Workers were brought in to sweep off muddy waters. Lane restrictions are in place.

4 Students Hurt, At Least 1 Seriously in High School Lab Fire

fireDENVER (AP) — Authorities say four students suffered burns and at least one had serious injuries from a fire in a Denver high school chemistry laboratory.

The fire broke out Monday at SMART Academy, a charter high school in southwestern Denver. Denver Fire Department spokesman Mark Watson says the cause was under investigation, but the fire appears to have been accidental.

Watson says at least some of the students had burns to their faces and upper chests.

He says the fire appeared to have burned itself out and didn’t spread beyond the lab.

The blaze set off school alarms, prompting an evacuation. Watson says students have returned to classes.

A school spokesman says a teacher was in the lab at the time. Firefighters received the alarm shortly before 8 a.m.

Deaths in Storm Drains Raise Safety Issue

storm-drainCEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — The death of an Iowa teenager who was sucked into a storm drain during flash flooding this summer has focused attention on the dangers of the large flood-control pipes and culverts used all over the country.

People are caught in flood pipes a few times a year, typically after a heavy rainfall. They’re often carried toward creeks and lakes where the pipes empty.

That’s what happened to 17-year-old Logan Blake, who died after being swept into a culvert that didn’t have a grate while playing Frisbee with friends.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health warned cities 12 years ago that installing grates could prevent such accidents. Some cities fear the grates will clog with debris during heavy rains, but supporters say clogging can be managed with routine checks.
