OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Omaha mayor and police chief say the city needs more law enforcement officers.

Mayor Jean Stothert plans to present a budget on Tuesday to the city council that includes money for new recruits. It’s unclear how much funding the mayor wants for new positions, but she says she wants to hire about 75 more officers by 2016.

The department currently has about 770 officers.

Stothert and Chief Todd Schmaderer say bolstering the ranks will reduce crime, improve response times and help staff special events. They say more police will help reduce gang violence.

Florida Town Stunned by News of Police KKK Ties

florida-department-of-law-eFRUITLAND PARK, Fla. (AP) — Residents of a small, central Florida town say they’re shocked and disgusted by the recent disclosure that two members of its police force are accused of being members of the Ku Klux Klan.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement last week released a report saying Fruitland Park Deputy Chief David Borst and Officer George Hunnewell were Klan members. Borst denies being a member.

Borst resigned and Hunnewell was fired last week. A third Fruitland Park officer resigned in 2010 after his Klan ties became public.

A researcher with the Southern Poverty Law Center says it’s extremely rare nowadays to find police officers who are Klan members.

Cases the officers worked on also are under scrutiny. On Friday, prosecutors dismissed three cases — two traffic offenses and a misdemeanor battery.

james-garnerLOS ANGELES (AP) — Actor James Garner, wisecracking star of TV’s “Maverick” who went on to a long career on both small and big screen, has died. He was 86.

He was found dead of natural causes at his Brentwood home Saturday evening, Los Angeles police officer Alonzo Iniquez said early Sunday.

Although he was adept at drama and action, Garner was best known for his witty, low-key style, especially with the TV series “Maverick” and “The Rockford Files.”

He was nominated for an Oscar for the 1985 “Murphy’s Romance.” He remained active well into his 70s.

Police: Woman Posted Selfies in Stolen Dress

odd-newsWEST FRANKFORT, Ill. (AP) — Police investigating the theft of clothing and jewelry from a southern Illinois boutique say they arrested a woman after she posted Facebook photos of herself wearing one of the stolen items.

Police arrested 27-year-old Danielle Saxton, of West Frankfort, earlier this month on misdemeanor retail theft charges. She’s free on her own recognizance.

Authorities say a distinctive leopard-print dress was among the items stolen July 11 from Mortie’s Boutique in West Frankfort.

The store’s co-owner, Kert Williams, says he posted about the stolen items on Facebook and that people who saw Williams’ posting and those of Saxton made the connection and helped police.

Online court records don’t show whether Saxton has an attorney. She does not have a listed home telephone number.

Mayor Chris Beutler

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — An accounting error that mistakenly sent nearly $300,000 to the city’s bus system budget could now benefit burgeoning southeast Lincoln.

Mayor Chris Beutler (BITE-ler) wants the extra $275,000 in general fund money used to help build a new combined fire and police station for southeast Lincoln. Beutler says that would provide better fire and ambulance service and help reduce driving time for police officers.

Currently, police officers who cover southeast Lincoln begin their shift downtown, then drive up to 25 minutes to their beat. Officials say having a station in southeast Lincoln would save the city in fuel costs and increase productivity.
