Beatrice Child Rape Case Sentencing Delayed

sex-offendersBEATRICE, Neb. (AP) — Questions have been raised about the public danger posed by a Beatrice man who was convicted of sexually assaulting a child.

The sentencing of 39-year-old Scott Taylor was postponed until the questions are answered. In September Taylor pleaded no contest to sexual assault of a child. Prosecutors had lowered the charge.

Deputy Gage County Attorney Rick Schreiner has filed a petition in support of declaring that Taylor is developmentally disabled and a danger to others. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services has filed an objection, saying Taylor is not developmentally disabled as defined in state law.

A hearing is set for Jan. 14 on the department’s objection. A hearing on the disability issue is set for Feb. 26.

A court affidavit filed by an Atkinson officer says the boy was taken to West Holt Memorial Hospital the night of Oct. 26 after the boy became unresponsive. The driver of the vehicle was taken to a hospital for the medical issue. A witness told The Denver Post that he saw a Mercedes run onto a sidewalk and hit the officers before crashing into a Taco Bell.

Prosecutors said Marescalco was driving when he intentionally crashed the vehicle into a pole in July. Twenty-five-year-old Sharlee Arnett, a passenger in the car, was killed.

Report Says Racial Gaps Cost Omaha Area Nearly $4 Billion

omahaOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A report says that nearly $4 billion would have been part of the regional economy in 2012 if racial gaps in income, employment and education were closed in the Omaha area.

The Metropolitan Area Planning Agency released its “Heartland 2050 Equitable Growth Profile” on Tuesday. It says minorities, which help drive Omaha’s population growth, are less likely to have high school degrees and skills needed for the modern workforce.

The report offered several suggestions to decrease the disparities between races. Among the recommendations were for the city to provide more job training programs and invest in public infrastructure to create jobs.

MAPA’s executive director says the costs of inequity will increase unless the racial gaps are closed.
