Slaying Suspects to Be Tried in Adams County

(AP) — A mother and her son charged with killing a 68-year-old southern Nebraska woman will be tried in Adams County.

A Webster County judge on Tuesday ordered the change of venue for 41-year-old Shelley Casterline and 23-year-old Andrew Casterline. They’ve pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges in the slaying of Virginia Barone. Authorities say the Casterlines stabbed Barone to death in her Guide Rock home on Oct. 4.

Court filings say Shelley Casterline wanted her trial moved because the Webster County Courthouse doesn’t have adequate facilities to accommodate jurors, witnesses and lawyers for a trial on first-degree murder.

Saunders Co. Man Gets 20-60 Months for Thefts

jail(AP) — A 48-year-old man has been sentenced to prison for thefts from several rural properties in Saunders County.

A news release from the office of Saunders County Attorney Scott Tingelhoff says Jeffrey Ruckman was given 20 months to 60 months in prison, to be served at the same time. Online court records say Ruckman was sentenced on Tuesday.

The records say Ruckman pleaded guilty to three theft counts after prosecutors lowered them and dropped two others.

Prosecutors say that between July and December 2012, deputies received several reports of thefts of farm equipment, tire rims, batteries and miscellaneous metal.

Keystone Pipeline Faces New Obstacle in Nebraska

keystone(AP) — Just as pressure was building on President Barack Obama to make a decision on the Keystone XL pipeline, the project ran into another obstacle.

Once again, it came from Nebraska.

A judge on Wednesday overturned the Nebraska law that had allowed the pipeline to proceed through the state.

The ruling guaranteed the legal fight will continue for at least several more months. It also could leave Nebraska’s decision in the hands of an obscure state commission that regulates natural gas lines, grain warehouses and RVs.

The pipeline would carry oil from Canada to Texas refineries.

The ruling was a victory for opponents, including Nebraska landowners who filed a lawsuit challenging the law.

The state plans to appeal the ruling.

Development Bids Open for Omaha Civic Auditorium

omaha-civic-auditorium(AP) — The city of Omaha has officially put a landmark facility on the market.

The city posted a request Wednesday for development proposals on the Omaha Civic Auditorium. The nine-acre site is valued at about $10 million after demolition of the 60-year-old facility.

City officials say the facility hasn’t kept pace with booking events at nearby venues. It’s scheduled to close this summer.

The city says in its request that the site could be part of the downtown area’s redevelopment.

Project proposals are due in June. The city plans to announce a developer in late August.

Neb. Nuke Plant to Be Discussed at Public Meeting

fort-calhoun-dry(AP) — Regulators will hold the first public meeting on the Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant since it restarted late last year.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission plans to hold the meeting in Blair on Feb. 27.

Fort Calhoun, which sits across from Iowa on the Missouri River about 20 miles north of Omaha, has been offline from April 2011 until last December.

Fort Calhoun initially shut down for routine maintenance, but significant flooding in 2011, a small fire and a series of safety violations forced it to remain closed for more than two years.

The meeting will be held from 6-9 p.m. next Thursday at the Midland University campus in Blair.

EPA Cites 3 Neb. Parties in Lead Dust Enforcement

epa(AP) — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says it will require dozens of home renovation contractors and training providers to take additional steps to minimize harmful lead dust.

The EPA says settlements were reached with 17 contractors that didn’t obtain required certification. Twenty-one settlements involve violations for failing to follow lead-safe work practices. Three cases involve general contractors that didn’t ensure that subcontractors followed safety lead dust safety standards.

The enforcement actions led to more than $274,000 in civil penalties.

The EPA says that between May 2013 and January 2014, it settled enforcement actions with three Nebraska parties. They are James and Dona Jungers, of Lincoln; Painting Done Right, also of Lincoln; and Dennis Barker, of Fairbury.

Facebook Buying Mobile Messaging App WhatsApp for $19 Billion

whatsapp(AP) — Facebook is buying mobile messaging service WhatsApp for up to $19 billion in cash and stock, by far the company’s largest acquisition.

The world’s biggest social networking company said Thursday that it is paying $12 billion in Facebook stock and $4 billion in cash for WhatsApp. In addition, the app’s founders and employees will be granted $3 billion in restricted stock that will vest over four years after the deal closes.

Facebook says it is keeping WhatsApp as a separate service, just as it did with Instagram, which it bought for about $715.3 million.

WhatsApp has more than 450 million monthly active users. In comparison, Twitter had 241 million users at the end of 2014.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says WhatsApp is on path to reach a billion users.

Federal Investigators on Site of Neb. Plant Worker’s Death

OSHA(AP) — Federal investigators are at a Columbus medical supplies manufacturing plant to look into the death of a worker.

Platte County Attorney Carl Hart Jr. said Wednesday that 53-year-old Denise J. Wieser, of Richland, died Tuesday morning at the BD Medical plant. He declined to detail what she was doing when she died, only that her injuries came during the course of her work duties.

Hart said he is awaiting the results of an autopsy performed Wednesday to determine what caused Wieser’s death.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration spokesman Scott Allen says that a preliminary report indicates that Wieser’s death involved a forklift.

OSHA records show the plant was cited in 2005 for three workplace safety violations involving machinery, power tools and wiring, for which it paid a nearly $4,000 fine.

Police Confirm Finding of Missing Mo. Girl’s Body

hailey-owens(AP) — Police say the body of a missing 10-year-old girl has been found in southwest Missouri.

Police Chief Springfield Police Chief Paul Williams says search crews found a body they believe is Hailey Owens inside a suspect’s Springfield home on Wednesday.

Witnesses told police that Hailey was taken by a man in a pickup truck Tuesday evening.

Forty-five-year-old grade school coach Craig Michael Wood is jailed on suspicion of first-degree murder in Hailey’s disappearance. Wood was arrested late Tuesday inside a vehicle parked outside his house. Formal charges have not been filed.

The Springfield School District says Wood is a coach and teacher’s aide at a school for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Hailey did not attend that school, and Williams says the two apparently didn’t know each other.
