Madison Man Accused of Threats at Neb. Community College

northeast-community-college(AP) — A 23-year-old Madison man has been accused of threatening three students at Northeast Community College in Norfolk.

The Madison County sheriff’s office says John Ertzner was arrested last week. Madison County Jail records said Ertzner remained in custody on Monday. Court records don’t list the name of his attorney.

Officials say an armed man approached three students at the school on Monday. A court affidavit says the students reported that the man followed them on a campus road and stopped next to them when they stopped and pointed a gun at two of them.

Ertzner told an investigator he mistook the three for other men who’d chased him earlier Monday in Norfolk. He said he’d put his BB pistol on his car console but didn’t point it at the students.

Firefighters Battle Brush Fires in Eastern Neb.

fire-graphic(AP) — Firefighters are working to extinguish several brush fires in eastern Nebraska.

Fires broke out as temperatures climbed into the low 70s Sunday, but winds gusting 30-to-40 mph made it difficult to contain the fires.

No evacuations or serious injuries were reported Sunday afternoon, but at least one firefighter had to be treated for smoke inhalation near Branched Oak Lake.

Some roads had to be shut down at Branched Oak as crews battled a grass fire northeast of the lake.

Otoe County officials say firefighters were battling fires near Dunbar and Palmyra.

The Saunders County Sheriff’s office says a grass fire northwest of Ashland was contained Sunday.

Another brush fire was reported near Springfield, Neb. Sunday afternoon. That blaze forced a road closure nearby, but no injuries were reported.

Police in the Omaha suburb of Bellevue say 16-year-old Michaela Wells was flown back to the area on Friday — a day after she was found safe in Indianapolis at the home of a teen boy.

Bellevue Police Chief Mark Elbert says Wells will be held in the Sarpy County Juvenile Justice Center until investigators can talk with her and evaluate the situation.

Elbert says this interview procedure is used in any case of missing or runaway teens his department investigates.

Wells disappeared March 2 when she went outside to take out the trash.

Roosters Seized from Grand Island Home

rooster(AP) — A central Nebraska shelter is caring for some feathered friends after officers seized several roosters from a Grand Island mobile home.

Police were called to the home for a report of kids trying to fight roosters.

When an officer and an animal control worker arrived Wednesday afternoon, they found eight roosters, two of which were dead.

While city law allows some residents to have chickens, roosters aren’t allowed in city limits.

An officer told a man who claimed the birds that he isn’t allowed to have roosters on his property. The roosters were impounded, and Human Society officials are waiting to see if they will be surrendered, returned to the owner or if there will be a court hearing on the matter.
