Neb. Bill Could Benefit Low-Income Parents

ne-legislature-13(AP) — Some low-income parents would have a greater incentive to seek raises and promotions at work and to save for a child’s college education, under a bill in the Nebraska Legislature.

The measure that advanced Wednesday would allow parents to disregard portions of their income when re-applying for a state child care subsidy. The amount of income disregarded would gradually increase, but the eligibility requirements would return to normal after three years.

Sen. Tanya Cook of Omaha says some parents have turned down raises because they would immediately disqualify them from the subsidy.

The bill could also make it easier for low-income families to participate in Nebraska’s state-sponsored college savings plan, if they qualify for public benefits.

3rd Graders at California School Caught with Pot

odd-news(AP) — Police in a Central California city are trying to determine how three third-graders caught smoking marijuana got the drug.

Sonora Police Chief Mark Stinson says the two 8-year-olds and a 9-year-old were discovered by another student last week at Sonora Elementary School. Superintendent Leigh Shampain told KPIX-TV the students were smoking in a school bathroom.

The student who found the smokers told school officials, who contacted police. The third-graders were released to their parents.

Stinson said on Wednesday police were looking into whether someone supplied the drug to the kids.

KPIX-TV said Shampain would not discuss how the third-graders might be disciplined.

Lincoln Police Search for Robbery Suspects

lincoln-police(AP) — Lincoln police are searching for two men they say used machetes and other weapons to rob a computer store.

Employees at Computer Hardware on the city’s east side say the men entered the business Wednesday morning and left with iPads, laptops and cash. They reportedly had two machetes, an extendable baton and a stun gun.

Capt. David Beggs said the men wore masks and tied up the three employees inside. None of them were hurt.

The suspects fled on foot and remain on the loose as of Wednesday afternoon. Lincoln Public Schools spokeswoman Mary Kay Roth says nearby schools have secured their perimeters and locked front doors as a precaution.

Police and the Nebraska State Patrol are searching the area by foot and air.

Services Relocation Bill Clears Neb. Committee

NE-Veterans-Home(AP) — A bill inspired by the decision to relocate a Nebraska state veterans home has advanced out of a legislative committee, but the new measure would only apply to future projects.

The Government, Military and Veterans Affairs Committee voted 5-3 on Tuesday to send the bill to the full Legislature. It would require a legislative review of any proposal to move a state service or agency from one community to another, if the cost was $15 million or more.

The original measure by Sen. Mike Gloor, of Grand Island, could have been applied to the decision to move the Central Nebraska Veterans Home from Grand Island to Kearney.

That language was removed, and Gloor has promised in writing that he won’t try to change it back.

Studies Show Big Promise for HIV Prevention Drug

cdcA shot every one to three months may someday give an alternative to the daily pills that some people take now to cut their risk of getting HIV from sex with an infected partner.

Scientists say a long-acting, experimental drug completely protected monkeys from infection in two studies reported at an AIDS conference in Boston on Tuesday.

If testing in people shows the same, the shots could become a new tool to curb the spread of HIV. There’s already a daily pill that can be taken by those who don’t have the virus but are at risk of getting it from an infected partner.

The studies were done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and researchers at Rockefeller University in New York.

(AP) — A psychiatrist says in his lawsuit against the Douglas County Corrections Department that he was fired after testifying that the suspect in four Omaha slayings was “crazy.”

Dr. Eugene Oliveto says in the federal lawsuit he filed Monday in Omaha that the department retaliated against him for his courtroom candor. He’s seeking $1 million and a preliminary injunction to protect him from any future retaliation.

Douglas County Corrections director Mark Foxall has declined to comment on the lawsuit.

Oliveto also said in court on Feb. 12 that Nikko Jenkins was “totally insane” and a danger to society. Jenkins is charged with killing four Omaha residents within weeks of his release from prison on July 30. He’s pleaded not guilty.

A judge has ruled that Jenkins is competent to stand trial.
