UPS Says 51 Retail Stores Breached by Malware

upsssSome customers of The UPS Store may have had their credit and debit card information exposed by a computer virus found on systems at 51 stores.

A spokeswoman for UPS says the information includes card numbers, postal and email addresses from about 100,000 transactions between Jan. 20 and Aug. 11.

United Parcel Service Inc. said Wednesday that it was among U.S. retailers who got a government bulletin about the malware on July 31. The malware is not identified by current anti-virus software.

UPS spokeswoman Chelsea Lee says the company is not aware of any fraud related to the attack.

Atlanta-based UPS says it hired a security firm that found the virus in systems at stores in 24 states, about 1 percent of the company’s 4,470 franchised locations.

School Sorry for Making Special Ed Kids Sort Trash

highschoolJURUPA VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — Parents of special education students in a Southern California city say they were outraged to learn their children had been sorting trash as a school activity.

Jurupa Unified Superintendent Elliot Duchon apologized to humiliated students and suspended the activity.

The apology came at a heated school board meeting on Monday night. Parents sounded off over the program at Patriot High School that had special education students sort through campus trash bins for recyclables.

Duchon says the program aims to teach special education students general life skills like budgeting and purchasing groceries.

Parent Carmen Wells complained after learning her autistic son was digging through trash on his first day as a high school freshman.

Flood Insurance Workshops Offered in Pilger

pilger-tornado-3PILGER, Neb. (AP) — Flood insurance workshops will be held this week for residents of the small northeast Nebraska city of Pilger who want to rebuild after a June tornado destroyed much of the town.

Flooding rules have complicated rebuilding plans for many Pilger residents because new homes built in the town can’t have basements.

Pilger has been in a flood plain since 2004, so every resident who wanted to rebuild there will have to make sure the lowest level of their home is at least one foot above the likely flood level, which is sometimes referred to as a 100-year flood.

One workshop will be held Wednesday evening at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Pilger. The workshop will be repeated at the church Saturday morning at 10.

US Safety Agency Offers Online Recall Check

NHTSADETROIT (AP) — The U.S. government is offering a free online service for drivers to find out if their vehicles have been recalled but not repaired.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the service started Wednesday on its website, www.safercar.gov.

Drivers can key in their vehicle identification number to get the results. The number can be found on the dashboard near the windshield or on the driver’s door post near the latch.

Also starting Wednesday, automakers must keep the same data on their own websites, and they have to update it at least once per week.

The safety agency’s site will show data if there’s an open recall, or it will tell drivers there are none.

The agency also says used-car buyers can check for unrepaired vehicles before they make a purchase.

Columbus Still Trying to Save Old Train Depot

Union-PacificCOLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — The city is still looking for private parties willing to spend $750,000 or more to move and save Columbus’ old Union Pacific depot.

City officials discussed at Monday night’s council meeting the railroad’s plan to tear down the depot after its employees move into a new building.

City administrator Joe Mangiamelli says the city has leased land the depot could be moved to, if someone or a group were to come forward with the money.

Mayor Mike Moser says he wouldn’t favor spending city funds on the project, a stance echoed by Councilman Rich Jablonski, who said, “We can’t save everything.”

The building dates back to 1887.
