SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The FBI says a defendant has died after being shot by a U.S. marshal during an attack on a witness during a trial in federal court in Salt Lake City.

The FBI said 25-year-old Siale Angilau died Monday at a hospital. The agency says Angilau was shot in the chest as he rushed the witness with a pen in an aggressive, threatening manner.

Authorities said Angilau, who had not been restrained in the courtroom, was shot several times in front of a jury that had been selected on Friday.

Angilau was one of 17 people named in a 29-count racketeering indictment filed in 2010 accusing gang members of assault, conspiracy, robbery and weapons offenses.

16-Year-Old Survives in Wheel Well of Maui Flight

FBI(AP) — FBI officials say a 16-year-old boy stowed away in the wheel well of a flight from California to Hawaii, surviving the trip halfway across the Pacific Ocean unharmed despite frigid temperatures at 38,000 feet and a lack of oxygen.

FBI spokesman Tom Simon in Honolulu told The Associated Press on Sunday night that the boy was questioned by the FBI after being discovered on the tarmac at the Maui airport with no identification.

Simon says security footage from the San Jose airport verified that the boy from Santa Clara, Calif., hopped a fence to get to Hawaiian Airlines Flight 45 on Sunday morning. Simon says the child had run away from his family.

Simon says the boy was released to child protective services and not charged with a crime.

Study: Kids Get Codeine in ER Despite Risks, Guidelines

Medical-Chart(AP) — There’s new evidence that the potent painkiller codeine is being given to hundreds of thousands of children in emergency rooms despite guidelines on limiting its use.

That is the conclusion of a study based on an analysis of 10 years of national data.

Codeine prescriptions were given in about 3 percent of kids’ ER visits in 2010. But that amounts to more than half a million visits.

The Food and Drug Administration issued its strictest warning last year about a rare risk for life-threatening complications or death in children given the drug after certain surgeries. It advises using codeine for children’s pain only if anticipated benefits outweigh the risks.

The study was published online Monday in Pediatrics.

Peschong says a larger, county training campus could include three or four classrooms, half a dozen offices and a course where crews could practice emergency driving.

Eastern Nebraska Brush Fire Forces Evacuations

fire(AP) — A large brush fire in eastern Nebraska forced the evacuation of a farm and educational complex that houses dozens of animals.

Fire crews from Omaha and Bellevue spent hours on Saturday fighting the blaze, which had flames that reached 20 to 25 feet high. Crews brought the fire under control, but were still working Sunday morning to tamp down smoldering hot spots.

The fire Fontenelle Forest in Bellevue was between a Missouri River levee and nearby railroad tracks. It forced the evacuation of the Gifford Farm, an educational complex that houses dozens of animals. Bellevue firefighters were expected to meet with farm employees Sunday to determine when the workers and animals can return.
