in October 2013.

A phone message left at Strasburger’s office wasn’t immediately returned. A home phone number rang unanswered.

Strasburger was a defensive end for the Huskers and was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 1985.
