Colorado’s Anti-Pot ‘Lab Rat’ Campaign Hits Snag

Colorado-MarijuanaBOULDER, Colo. (AP) — A provocative anti-marijuana campaign aimed at Colorado youths has angered marijuana activists for its tag line, “Don’t Be a Lab Rat.”

Now a Colorado school system is declining to display a human-size cage used in the campaign.

The Daily Camera reports (https://bit.ly/1vIqG6T) that the Boulder Valley School District says it won’t participate. School officials say they don’t believe the “Lab Rat” cage is an effective display for 12- to 15-year-olds about pot’s potential harm.

The state health department says its campaign is getting people talking about pot. Recreational pot sales to those 21 and older in Colorado became legal this year.

The campaign is paid for by a pharmaceutical settlement fund that raises awareness for substance abuse.

Crested Butte Become Bud Lite’s ‘Whatever’ Town

bud-lightDENVER (AP) — Some people in normally laid back Crested Butte, Colorado, are not up for “Whatever” — a secretive Bud Lite plan to paint their mountain town blue and turn it into a fantasy town for an ad campaign.

The company has agreed to pay the town $250,000 to fence off its main street and bring in more than 1,000 revelers for the Sept. 5-7 event. Secrecy has been part of the “Are you up for Whatever?” campaign from its beginning at last year’s Super Bowl when Arnold Schwarzenegger appeared in a spot playing pingpong with Don Cheadle.

Supporters and opponents packed a town meeting Monday night. They included a man dressed in Mickey Mouse ears who said he objected to the town being turned into Disneyland.

lincoln-policeLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities have released the name of a 27-year-old man who died after falling from the top of a sport utility vehicle in Lincoln.

Blood tests were performed on the driver, 34-year-old Lindsey McCallister, and an autopsy was ordered for Rubio’s body.

Kindergartner Missing for Hours Before Parents Told

police-lights-redPHILADELPHIA (AP) — Trial witnesses say a Philadelphia girl abducted from her kindergarten was missing for six hours before her family learned she was gone.

A former day care worker is accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting the 5-year-old and hiding her at home for nearly a day.

Prosecutors told jurors in opening statements Monday that Christina Regusters of Philadelphia acted alone.

However, they say the girl believes a man is responsible, because that’s what she was told after being blindfolded.

The 21-year-old Regusters had worked at an after-school program the girl attended.

Prosecutors say she posed as the girl’s mother to sign her out that morning. Witnesses say no one realized the mistake until after school.

A defense lawyer says Regusters does not match the description of the school intruder.

Colorado Inmate Death Not Reported for Over a Year

co-dept-of-correctionsDENVER (AP) — Colorado prison officials waited nearly a year and a half to report the death of a mentally ill inmate to health officials, delaying an outside review into policies and procedures that may have led to the death.

State health officials launched an investigation this summer into Christopher Lopez’s death. He suffered two seizures and died on a cell floor at San Carlos Correctional Facility on March 17, 2013.

Prison cameras captured the incident, and guards could be heard laughing and discussing their views on Wal-Mart. Lopez’s family has filed a lawsuit saying the guards ignored his needs and that Lopez had bipolar schizoaffective disorder.

Corrections Department spokeswoman Adrienne Jacobson says it wasn’t reported because Lopez didn’t die in the clinic.

Health officials say it must be reported because inmates get care in cells or the clinic.

Headstones Mark Nebraska Graves of Civil War Vets

civil-war-flagsNORFOLK, Neb. (AP) — New headstones mark the final Nebraska resting places of two veterans of the Civil War.

About 50 people gathered Sunday on a quiet hill at Best Cemetery west of Norfolk. They heard a musket volley following a headstone dedication ceremony.

One headstone was for John Wollert, who enlisted in the Union Army in 1864. In 1875 he and his wife filed a claim for a homestead north of Battle Creek and went on to have three children.

The other new headstone marked the grave of Marsee Besst, who enlisted with the 8th Iowa Volunteer Cavalry in 1863. Family members say the 1910 U.S. Census showed him living in Hall County. Records also show that he served as a Norfolk police officer for a time.

POT-BUSTA traffic stop for following too close on Interstate 80 in Seward County led to the seizure of nearly 100 lbs. of marijuana and two arrests.

Omaha Nightspot Wins Court Bid to Remain Open

judgeshipOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A bar and restaurant in Omaha’s Old Market district has won the first round in its bid to survive.

A Douglas County District Court judge on Friday granted an injunction that lets Maria Sangria remain open. The Omaha City Council had invoked what’s called its “good neighbor ordinance” to punish the nightspot, which nearby businesses and the police say has become a neighborhood headache.

Last Tuesday the council revoked Maria Sangria’s certificate of occupancy and voted to cancel its liquor license. The injunction lets the restaurant remain open pending further hearings and any state action on the nightspot’s liquor license.
