TECUMSEH, Neb. (AP) — Federal labor officials have cited a Nebraska cooperative on several safety violations following the March death of an employee exposed to anhydrous ammonia.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health said in a news release Wednesday that Midwest Farmers Cooperative violated standards on handling and storing anhydrous ammonia, among other things.

The agency has proposed penalties of more than $62,000. The company has contested the citations and requested a hearing on the matter.

The 63-year-old truck driver was exposed to anhydrous ammonia when a 250-gallon tank ruptured at Midwest Farmers Cooperative in Tecumseh. Three others were injured.

Anhydrous ammonia is used by farmers as fertilizer. The colorless gas can burn the eyes, throat and damage lung tissue at high exposures.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Police say an Omaha man and woman faked her kidnapping so they could get money from her boyfriend.

The two were booked into jail on suspicion of attempted theft by extortion. They have yet to be charged in court.

Police say the 19-year-old woman text-messaged her 21-year-old boyfriend on Monday night, telling him she’d been abducted. Then the boyfriend began getting messages demanding money for his girlfriend’s return.

The boyfriend reported the messages to police. Officers went to the home the woman was sharing with the other man and found them there. Officers soon learned the woman was not in danger.

YORK, Neb. (AP) — An August sentencing has been scheduled for a 38-year-old York man convicted in the crash death of a teacher from Aurora.

Otis Newcomb pleaded no contest to felony manslaughter on Tuesday in York County District Court. Prosecutors had lowered the charge from vehicular homicide and dropped another charge in exchange for Newcomb’s plea.

Authorities say the van Newcomb was driving on Nov. 2 crossed the center line on U.S. Highway 34 about two miles west of York, striking a pickup. Thirty-one-year-old Lauren Akerson was a passenger in truck, and she was fatally injured.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has received a $4 million gift to help bring top Broadway shows to Nebraska.

The estate gift will create the Glenn Korff Broadway Series at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. The new endowment at the University of Nebraska Foundation seeks to enhance the center’s Broadway programming, visiting artists program, commissioned theater projects and more.

The gift comes after Glenn Korff, a Nebraska native and UNL alumnus, announced an $8 million gift to the university for the Glenn Korff School of Music at the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. The gift created a permanently endowed fund at the University of Nebraska Foundation to provide annual support for students, faculty and programs.

Korff, a native of Hebron who lived in Boulder, Colo., died in August.

BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) — A Gage County grand jury has found no criminal conduct caused or contributed to the death of a jail inmate in February.

The grand jury convened Tuesday to investigate the death of 26-year-old Adam Wolken. It issued its decision on Tuesday afternoon.

Wolken was found unresponsive in his Gage County Jail cell just before 4 a.m. on Feb. 15 and could not be revived. He’d been arrested on Feb. 13 following a standoff with police at a Beatrice motel. Police say Wolken held two women and a 20-month old child hostage before surrendering. He’d been armed with a semi-automatic rifle and a handgun.

State law requires a grand jury investigation whenever a person dies in custody or in the process of being detained.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The mother of a man convicted of killing four people in Omaha last summer has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

U.S. District Judge Laurie Smith Camp ordered on Tuesday that 47-year-old Lori Jenkins serve two 10-year sentences at the same time.

Jenkins was found guilty in April on two counts of being a felon in possession of ammunition. She was accused of illegally buying ammunition that her son, Nikko Jenkins, used in the killings of four people last summer.

Lori Jenkins is awaiting trial in Douglas County District Court on three counts of being an accessory to the shootings. Court records do not list an attorney.

WAVERLY, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a Nebraska man was walking around naked on Interstate 80 before damaging a passing vehicle.

The Nebraska State Patrol says 30-year-old Samson Wilcinot of Lincoln was arrested Monday on Interstate 80 near Waverly.

Troopers say they received a report Monday of a man walking on and off the interstate’s eastbound lanes. Wilcinot is accused of physically hitting a vehicle that slowed down to help him.

The driver of that vehicle pulled off the interstate into a weigh station area. The vehicle sustained more than $1,500 in damage.

Wilcinot was cited on suspicion of felony criminal mischief and ticketed for public indecency and being a pedestrian on the interstate. Court records do not list an attorney.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Missouri man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for taking a developmentally delayed girl from Massachusetts to a motel in Rhode Island, where he sold her for sex.

Stephen Ardrey, of Springfield, Missouri, was sentenced in federal court in Rhode Island on Tuesday and apologized to the 17-year-old girl and her family. He previously pleaded guilty to trafficking a minor and transporting a minor to engage in sex.

The teen’s mother says her daughter suffers from nightmares and couldn’t attend the sentencing because of anxiety.

Prosecutors say Ardrey met the girl online and corresponded with her before taking her in September from a library in Medfield, Massachusetts, to a motel in West Greenwich, Rhode Island. They say he engaged in sexual activity with her then sold her.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Kansas City, Kansas, officials say a contractor for BNSF Railway died after falling into a train car full of grain.

Fire department officials say 48-year-old James Breedlove died in the accident Monday at railroad yards in Kansas City, Kansas. Authorities did not release his hometown.

Fire department deputy chief Craig Duke says Breedlove fell into the train car while grain was being transferred from the car to a semitrailer.

When firefighters arrived, rail crews were trying to remove the grain from the train car. They found Breedlove’s body near the bottom of the car.

No other injuries were reported.
