US Official: Auto Safety Agency Under Review

NHTSAWASHINGTON (AP) — A senior Obama administration official says the “safety culture” of the federal agency that oversees auto recalls is being reviewed.

The agency has been criticized for not acting aggressively enough regarding recalls of millions of vehicles with defective air bags or faulty ignition switches.

The official says a team is examining risk management and the safety posture in general at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The official also says that further action is possible involving air bag inflators made by Takata Corp. The inflators can rupture, ejecting shrapnel in a crash. Recalls have been limited to vehicles registered in regions with high humidity, but millions more could be affected if recalls are extended nationwide.

The official requested not to be named as a condition of briefing reporters.

Nebraska High Court Denies Killer’s Relief Motion

ne-supreme-courtLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has again denied a request for freedom by a woman sentenced to life in prison for the 1998 group slaying of a teenage friend in Bellevue.

Niccole Wetherell was among six people between the ages of 16 and 20 involved in the murder of 19-year-old Scott Catenacci, who was stabbed at least 57 times in a city park. Wetherell, now 34, pleaded no contest to first-degree murder in 1999. She lost her direct appeal in 2000.

The high court later denied her first appeal for postconviction relief. After losing her second postconviction motion, she appealed, arguing that the lower court should have appointed an attorney for her and that her life sentence is unconstitutional.

On Friday, the Nebraska Supreme Court found no merit to her arguments.

German Balloonists Discover ‘Nebraska Nice’

good-deedsLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A couple of German balloonists who landed in a Nebraska soybean field have learned why Nebraskans are considered nice.

Heinz-Otto and Marion Lausch had been flying a gas air balloon as one of seven teams participating in an international ballooning competition earlier this month. They departed from New Mexico with their sights set on Kentucky, traveling for more than 45 hours until bad weather forced them to land in a soybean field in Nebraska.

Marion Lausch went looking for help, but couldn’t find anyone at a nearby farmhouse.

Soon, deputies with the Cass County sheriff’s office arrived. The field’s owner had called police after spotting the balloon dropping onto her land around midnight. The next morning, she came out and apologized, inviting the couple and their crew in for coffee and homemade cookies.

Medical Records Scattered All Over Omaha Street

Medical-ChartOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The owner of a medical waste company says it was an improperly secured truck door that sent hundreds of confidential medical records onto an Omaha street.

Cellphone video taken Wednesday by Omaha business owner Jason Bucsis shows thousands of pages blowing on and around a southwest Omaha street. Bucsis says a back door of a Medi-Waste Disposal truck was open as it traveled, sending boxes of records into the street.

Good Samaritans scrambled to try to help the driver recover the records, even reaching into sewers to grab papers.

Medi-Waste Disposal owner Ryan Funk says he believes most of the records were recovered. He says new policies will be put in place to try to keep such an accident from happening again.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say several University of Nebraska-Lincoln students in a fraternity face felony charges in the alcohol-related death of a freshman.

University police say four FarmHouse Fraternity members were arrested Thursday on suspicion of procuring alcohol to a minor resulting in death. Three other students, including another fraternity member, face citations.

Eighteen-year-old Clayton Real was found dead at the fraternity house near campus in September. Affidavits show Real’s cause of death was acute alcohol intoxication.

The affidavits also say fraternity members threw a party the night before and provided alcohol to underage attendees, including Real.

Sgt. Jerry Plessel says the arrested students are in custody at the Lancaster County jail. A hearing is scheduled Friday. University spokesman Steve Smith says the school has suspended the fraternity chapter indefinitely.
