Cause of Fire Near Lincoln’s Salt Creek Unclear

Lincoln Fire Dpt(AP) — Investigators are still trying to find the cause of a large brush fire near Salt Creek in Lincoln.

The fire on Saturday scorched a large area between the Salt Creek Levy Trial, a line of train tracks to the west, and West A and South streets. Fire investigator Don Gross said authorities have ruled out a passing train.

Firefighters say the blaze could have caused millions of dollars in structural damage, but crews were aided by off-duty firefighters and volunteers. Fire damage to foam board, shingles, trucks and a trailer at White Castle Roofing was expected to reach $200,000.

Gross says the fire appears to have started on a ridge, about 50 to 75 meters east of the train tracks.

Westboro Baptist Church spokesman Steve Drain said Sunday that Phelps is being cared for in a Shawnee County facility. Drain wouldn’t identify the facility but says Phelps is 84 and “having some health problems.”

Members of the Westboro church, based in Topeka, frequently protest at funerals of soldiers with signs containing messages like “Thank God for dead soldiers” and “Thank God for 9/11,” claiming the deaths are God’s punishment for American immorality and tolerance of homosexuality and abortion.

Crews Battle Grass Fires in Eastern Nebraska

fire-graphic(AP) — Fire crews spent part of their weekend battling wind-swept grass fires in eastern Nebraska.

Firefighters responded to several blazes on Saturday in Cass and Sarpy counties. One fire was caused when a Cass County landowner burned brush on his property.

Plattsmouth Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Bill Dudek says the fire spread quickly through the tall grass, and accessing it was a challenge. Dudek says the crews at one point had three fires burning simultaneously.

Sarpy County crews also battled a brush fire near Bellevue earlier Saturday. Crews say the fierce wind on Saturday made it difficult to contain.
