Hall County Board Faces Decision on Excess Revenue

CASH_MONEYGRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — Hall County officials have what other county officials might say is a happy problem: what to do with excess revenue.

Spend the $695,000 on maintenance and other needs? Cut the tax levy?

The questions arose this year because the county has an estimated $432 million in new property valuation on the books.

Supervisor Gary Quandt said at the board meeting Wednesday that if the county can cut the levy a little, “I’d like to head in that direction.”

The supervisors decided to wait until their Aug. 25 budget meeting to determine whether to cut the levy.

17-Year-Old Charged with Murder in Hotel Bathroom

Jail-Bars-and-Cuffs_mediumHOUSTON (AP) — A teenager has been charged with murder in the slaying of a 35-year-old man whose beaten and stabbed body was found in a Houston motel bathtub.

Harris County jail records show 17-year-old Carlos F. Mercado was charged Wednesday in the death of Carlos Villatoro, and is being held without bond.

Jail records don’t list an attorney for Mercado.

He was arrested before dawn Tuesday for a traffic violation as he drove the victim’s car. Investigators say Mercado’s clothes were bloody and that he admitted to the killing.

A cleaner discovered Villatoro’s body in the Tropical Motel.

Houston police say Mercado and the victim checked into a room together and an argument ensued.

Authorities haven’t released a possible motive in the death.

Seventy-seven-year-old Bayapa Lingala was charged Wednesday with second degree murder and use of a weapon to commit a felony. Lincoln Police say they arrived at an area residence Tuesday night and found 46-year-old Sujay Nooka with a 1.5-inch stab wound to his upper chest. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities say they found Lingala in the basement with an 8-inch knife covered in blood.

A police spokeswoman says investigators are trying to determine what prompted the stabbing.

It’s unclear whether Lingala has an attorney. The case isn’t listed yet in online court records.

Payouts to Ex-Nuclear Plant Employees Revealed

fort-calhoun-dryOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha-based public power utility paid out nearly $1 million in severance and vacation benefits to seven employees who resigned from its Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant in eastern Nebraska — well over the $400,000 the utility initially reported.

The payouts came when Omaha Public Power District hired Chicago-based Exelon, the largest U.S. operator of nuclear power plants, in 2012 to run the troubled Fort Calhoun plant.

A Douglas County judge this week ordered OPPD to release the payout documents after a labor union sued to see them.

The documents show that former OPPD Chief Nuclear Officer David Bannister was paid nearly $256,000 in severance and more than $100,000 for unused vacation.

Several other employees who agreed to resign were paid nearly $600,000 in severance and unused vacation.

Mother Charged with Abandoning Newborn in Trash

police-lights-redINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Authorities say an Indianapolis woman admitted giving birth in a warehouse restroom then dumping the newborn boy in a garbage can, expecting him to die.

A judge entered a preliminary not guilty plea Wednesday for 22-year-old Briana Holland on charges including attempted murder and child neglect.

Police arrested Holland after her co-workers at the Indianapolis warehouse found the newborn Friday night. Court documents say the baby’s head was covered in a bag, part of a tampon applicator was inside his mouth and toilet paper was wrapped around his neck.

A police affidavit says Holland said she was scared and couldn’t afford to care for her son. The baby is in the custody of child welfare officials.

Defense attorney Chadwick Hill didn’t return a message from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Jack Hoffman Has Cancer Recurrence

Jack-Hoffman-Nebraska-Football-ESPYLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The 8-year-old who received national attention for his touchdown run in the 2013 Nebraska spring football game has had a recurrence of brain cancer.

Jack Hoffman, from Atkinson, had been in remission since October. His father, Andy, said doctors found a “spot of concern” in Jack’s brain in April, and follow-up tests in Boston on Wednesday showed the tumor had grown.

Andy Hoffman wrote on Jack’s CaringBridge page that the tumor would be treated with chemotherapy.

Jack’s touchdown won an ESPY Award for best sports moment of 2013. Players mobbed him and lifted him on their shoulders in triumph after his 69-yard run. The video of the play has been replayed on national TV and viewed more than 8 million times on YouTube.

Syracuse Chief: No. 1 Party School Label Not OK

syracuseSYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — The chancellor of Syracuse University says his college’s ranking as the nation’s top party school is a “wake-up call” for change.

Kent Syverud’s (SIHV’-uh-roodz) message was posted on the university’s website Tuesday and emailed to students, staff and alumni.

He says being designated The Princeton Review’s No. 1 party school isn’t a good thing for a school to be labeled. He says Syracuse alumni, students and faculty like to have a good time, but they didn’t pour their lives into building the university “primarily to create a party.”

The chancellor says Monday’s release of The Princeton Review’s rankings serves as a wake-up call for working on two things: Enhancing awareness of Syracuse’s academic excellence and paying more attention to activities — parties included — that “get in the way of students succeeding.”
