Beatrice Police Working Through Disruptions

beatrice-policeBEATRICE, Neb. (AP) — Officers, dispatchers and others have been working through the disruption caused by installation of new heating and cooling equipment in the Beatrice Police Department building.

The $155,000 project began about two weeks ago. Officer work stations have been moved and interview areas and technology have been altered to accommodate the process, which is expected to last until February.

Staffers hope they won’t have to spend too much time in the cold when the switchover to the new equipment is made. Public properties director Mark Pethoud says he hopes the transition will take only a day or two.

Man Gets Probation from Stealing from York Jaycees

gavel-and-scaleYORK, Neb. (AP) — A 35-year-old man who was convicted of stealing more than $1,400 from the York Jaycees has been given two years of probation and conditional jail time.

Travis Stuhr was sentenced earlier this week on four misdemeanor counts of theft. He’d pleaded no contest after making a deal with prosecutors. In addition to the probation, Stuhr was given 180 days in jail, which can be waived by a judge if Stuhr abides by the terms of his probation.

Prosecutors say Stuhr, of York, had access to the Jaycees checking account because he was supposed to pay bills from a demolition derby the group sponsored. York County Attorney Candace Dick says Stuhr wrote four checks to himself totaling $1,430. She also says restitution has been paid.

Omaha Carjacking Thwarted by Girls’ Presence

omaha-policeOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The presence of two little girls may have thwarted a carjacking in Omaha.

Police say a man loaded the two 6-year-olds in the back seat of a car a little after 7 p.m. Thursday and was preparing to drive them away when he was approached by three men. Police say the three men pulled the man away from the running car and one got in behind the wheel and sped off. The two other men ran away.

Police say the man driving the car stopped less than a block away after noticing the girls. He got out and fled on foot, leaving the girls in the car, unharmed.

New Home for Nebraska Guard Museum Shaping Up

nebraska-national-guardSEWARD, Neb. (AP) — The new Seward home for the Nebraska National Guard State Museum is slowly taking shape as it’s transformed from its previous mission as a Guard armory.

The Nebraska National Guard’s state historian, Gerald “Jerry” Meyer, said the museum’s nearly 11,000 items provide him with “a treasure hunt every day.”

The museum’s former home was in the State Arsenal building on what was the state fair location in Lincoln. The National Guard moved the museum to make way for the Nebraska Innovation Campus, a University of Nebraska-Lincoln research park being built on the former fairgrounds.

The Guard hopes to have the Seward building and grounds ready for visitors during Seward’s Fourth of July celebration next year.

Cops: Woman Drops Cocaine Baggie in Police Station

odd-newsUNIONTOWN, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say a woman being cited for public drunkenness in Pennsylvania accidentally dropped a baggie of crack cocaine on the police station floor.

Uniontown police say 23-year-old Savannah Turachak, of Lemont Furnace, was patted down for weapons but not otherwise searched when she was brought to the station Nov. 19. That’s because police were just citing and releasing her.

But police say Turachak returned moments later to report being harassed by someone and, in the process, fluffed her shirt to straighten it out — and the drugs fell out.

Surveillance video shows she tried to pick up the bag but instead left it when three other people walked in. Police found it a short time later and charged her.

Online court records don’t list an attorney for Turachak.

Marshal and Stacy Hardy and their three children escaped their Norfolk home about six weeks ago after it caught on fire.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Expectant Mom Hit by Car Dies, Baby Born Alive

ambulance-lightsPITTSBURGH (AP) — Authorities in Pittsburgh say a pregnant woman sitting outside a neighborhood drugstore was struck and killed when an elderly driver trying to park jumped the curb and pinned her against the wall.

Her nearly full-term baby was delivered by cesarean section and remained in critical condition Wednesday night.

Police say 30-year-old Jodie Guthrie was outside a North Side drugstore Wednesday afternoon when an 88-year-old motorist tried to pull his minivan into a parking space.

Police Commander RaShall Brackney says the driver might have hit the gas instead of the brake. It’s not clear if charges will be filed.

Guthrie’s death comes the same day that a 27-year-old pregnant woman in New York was fatally shot after dropping off her children at school. Her daughter was born alive but later died.

Nikko Jenkins

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The man convicted of first-degree murder in four 2013 shootings shortly after he was released from prison has filed another lawsuit accusing the state of failing to adequately treat his mental illness.

Nikko Jenkins is seeking $1.7 million in damages because he says his mental health deteriorated during more than two years in solitary confinement.

The 28-year-old Jenkins made some similar claims in two other handwritten lawsuits filed against officials earlier this year, but those cases were dismissed because of technical problems.

A spokesman for the Department of Correctional Services, James Foster, declined to comment on the lawsuit filed Tuesday.

Jenkins shot and killed four people in Omaha in a 10-day period in August 2013, and was convicted of four counts of first-degree murder in April.

Girl, 12, Saves 4-Year-Old Sister from House Fire

fire-graphicHOMESTEAD, Pa. (AP) — A 12-year-old girl saved her 4-year-old sister by carrying her out of their burning home in the Pittsburgh suburbs.

Laniyah Coller (lah-NY’-ah KOH’-ler) said her mom hollered that the family’s Homestead residence was on fire about 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Laniyah was upstairs with her little sister, Angel-Lynn, and grabbed the still-sleeping girl.

Angel-Lynn says, “The first thing when I woke up, my sister was carrying me. I saw the fire all up there,” she added, pointing to her badly damaged home.

Laniyah says she asked her mother whether to jump out a window, and was told instead to hurry downstairs.

Laniyah says, “That’s when I grabbed my sister. I just skipped the steps. All the smoke was in my eyes.”

The fire’s cause was still being determined.
