Teacher Accused in Student Relationship Kills Self

police-lights-red(AP) — The Texas high school made famous in the book “Friday Night Lights” says a longtime teacher who was among five former staffers accused of having improper relationships with students committed suicide a day after the allegations surfaced.

Mark Lampman taught government and coached girls’ golf at Permian High School in Odessa for 17 years. School officials didn’t detail his alleged relationship with a female student, but called it improper.

School district spokesman Mike Adkins says the school learned of the accusation Tuesday and that Lampman resigned after being questioned.

The Ector County sheriff says the 47-year-old died Wednesday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A woman who answered the phone at Lampman’s home declined comment.

Two accused former staffers are awaiting trial, and police are investigating allegations against two others.

(AP) — A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of whoever shot an arrow into a cat in Omaha.

A man called animal control officers for help on Wednesday afternoon, saying he’d found the wounded cat in the yard of his east-central Omaha home.

The officers took the cat, which later underwent an operation to remove the arrow. The cat is recovering at the Nebraska Humane Society.

The society says it doesn’t know who owns the cat, which is described as a dark-colored, domestic long-haired neutered male that’s about a year old.

(AP) — A resentencing hearing has been delayed for a Nebraska inmate who killed his 12-year-old sister when he was 14.

The hearing had been set June 9 for Sydney Thieszen. He was convicted of murder in 1988 for the slaying at their home near Henderson on Sept. 17, 1987. Prosecutors said Thieszen killed his sister because he was afraid she would tell police he was running away from home.

In March a judge ruled that Thieszen was entitled to resentencing in accordance with a 2012 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that mandatory life-without-parole sentences for juvenile killers are unconstitutional.

The hearing has been moved to Sept. 10 at the request of the defense attorney, who said he needed more time to prepare.

(AP) — Authorities say a 34-year-old Council Bluffs woman sought in Nebraska has been arrested after trying to write a bad check at a store.

Amy Jo Hockabout was arrested Tuesday night at a Menards store. Police say Menards security called to report that Hockabout was trying to buy $170 worth of merchandise. Council Bluffs police Sgt. David Dawson says Hockabout had 30 counterfeit checks and nine fake driver’s licenses with her.

Hockabout faces Iowa charges for forgery and falsifying public documents. Online court records don’t list the name of her attorney.

Nebraska court records say Hockabout is wanted in Omaha because she didn’t show up for sentencing in a forgery case.

Hastings Murals Serve as Art Class Final

hastings-College(AP) — Two murals being painted on the rear outside wall of a coffeehouse in Hastings are serving as the final for a Hastings College art class.

The six artists are members of Steve Snell’s advanced painting class. He said Tuesday that the murals will take about a week to finish and will replace a test as the class final.

The paintings are the first college murals in downtown. Snell says he hopes there will be more from students in his future classes.

(AP) — A 5-year-old German shepherd named Lexy has a special job at the Robinson Health Clinic at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

As the Army struggles to address the broad swath of stress disorders and mental health problems brought on by more than a decade of war, Lexy helps soldiers to put aside the bravado and seek treatment.

For psychiatrist Maj. Christine Rumayor, Lexy is a partner, a conversation starter and a living, breathing medical tool who can calm a patient and make a therapy appointment a little more enjoyable.

Dogs like Lexy are being used almost as co-therapists in a few Army installations, including Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Others work as service animals and are used for animal-assisted therapy, visiting patients in hospitals.

Florida Mom Accused of Killing Kids Said They Were ‘Mean’

police-lights-red(AP) — A Tampa mother accused of killing her two teenagers told a detective hours after the bodies were found that they had been mean and she hoped they were dead.

Prosecutors on Wednesday played a recorded interview between Julie Schenecker and Tampa Police Det. Gary Sandel, conducted in January 2011.

Prosecutors Schenecker killed her 16-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son. She has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to two counts of first-degree murder.

Schenecker told Sandel that she shot the teens and that she had wanted to commit suicide. During the interview, her voice was slow and slurred.

Schenecker’s attorneys say she has suffered from bipolar disorder and depression for decades.

Prosecutors say the slayings were premeditated.
