CDC: Protocol Breach in Treating Ebola Patient

cdcWASHINGTON (AP) — A top federal health official says a health worker diagnosed with Ebola has been unable to identify a breach in procedures that might have led to her infection.

Dr. Tom Frieden, head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, says the Texas hospital worker had extensive contact with Thomas Eric Duncan before Duncan died Wednesday from Ebola.

Frieden says the worker has a low level of virus and is being monitored.

He says the diagnosis of the worker — who’s not identified — clearly shows that there was a breach of protocol.

Among the things CDC will investigate is removal of protective gear, because removing gear incorrectly can lead to a contamination.

The investigation will look at dialysis and intubation — procedures with the potential for spreading infectious material.

A sheriff’s office statement says investigators are looking for a vehicle with possible front-end damage and leaking fluid.

Lorence graduated from Doniphan-Trumbull High School. He was a senior at Wesleyan this year majoring in elementary education and a member of the football team.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The chancellor of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is hoping to see the institution join others in adding a chief diversity officer to its administrative cabinet.

Chancellor Harvey Perlman’s call follows several racially-charged incidents on the university’s campus last year. That included a student using racial slurs a student senate meeting, another slur scrawled on a campus sidewalk and an ethnically insensitive homecoming skit in which students wore sombreros.

One study says more than 30 colleges and universities in the past five years have created an administrative position dedicated to fostering diversity and inclusion on campus.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Family members and doctors treating an 11-year-old boy critically injured earlier this month when a truck hit his bike, then sped off, say the boy is getting better.

Dominic “Dom” Walker was riding his bike to Culler Middle School on Oct. 1 when he was hit by a pickup that police say ran a red light.

The sixth-grader wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time and suffered life-threatening brain injuries.

Doctors say the swelling of the boy’s brain has slowed, and his bruised lungs have strengthened. Doctors hope to remove a ventilator tube in the coming days.

Prosecutors have charged 24-year-old Jared St. Louis, of Lincoln, with felony drunk driving and leaving the scene of the accident.

Woman Who Forced Kids to Drink Bleach Committed

gavel-moreBRENTWOOD, N.H. (AP) — A New Hampshire woman who pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to forcing her two children to drink bleach will spend at least five years in a state psychiatric hospital.

Wendy Miller-Wright was charged last year with attempted murder. She admitted in court that she made the children drink the chemical in June 2013 at their home in Seabrook by telling them it was medicine.

Police say her 6-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter spit out most of the bleach and went to a neighbor for help.

Miller-Wright also drank bleach. Police say she was trying to kill herself and her children.

Miller-Wright has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She was sentenced Friday.

The children are living with their father.

UNMC Nursing College Gets $300,000 Grant

UNMCOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing has been awarded a $300,000 federal grant to provide financial support to graduate nurse practitioner students from underserved or rural Nebraska areas.

Nursing professor Karen Grigsby says the grant — an Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship — is projected to help 14 or more qualified students across Nebraska in the next year.

The grant comes from the federal Health Resources and Services Administration. The goal is to increase the number of primary health care providers who can deliver care to those living in areas lacking primary care physicians.

The university says about half of the resident students who’ve graduated from the UNMC College of Nursing master’s degree in nurse practitioner specialties live in rural or underserved areas.

Arrest Made in Rape of 100-Year-Old Kansas Woman

wichita-policeWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Police in Wichita have arrested a suspect in the rape of a 100-year-old woman during a break-in at her home.

The 35-year-old man was being held Friday in the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of rape and aggravated burglary. He’s expected to be charged next week.

Police have not released the Wichita man’s name, but say he’s a known gang member with an extensive burglary record.

Police Capt. Troy Livingston says he was in custody for burglary when the sex crimes unit was alerted that he was a known burglar in the area. Livingston says forensic evidence linked him to the rape.

The woman, who lives alone, told police she was awakened the night of Sept. 29 by intruders.

Livingston described the victim as a strong and brave woman.

UNMC: Ebola Patient Shows Modest Improvement

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska hospital treating an American video journalist with Ebola says he’s shown modest improvement.

Dr. Phil Smith, director of the Nebraska Medical Center’s 10-bed isolation unit, said Friday that 33-year-old Ashoka Mukpo’s condition “is slightly improved.”

Mukpo, of Providence, Rhode Island, is the second Ebola patient treated at the Omaha hospital.

Mukpo is receiving an experimental Ebola drug called brincidofovir and IV fluids. That’s similar to the treatment the hospital’s first Ebola patient, Rick Sacra, received during his three weeks there.

Mukpo became infected while working as a freelance cameraman for Vice News, NBC News and other media outlets. He returned to Liberia in early September to help highlight the toll of the Ebola outbreak.
