LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A suspected gang member has been sentenced to prison for helping beat to death two Lincoln men last year.

Online court records say 20-year-old Ricky McLaughlin III was given 20 to 30 years for manslaughter, 40 to 50 years for use of a deadly weapon and four to five years for an unrelated sex assault.

He and Tyler Thornburg took plea deals to reduce their second-degree murder charges. The men admitted to the assaults of 20-year-old Nathan “Shane” Walton and 27-year-old David Mueller. Prosecutors say the assailants are gang members who used a baseball bat to beat random victims in June 2013 to make a name for their gang.

Thornburg is scheduled to be sentenced on Tuesday.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha police have arrested a suspect in this weekend’s shooting death of a 76-year-old man.

Police said Sunday that 41-year-old Ray Hubbard has been arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder in Saturday’s shooting.

Officer James Shade says there was an argument before shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. Saturday in northeast Omaha.

Paramedics took L.B. Liggins to the hospital where he died.

Hubbard will also likely face two weapons charges in the case.

SARONVILLE, Neb. (AP) — Authorities plan to file more charges after the third member of a Hastings family died several days after a semi collided with their SUV.

26-year-old Tiffany Isom died from injuries she sustained in Thursday’s crash in Clay County.

Isom’s parents, 53 year-old Gary Isom, and his wife, 52 year-old Susan Isom, were also killed. Their 16-year-old son was seriously injured but his condition wasn’t immediately available.

The family was driving east on U.S. Highway 6 when their sport utility vehicle was struck by semitrailer that had been going south on Nebraska Highway 14.

The semi’s driver, Kenneth Johnson of Eagle, was charged Friday with two counts of manslaughter. Griess says he plans to file a third manslaughter charge this week.

NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a man who robbed a bank in Nebraska City earlier this month matches the description of the “AK-47 Bandit” who has robbed banks across several western states.

No one was harmed in the Aug. 22 robbery of the First National Bank branch in southeast Nebraska. Authorities held a news conference Sunday because the suspect may be the same man who robbed banks in California, Idaho and Washington in 2012.

The suspect carries an assault rifle similar to an AK-47 into the banks.

During a robbery in Chino, California, in February 2012, the suspect shot and seriously wounded a police officer.

Law enforcement officials say the suspect is dangerous. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $20,000 for information leading to the suspect’s arrest.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A judge has sided with Lancaster County and its jail in a lawsuit by a woman who said her skin infection wasn’t properly treated while she was jailed on shoplifting charges.

30-year-old Meghan McIntosh sued, saying the jail and its medical provider — Nashville, Tennessee-based Correct Care Solutions — were negligent in treating her for MRSA, a staph infection resistant to antibiotics.

McIntosh was jailed from November 2011 to March 2012 on the charges, to which she eventually pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six months. While in jail, she said Correct Care failed to provide prompt and appropriate treatment and withheld medication that would have helped her.

The judge found that McIntosh didn’t produce enough evidence to prove her case.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Police in Lincoln are investigating an overnight shooting that left one man dead.

21-year-old Maurice Lamont Williams died after he was shot with a handgun just before 1 a.m. Saturday. Police say the shooting happened inside LionsGate Apartments, where Williams lived.

Capt. Bob Farber says police received reports of the shooting just after 1 a.m. When officers arrived at the apartment, they found Williams with a gunshot wound. He was taken to Bryan West Campus in Lincoln, where he died.

Police were still interviewing witnesses and trying to get more information on Saturday.

Farber asked anyone with information to contact police.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The 8-year-old boy who became an Internet sensation for his touchdown run in Nebraska’s 2013 spring football scrimmage is now one of a handful of children enrolled in a cancer treatment trial.

Jack Hoffman is the fourth child enrolled in the clinical trial at Boston Children’s Hospital. He is one of 14 children in the world who have taken the medication, which is an adult cancer drug now being tested in children.

Jack’s family announced earlier this month that the boy’s brain cancer had returned after he had been declared in remission for less than a year.

Jack’s touchdown won an ESPY Award for best sports moment of 2013, and video of it has been viewed more than 8 million times on YouTube.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — In response to complaints about lack of room, Omaha Public Schools has announced it will move all of its high school graduation ceremonies next year — out of state.

All of the OPS graduation ceremonies will be held in the Mid-America Center across the Missouri River in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

The 7,000-seat arena will allow the district to allot six tickets per graduate to the graduate’s family, with an option to buy more.

This year, the district held graduations in the Sapp Fieldhouse on the University of Nebraska at Omaha campus. The smaller venue limited families to four tickets.

OPS plans to move graduations in 2016 and beyond to a new arena being built on the UNO campus.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Department of Veterans Affairs is hosting a town hall event in Lincoln.

The event is scheduled for Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Lincoln VA Regional Office. Veterans, their relatives and the public are invited to attend to give feedback and make recommendations for VA programs.

The town hall is one of many the VA is holding around the country in an effort to improve services and rebuild trust among veterans. The Lincoln meeting is open to the public and the media.
