FBI Investigates Missouri Officer’s Stun Gun Use

FBIINDEPENDENCE, Mo. (AP) — The FBI is investigating after a police officer in suburban Kansas City, Missouri, used a stun gun to subdue a 17-year-old during a traffic stop, leaving him hospitalized in critical condition.

Independence police say an officer used a stun gun on Bryce Masters of Independence Sunday afternoon during a car stop. Police say in a news release that Masters was uncooperative and physically resisted after he was stopped because the car he was driving had a warrant attached to it.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave.

Masters’ family issued a statement Monday seeking an investigation by the U.S. Justice Department. They said information from witnesses and video of the stop was inconsistent with police statements.

The FBI’s Kansas City office will investigate whether the officer used excessive force.

Platte County Officials Order Courthouse Air Test

oh-thats-nastyCOLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — Platte County officials want to know the source of a strange smell at the courthouse and whether it’s dangerous.

The Board of Supervisors has approved an air quality assessment by environmental firm Cardno ATC. The test will cost up to $2,000 and its date hasn’t been set.

County officials say visitors and employees to the treasurer’s and sheriff’s offices have complained of the unspecified odor and humidity over the past few months. Those offices are adjacent to each other in the courthouse.

Supervisor Tom Martens says the inside air quality will be compared to the outside and to various federal guidelines. He says the testing should determine if the air poses any health risks.

Bear Attack in Wyoming Kills Utah Man

ambulance-lightsCHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — A 31-year-old Utah man has died in a bear attack in the Bridger-Teton National Forest in northwest Wyoming.

Officials aren’t certain yet what type of bear killed Adam Thomas Stewart of Virgin, Utah. The coroner says he assumes it was a grizzly, but he doesn’t have enough information right now to make that determination.

Fremont County Undersheriff Ryan Lee says Stewart was in a remote area checking on a research plot earlier this month.

He failed to return and he was reported missing on Sept. 7, prompting a search. His body was found last Friday between his campsite and the research plot.

Lee says Stewart was alone.

Authorities declined to release what details led them to believe it was a bear attack.

The high court said Trice’s jury should have been allowed to consider whether the killing was intentional but provoked by a sudden quarrel and therefore constituted manslaughter.
